So just bought my 1st 1911. Kimber Pro Carry 2. Pretty exciting day! Love it! I was wondering about getting some custom grips made. It came with the rubber Kimber grips but being my 1st 1911 I'd like to do something special. Anyone know who could make some? Or if I bought some aftermarket wood grips if anyone does engraving? Just curious. Like to make them my own. Thanks guys.

I'd wait a while and borrow some grips before I did a custom thing.

I've carried one for about 20 years now (ouch) and I can fondly remember the days when I thought the old diamond pattern in the wood was cool - until I put a few hundred rounds through one in a weekend. My thumb was sore and bleeding from flicking the safety off and on and my palm was a little chewed up too. Since then I've come to appreciate smooth grips and especially smooth rubber grips. Why?

Well, until you've had a case give way on standard wood grips, you don't appreciate the metal plate built into most rubber grips, if I hadn't been wearing a glove that day I'd have seriously wounded my hand, as it was it was just a little cut.

Custom is cool though, I think a lot of us have "barbeque guns" those that we wear when we open carry to show off to our friends.

Custom scales can be expensive too, 100 and up.

There are a ton of manufacturers out there that will customize grips for you for the 1911, take your time and make a good decision, or you'll end up with a box of very expensive little bits of wood that you don't use because they make your gun handle bad, and ultimately isn't it all about carrying the gun for practical purposes?

Very good point! Thank you! The rubber grips are great and serve their purpose well, I shoot my pistols a lot! For most of my range days those will be the primary grip. But it is fun to have some add on toys for those days you wanna look your best! HAHA!

Rattlesnake skin grips would fit the bill for show grips.
Sorry I still can't figure out how to post a link.
