FORT COLLINS - Someone visiting the bathroom at Front Range Community College came in armed and left unarmed. A loaded handgun was left on the back of a toilet in a campus bathroom.
The pistol, and its brown leather holster, were found by a student Monday evening in a first-floor bathroom in the Challenger Point building. The pistol had a fully-loaded 15-round magazine, but did not have a round in the chamber.
Concealed carry is allowed on the Front Range campus and the rest of the Colorado Community College system.
A campus spokesman said college safety officers secured the gun and turned it over to Fort Collins Police.
The lost handgun can be claimed by its owner from the evidence room at the Fort Collins Police Department.
"That's a hell of an oversight," said the father of the student who found the gun. "What would have happened if some nutbag grabbed it?"
The father asked not to be identified, saying he fears retaliation by the absent-minded gun owner.
"They're supposed to be responsible gun owners, right? That's how they get to carry a permit," the father said. "I don't see where that's responsible."
"It certainly is unfortunate but I don't believe it's time to call in the National Guard," said Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, a gun-rights lobbying group.
Brown says it's not unheard of for a firearm to be left in a restroom.
"If you carry a gun every day, chances are good you could leave it somewhere," Brown said. "Especially in those circumstances where you're paying attention to something else."

Of course, just one more thing against us.

"If you carry a gun every day, chances are good you could leave it somewhere," Brown said. "Especially in those circumstances where you're paying attention to something else."

I don't care much for the above statement made by Dudley, Chances should NEVER be good that you'll leave a firearm somewhere, I don't care how long you've been carrying, or how often you carry.

Yes, that sounds pretty dumb.

here is what the liberal hears... "Its ok, I mean if someone uses the bathroom at your toddlers daycare they may leave their gun, but its no big deal".

sometimes it pays to just shut up.

How do you forget the most important thing you are carrying?

Dumb-asses like this make progression for us harder...I don't want to be too hard on anyone, we all make mistakes, but seriously, how do you forget that heavy thing on your belt when you walk out and think to yourself, "something feels different?"

I don't ever take my gun off while in the restroom. I tried it the other day because I was tired of making sure I held it up above the bottom of the wall while I was in the first stall. It was a pain and I won't do it again.

I'd say that this is an example that even people who aren't focused so heavily on gun rights can/will still do the right thing.

A gun was left completely unattended in a bathroom stall, and it was STILL turned in to the police and nothing bad happened. I'm surprised no one took the gun, got into a heated debate, and shot the other guy for not believing in the invisible hand.

1- How could you ever "misplace" your sidearm?
2- Why would you set it on the back of a toilet?

The timing is suspect to me. With the upcoming vote on "Constitutional Carry"?
What better way for an "Anti" to plant a seed?
Not to mention adding to the fuel of carrying on campus controversy.

well, to be fair. whenever i pinch a loaf here at work I unholster my gun and place it on the back of the toilet. otherwise it falls to the floor when i pull my pants down. ;)

Who? The same person who just happens to look at the back of a toilet and claims he found it.

Yeah, now that you guys mention it, does sound quite fishy. Only a Lib would be too scared to chamber a round in a pistol.

Hmm, how odd.

I remember taking the gun out of its holster while I was wiping - I had Indian BBQ for lunch. And I remember holstering my gun and thinking it would be funny to leave the sodden TP on the back of the toilet... so if I left the gun there, then what did I do with the soiled paper? Hmmm.... [JRope]

This.

And I can tell you, more than one sworn officer has left it in the restroom at the local donut hut. I'm always glad to hear the gun was found and secured by a concerned citizen. So much better than the worst case scenario.

I agree it sounds funny.

For the record I carry a CompTac Infidel clip style IWB holster and if I have to take the browns to the super bowl I will set it on the back of the toilet, on the floor or where ever it will not be seen or swiped while I am busy. BUT I cant ever see forgetting it any where? I have set it in my drawers before also just depends. After over 10 years of CCW I dont check to make sure its there every 30 seconds like when I started, but I know when its not there. I forgot it on the kitchen table one day when running to the gas station (I was mowing the yard and not packing) made it about 2 blocks before turning around [ROFL2]

The owner. I'd be shocked as hell if the ATF hasn't done a trace forward already.

I love the "some nutbag" comment, seriously, that's like telling women they shouldn't walk around in a tank top because they might be raped.

The psychology of some people is obvious, HE has "nutbag" thoughts himself, so he must ascribe them to others or he'd had to check himself into Charlie Sheen's world.

But it is damn weird.

My solution I've used since the seventies...

if you're going to pull down your pants, always place your gun between your feet inside your pants - then you have access to it and you just cant forget you have it. But that's not to say some cretin wont still forget.

Wow, some of the folks here are unforgiving! For one, it's a bit tin foil hat to jump to the conclusion that this is likely a planted situation just to harm gun owners and conservatives in general - maybe it is and maybe it isn't but my first thought is that it sounds like it could have happened. The other is that while it may be irresponsible to leave your weapon on the toilet after your business, it is an accident and those tend to happen now and again. I personally leave mine clipped in place and tuck it into my pants so it doesn't scrape that nasty area around the toilet, but I could see someone wanting to remove it for similar reasons and being distracted or absent-minded and leaving it behind.

It just seems a bit harsh. I'm sure nobody has ever had a moment of lapsed reason but I have so that probably sets me apart as sympathetic to this guy :).

See my man but you're even taking precautions on clipping your arm in a way that it doesn't even get shit on it. So even you're thinking ahead lololo

If you know you have a tendancy to be an absent minded person then take those extra minutes and precautions to offset you being an absent minded person.

Leaving a gun really can happen happen by mistake. I was working on an FBI agents car in my shop. It took about 45 min to make the repair. She paid the bill and left. I noticed a little while a small book type bag. I opened it up and found she had left her gun behind. I called her up and she came back and got the gun. She apologized and said she was an FBI agent. I told her it was no big deal. She never came back. Was it my service? haha

Sure it CAN happen, but it shouldn't. I don't see any reason, or excuse for leaving a firearm anywhere, by mistake. When you have a firearm on your person, it needs to be treated differently than your keys, wallet, cell phone etc.

You have the makings of a fine internal affairs agent. You would see all kinds of reasons and hear all kinds of excuses, and almost everything is a mistake or someone elses fault.

Some states have enacted laws which criminalize the act of leaving a loaded firearm in any location where a minor could gain access. I am not aware of any such laws in Colorado, so if this is your gun, please go pick it up before it becomes a manhole cover.

*IF* I Have a Code red alert and have to drop trou in a public room. Furthest stall, it stays clipped to the belt and gets a "Cover of paper".
If its just a leak I Still use a stall... nothing like having business in hand and distracted and some jackass disarming you from behind because they saw you at the range.

Certainly the timing of this incident, along with the father's willingness to make a public statement critical of gun owners to the press, is highly suspect.

However, this sort of thing is not unheard of. Happens to plainclothes and off duty law enforcement officers with clip-on IWB holsters every now and then.

Something is not right. Although I have gone into bathroom stalls and found a pager or later on cellphones. Good thing I found it too. What if some nutbag found it and used it club someone to death. I thought people who believe in free speech are suppose to be responsible. Good thing it wasn't a assault book like war and peace. Those things are heavy.

sometimes people forget things. the guy got ready for a wicked growler and after a labor intensive workout, he was late to class and took off quick, maybe he was texting on his cell, pulled his pants back up and took off to rail some chick who was lonely.

you don't know the situation. accidents happen. just be glad he wasn't fondling it and had one in the chamber, then had a ND and shot some kid washing his hands.

at least the finder of the gun was good enough to turn it in, instead of taking it. no harm done.
