Update 04-05-11

Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances I will not be able to complete this season with Team in Training. I want to thank everyone that supported me and donated to this worthy cause. I will continue to run and train for next years season. Next year I will be ready to do a full distance 26.2 mile marathon

Its that time of year again for me. Some of you may remember that I signed up to run the Steamboat Spring marathon/half marathon last year. I did this for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Team in Training group. Well I did it. I ran 13.1 miles with their help and yours.

Im doing it again this year. I am signed up to run Steamboat again. I am running with Team in Training again for LLS. I am coming to my brothers and sisters here in the AR community and asking for your help again. As a group we can help fight these brutal diseases. I ask that you go to the link below and donate what you can to help these wonderful people that I am running for.

When people ask me why I am doing this my answer is simple. I am running for those who cant. Im running for those that cant go out on a sunny day because their bodies are too weak from these cancers. Now I ask you to help as well. $50.00 fills the tank in a car for a patient to get to needed treatments. For the cost of a couple boxes of ammo you can help.I know times are hard but I wouldnt be asking if I didnt believe in this cause and what they are doing. I ask my fellow AR shooters to do all you can to help.

Thank you for your help
Jeremy

I don't want to derail your thread, but I notice that every time I see a car with a 26.2 or a 13.1 sticker, I always get next to them so I can see if the driver is fat or not. This thread makes me want to go run right now. I'll be lucky if I can go half a mile without stopping. Wish me luck!

When I started this last year I was 230 lbs and hadnt excercised in years. I started by just trying to do a mile and go from there. I can now run at a 10 minute mile pace for my long runs. And im down to 190 lbs You can do it just start slow and keep at it. And I do have a 13.1 sticker on my care

I used to run a lot, and the furthest I ever ran was about 7 miles in a little over an hour. I started gaining weight though, the more I ran. Now I haven't run in about a year and weigh 20 lbs more than when I started running. My normal weight was was around 185lbs. Now I've been holding steady at about 205 lbs for the last year or so. I'm logging off to go run a half mile right now. I'll let you know how it went. Good thing you don't need breath to be able to type. :)

EDIT: Good for you by the way. Keep it up.

Cool. I just got back from team training. Did 1 mile speed runs. Got down to a 8 min flat on 1 of them. Keep it up you will be amazed how quickly your time and distance pick up[Beer]

I used to be able to run a 7 minute mile with very low 8 minute mile pace. I've fallen a pretty long way. Thanks for the encouragement.

I say don't worry about ur VO2 max, unless ur wanting to be a world class runner and have absolutely nothing else to train. But keep it up and only run at which ur comfortable at, never over do it or you'll end up hating it and stopping

Irving
03-03-2011, 20:13
I don't go out of my way to calculate the VO2 max, it is automatic with the logging program I use. I'm not worried about my VO2 because I'm pretty sure it will always be weak. I think the highest I've ever even seen was 32.

Irving

Yikes, that is a long run for sure. Can you give me a run down on how you do your 1 mile speed training? Do you carry when you run?

2008f450
03-04-2011, 10:36
We meet as a group on Wednsdays. Coach makes us run a mile at a comfy pace. Then 30 seconds rest before next mile at as fast as we feel able to pace. then another mile at same fast pace. then a cool down mile at our prefered race distance pace. So for me it goes mile 1 at 10 min mile. mile 2 at about 7:30 mile. mile 3 at about an 8 min mile and cool off mile at 10 min mile. I do carry a folding knife in my camelback when running.

Irving
03-04-2011, 10:39
That's a lot of miles! Most of the reason I stopped running and got so slow is because I stopped running with a group and can't effectively motivate myself.

What program do you use to log your runs and routes? I use Runnersworld.com (I was banned from the forums though). You can select shoes too, so I know almost exactly how many miles my expensive running shoes have on them.

2008f450
03-06-2011, 15:16
I dontuse a program. I write my time and miles on the calender everytime I run. I dont know what miles I have on my shoes either. I go by feel with my shoes not miles. When they start to feel flat I switch. I can say my current training shoes have about 35 miles on them. they were my race shoes from last year so 13.1 plus some break in miles and my training so far this year. I buy 2 pairs of shoes at a time. 1 set to train with 1 to race. thankfully the shoe I like is still made and REI is blowing them out cheap. So I will be getting 2 new pairs soon.

Irving

I've only ever had one pair of nice running shoes, and they don't have enough miles on them to replace them yet. I just thought it was cool to know how many miles I have on them.

The cool thing about the logs is that it automatically calculates your calories, pace, and VO2 max. The only one I ever really cared about was pace, but I still thought it was always cool.

I bought a watch last year that tells me all kinds of info. It tells me current pace, distance, calories burned, and it has a heart rate monitor feature that I dont use. It has way more functions than I use but it makes my life easier. My favorite feature is the virtual buddy. You tell it the pace you want to run and it tells you where you are compared to set pace. so if i slow a little it will show I am x amount of time behind and x amount of distance behind my buddy . Its great for my solo runs.

I hear that people like running with that Nike thing that you put on your shoe. It tracks your pace, plots your run, and sends you messages about distance and pace through your Ipod (interupts the song to report info). I think it is called the Nike + or something.

2008f450
03-07-2011, 22:48
I have heard of it. Heard that it works good but the sensor doesnt last long. I hear the battery in it lasts 30-60 hours before needing replacement even though Nike says 1000 hours. I will stick to my Garmin watch. Recharge it every 4or 5 days and its good to go

I'm disappointed that I've only run 1 time this whole week. But I ran a little longer, and a little faster. I was able to get into the low 9's per mile pace, but only for the first mile. I also just hit 100 miles on this pair of shoes.

Cool. Tommorow is group run for me. I need to start pushing my pace to where I want it. My target this year is to run at 9 min/mile average pace. We shall see.

Irving

9 min mile for a half marathon? That'd be great. I was looking at my past run logs. As soon as I stopped running with other people, my times dropped by 30 sec/mile, then a full min/mile.

I was going to ask you, what do you think about when you run? I often think about if I had to defend myself. I usually run at night, and I always worry that if I were attacked, whether I'd even have the energy to defend myself. Also, I tend to have a bad habit of looking at the ground when I run. I was trying my best to not do that tonight, and I think it helps distract me from how tired I am. I'm not totally oblivious when I run, I always look out for traffic, but I for sure don't like my tendency to look at the ground about 20 ft ahead of me.

Yep I want 9 mins for the whole distance. I still havent decided if im doing a half or a whole marathon. As far as what I think of. It depends. Tommorow it wil be which ever cute younger than I girl is in front of me. When I run a lone I think of a ton of different things. Generally though I try to push my self. Stuff like come on pick up the pace. So and so is waiting at the end with chocolate milk and a smile. Funny you mention looking down. Coach mentioned it Wed. during our group training. I look about 15 to 20 feet ahead. If I look at the horizon my mind startes to think of distance and it doesnt work for me. She said do what works. I did 13.1 that way and its working so Im not changing

I just worry that I'll not notice a group of shady people or something and run right up to them before I look up.

I do look up and around but my main focus is in front of me. But I also dont run at night.

Irving

About how many people do you run with?

One of my favorite group runs was what they called an Army Run, or Indian Run. Basically, everyone just runs in single file at a slightly slower pace, then the person in the back sprints to the front. When running with 8-12 people, the person in the rear can start as soon as the last person makes it to the front. We never tried it with just a few people, but I guess if you only have 3-5, then the front person just sets the pace for a while. That is a really fun way to do 2 mile runs.

Last saturday there was 8 people total. with weather getting warmer maybe 10 tommorow. We all run at different paces so we wind up kinda stretched out but there are a few that are around my pace so I let them take off ahead of me alittle then enjoy the scenery. Last week was 7 miles. I might try for 9 tommorow.

2008f450
03-21-2011, 19:22
No I havent. I am thinking of doing a 10K in late april or early may. Kind of a tune up and pace setting race for the June half marathon. My coach was looking into whats coming up around then for me

Irving
03-21-2011, 19:45
I hear that the Bolder Boulder is pretty fun. I've never run in an official race. I figured if I was running at least a 5k every time I ran (several nights a week at the time) anyway, then I should bother paying to do the same thing.

Bolder Boulder is supposed to be a lot of fun. Lots of people dressed in wierd and silly costumes. It is more of a fun race than a serious race. A few of the ladies in my training team do it every year.I think after this years half I will start doing 10Ks for fun and training.
