View Full Version : Looking for opinions on fixed blade knives

Here's the scoop- after tax time subsides and before the summer really kicks off I would like to purchase a nice fixed blade knife. While I don't really want to spend an arm and a leg, I would like something that holds a decent edge and will take a little abuse without breaking. Would like something that would do duty as a camp/hunting/tactical blade. Would like to keep the cost below about $150 if possible. I embrace technology so something modern with composite handles or a polymer sheath would be preferred over something with a wooden handle and leather scabbard. First hand opinions are preferred and don't be afraid to post pictures if you have them. Thanks in advance.

I've had a Ka-Bar D2 "Extreme" something or other for a few years now. IIRC I paid $80 on Amazon.com, where I get all my knives, and it's done me pretty well for how much I've abused it. Has some kind of composite rubbery grip (rubbery enough to make it comfortable and easy to grip but hard enough that its not sticky rubber), a blade made of D2 tool steal that holds an edge like none other, and it came with a polymer/zytel/whatever reversible sheath.

Specs:

For $90:

I really like the TOPS knives, the Trackers are great or all of their stuff is great, awesome steel and great edges, I have a Rangers Edge II, and a Tracker too. They are tough as shit and if you pick one up You will feel the quality. Just a option.

Tom Brown Tracker from TOPS Knives
SOG Seal 2000
Kabar Fighting knife

Those 3 will do everything you are wanting. The tracker is spendy but will last you for forever, along with the other 2.

Anything TOPS will run ya a good chunk of change, decent knives though.

SOG makes some great stuff, but I wouldn't recommend em for what you're looking for. I have a SEAL, and although its a great knife that's put up with most of the crap I've thrown at it, the Ka-Bar is tougher and cheaper (in my experience anyway). The SOG Bowies are pretty good but IMO too pretty to beat on.

If you don't mind putting down just a little more cash than a Ka-Bar, ScrapYard Knife Co is hands down the toughest I've come across.
Look at the Scrapper 6, awesome knife. Also check out the Yard Guard, basically the Scrapper 6 just a little bigger and thicker.

I knew Stag would be in shortly to make me drool over his ESEE knife collection, that Junglas is THE SH!T, and I will own one someday.

As far as my experience, I enjoy my Sog Seal Pup Elite, it holds an edge VERY well, and is tough as nails.

I am another Ka-Bar follower. I haven't found a thing that Ralph's $600.00 Randall can do that the $60.00 ka-bar cant.
Just do yourself the favor and get the one with the synthetic grip and sheath. The leather handle gets slippery when wet, and the leather scabbard is not a friend to sea water.

Stainless steel is too soft and doesn't hold it's edge under field conditions. Stainless doesn't mean "rust proof" it means "rust resistant" in that you still have to care for and oil the blade. Stainless is great for cutlery, not so much for carry blades.

As for an all in one knife, I've gotta say that it's a hard choice. You can't do tactical with a good field blade simply because it will be pretty heavy. In order to cut mustard with me a blade has to be capable of chopping a 2 inch branch without losing it's edge, or making my arm fall off. Not a lot of blades qualify in this respect.

Consider though, anything a small blade can do a large blade can do, but not the reverse. Sure it's unweildy to cut a cord with a large knife, but it's not impossible, but it IS impossible to use a small blade to chop a branch or defeat brush.

And I've got to give a great big "hell yeah" to Tops knives, compared to the other knives made of similar materials they are the most cost effective without being all fancy. I've never had a TOPS knife that didn't make me happy.

I'm not especially fond of bowie style blades, because I consider the tip too weak. For a field blade I consider 1/4 inch tool steel to be optimal. I don't know why it always happens, but I always end up needing to pry something loose and a 1/4 inch tool steel blade takes the punishment without bending or snapping. All that being said, I do own a bowie!

Something about knive collecting and use is as alluring as gun collecting, all kinds for all kinds of applications.

Oh, "tool steel" is the steel described in the 1xxx (1 thousand) series of steels. It's higher in carbon and therefore more rigid, it's also harder than stainless steel.

There's this ridiculously insane test that a a blade has to go through for the maker to be considered a bladesmith, bending to 90 degrees and return without breaking, chopping up some 2x4's and still being able to shave hair off your arm, etc... to be able to do both of these things, a bladesmith has to balance the steel and temper/harden it with obsessive skill - the kind of skill you gain by years of practice.

Most/many blades you'll buy today are pattern blades, that is they are cut on a water table from a sheet of stock, then CNC milled and ground to shape and painted/scaled. This includes TOPS, ESEE, and others. A lot of knives are made in china/taiwan/japan and most of them are a variety of stainless steel, TOPS outright admits their folders are chinese made (to their specs), but I don't consider folders to be serious field knives.

Cold Steel and Spyderco have a somewhat harder stainless steel they use (spyderco is harder) and spyderco almost exclusively uses hollow ground blades which are sharper, but slightly weaker than a V ground blade. Cold steel used to put out an insanely sharp and hard Tanto, all edges mirror polished right out of the box to be able to shave your arm. They don't do that anymore, don't know why. But they are both still stainless steel and therefore softer than tool steel.

Kabar knives are a good buy, I buy from www.tomarskabars.com and find their prices are the lowest. I'm also a fan of Becker knives (Ethan Becker was an outdoorsman who co-wrote "The Joy of Cooking") because they're simple, 1/4 inch tool steel and they chop all day long. The Companion is a GREAT knife for well under 100 bucks. They don't make the Brute anymore, but I have one, wish they did!

So, to summarize - avoid stainless. 1/4 inch (some 3/16 inch is workable in larger knives), don't pay for a name - pay for the steel. Otherwise you'll end up with a safe-queen knife that you are afraid to mar.

There was a lot of confusion with the RAT name-Ontario had RAT and Jeff had RC for Rat Cutlery then he went with ESEE which was part of his training logo.Jeff is a great guy and participates on the forum on a regular basis. A real no BS guy. BF is a great forum if your into knives. I think there's a sub forum for every brand.

Oh, man you have started something now :) I stayed home sick today. So with time on my hands every since I saw your picture i've been online reading about ESEE knives! I love knives and I have got to have one of these. I'm sure it will turn out to be not just one though - LOL! I've been on the BF forum reading some of the posts also. So I think I am going to order a 4 in the DT. I will mostly use it for backpacking and like the lighter weight than the 5 and think it is big enough for any use i would have.

I did see a Benchmade for a very good price today. I even had to look twice because the price was well below $100. I might have to go check it out. But will probably just end up with one of ESEE models since no one has anything negative to say about them.

Nice combo hurley. Yeah the Junglas seems to be real hard to find lately. Glad I got mine when I did. [Beer]
Not sure who is selling the HEST anymore,ESEE cut ties with the Dpx line.

Thanks man! The knife connection has a few of the HEST knives, thinking I should jump on one while I still can.

I've been watching this thread and after all the posts and reading quite a bit independent information, I just ordered the ESEE 4 as well. That looks to be a handy knife to have!

Good choice! I haven't had the chance to use it yet (just received it yesterday), but it really feels like the perfect middle of the road knife, between something like the 6 or the Junglas, and something smaller like the Izula. The thickness of the blade is just right IMO, and it is Razor sharp out of the package. Only other thing I will likely purchase for this knife, is the Moly backing, and possibly one of the pouches to carry a few items. What color did you get? Be sure to post some pics. Definitely going to have to start a Rat pack now.

I just ordered the ESEE 5. I could not decide between the 4 and 5. I like the thickness the 5 offered.

That 5 appears to be a BEAST, See what you started here Stag, I think Randall should give you a free Knife of your choice, for all the money you have made him, lol.

I'm just glad to see happy local ESEE customers like myself. I know it sounds like kool aid but quality speaks for itself. Enjoy and use them. I think you folks will also be surprised by the tough coating on the blades. I don't believe any of you have made a mistake with your purchases. [Beer]

Quality definitely speaks for itself. I haven't owned any super expensive knives, but the ESEE knives have so far surpassed the quality of anything I've owned in the past.

To me the Esee 4 just looks like it should be used. Some of my other knives look nice, but I'm careful with how I use them because I don't want to mess them up. But the Esee isn't like that - it's a real working knife! I like the looks of the Izula in the pictures that have been posted. Will get one of those at some point also.

Get a sharp one.

We make our own from ST ST saw blades the big ones used for concrete sawing, hell to get the first edge on it but after that they are outstanding for holding an edge.

I got the tan all decked out with all the goodies, it was like $125 with everything on The Knife Connection.

For you folks who recently joined the ESEE fan club. Seems to have been a falling out on blade forums and they've opened their own forum. Just an FYI.

Wow, that was quick, I was on blade forum a few days ago and everything seemed fine, unless I missed something. Tried to register on the ESEE forum and it looks like registration has been disabled by the administrator.

ESEE Forum Closed
We've closed the forum per Jeff's request. Sorry guys, please take all ESEE discussion to the General Forum

Edit by Blues: Folks, let's all stand by. I'm in touch with both Jeff and Spark and this issue may be resolved later on this evening. However, Spark and Jeff are both on the road at the moment so it may take a little bit. No promises either way but there is some reason to remain optimistic.BF requires a company rep to mod their respective forums. I wonder if it just got to be too much.

The Kershaw forum was closed when the rep pulled out and that was a popular one.

EDIT:

Guess I should have read first.

There's a thread in GD from Jeff telling how to register. There's still a few hangups.
Apparently Jeff and Mike got tired of threads being moved by a BF mod. Their philosophy was not just about their knives but how they were used and anything that was outdoor related and the mod didn't agree so the decision was made that they needed their own forum.

Hmmmm, Sounds like some drama I wouldn't have wanted to take part in anyway. I will get signed up on the new forum.
