Picked up a Ruger SRH in 454 Casull a few months back that had the standard 7 1/2 barrel. It was a little long for my liking and preferred something shorter without going to a SA or Ruger Alaskan.

TJ Gunsmithing did a chop job on the SRH, cutting the barrel to a little over 4", moving the sight, bead blasting the Ruger gray finish and easing the edges of the trigger.

This is how she turned out:

This is what I call bulldog ugly but I like it. Portability is excellent in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster and the 4" (actually 4 1/8") barrel is a good compromise between packing in the mountains and muzzle blast/noise typical of the Ruger Alaskan.

I wouldn't call shooting the 454 Casull fun, but it is not uncomfortable until you have fired more than three cylinders. I was shooting Buffalo Bore 360gr Hardcast and Doubletap's 400gr Hardcast ammo. Accuracy was around 2" shooting offhand at 25 yards, not including the "fouling" round I fired when I wasn't sure what this beast was going to be like. Accuracy wasn't my primary objective either; just trying to get accustom to the revolver.

Recoil is manageable but you could feel it in the palm of my hand. Muzzle blast was neglible with double hearing protection, but I think I scared off the guy shooting in the lane next to me at the indoor range.

After shooting about 20 rounds with the 454 SRH, I picked up my Wilson 9mm. Felt like I was shooting a rimfire pistol.

Experiment worked out pretty well and I'm pleased with the result. May not be the prettiest, but it sure is functional.
