Seeing how I have always wanted to build a shorty house gun I figured now would be a good time to pick up that 870. So went out to Sportsmans and got a 18.5" 870 for $250 and was pleased since I thought the price was good and even got one that had been un-molested!

Get her home and not a scratch on her (till I racked the pump a few times), Rems coat sucks the magtube started scratching up quick, don't really care because I'm going to dura-coat her. In any case I have over the last week made my orders and have been slowly test fitting the parts and other than a new pistol grip coming in the mail I have her done.

So I go to load up the scattergun tech (aka Wilson Combat) magtube extension and wha???? I can only load 4 roounds. So I think that maybe the spring is crimped so I take it off and look, its fine. So looking at the mag tube I notice 2 little detents in the tube to keep the folloer in...SOB so my question is...

Can I drill it out or grind it without damaging the integrity of the tube or does anyone else have any consructive ideas?

I have had a 870 a long time ago and never had this so is this a new generation thing or what, anyone else have this issue?

In the same boat. According to Internet research (which is never wrong, right?) the 870 express, at least with newer models, has the two nubs you saw. They can be removed a few different ways. First hit on google has a DIY: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=53267

Still trying to figure out how I want to do it.

Brownells makes a tool to get "dents" out of tubes. I belive they started doing this in 80s when they switched to the new spring retainer.

Nope-common issue-Remmys have "dimples" that need to be removed.
A bunch of ways to skin a cat here-how are you with a round file and getting your knuckles bloody. Brake cylinder hone will do it but it is slow and you can "Bell" the magtube.
Or you can bring it over and I can clean them out for you.

I went looking through my socket wrench set for one that fit perfectly - used it to pound out the dimples. Use oil. Pretty standard operation.

Damn your logic Bp. You know I'm too damn impatient than that. I saw the $75 brownells tool and when I was done checking my empty wallet I grabbed the socket idea of of the earlier post and gave a stab at it.

Worked ok but my buddy has my punches with him so I said f*** it and broke out the dremmel and used a small pointed grinding wheel and ten minutes later the only dimples in my garage were the ones on my ass. Did a polish wheel on the inner tube as well. Cycled it and by damn my shotty has a 7 2.75" capacity. Woohoo!!!!!

Don't worry Bp I still have my co workers rem that needs sights as well as mine (just haven't picked out the ghost rings I want), also I think I want to port mine as well.

Take it to Rob over at Bowers, he did mine. He does and great job and is very reasonable.

Just send it to a body shop that does paintless dent repair.

This is an old thread, but figured I'd add this link. Video is the procedure to drill out the detents.

Has anyone tried the socket method on the recessed ring at the end of the magazine extension? You know, the part of the mag extension that you put your screw for the barrel clamp.

Would getting rid of that indention make my 20" 870 an 8+1? I'm just not sure the magazine spring can compress enough to fit 8 rounds. Just wondering if anyone knows or has tried....before I start pulling out sockets and heading to the shop press.

getting rid of those indents and getting an extension would make it an 8+1. Simply getting rid of the dents would make it easier for your magazine tube cap to undo itself, but wouldn't help you fit any more rounds.

I don't think you're understanding me. I'm talking about modifying the extension and not the part attached to the receiver. This is not the "how do I get rid of the dimples" issue. Mag extension works fine. I am currently at 7+1, but want MORE! [Tooth]
