I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 with a 20" barrel. I've got a Hawke Sidewinder 30 tactical 8.5-25 x 42 scope on it.

I'd like to take the rifle out to 1200 yards, but I think I need some 20 or so MOA bases to extend the scope adjustment. My scope gives me about 55 moa (~219 clicks).

I think I figured out that with regular bases, I can go out to about 850 yards. And 20 moa bases will take me out to 1175. Is that an advisable move? Would 25 or 30 moa bases be more appropriate?

What is a good brand for moa bases?

Thanks!

To determine this utilize a ballistics calculator like http://www.jbmballistics.com or http://dop3.com enter the cartridge info and it will provide the drop so you can determine the amount of elevation required.

Keep in mind with scopes that the amount of correction is the full amount the scope moves and not from your zero. Based on the yardage you are wanting to shoot you will probably need to go to 25 or a 30 MOA base. Also shooting .308 at 1200 yds will be a big challenge and I hope you do not expect to do more than just punch paper.

http://egw-guns.com should have what you need. Also if you are really looking at shooting long range precision I would spend lots of time on Snipershide.com. Very good resource.

Definitely put at least 20 moa under your scope. There's just no reason not to do it. Depending on the load, the poster above is correct that 1,200 yards is going to be tricky with a .308. 175g SMK's going as fast as you can make them go will likely get there still supersonic, but only barely.
