View Full Version : Convince me...stock upgrades

Finally, after too many years, I'm plowing thru upgrades on my 6920. Have a rail, BUIS and fore-grip on the the way, optics [<-- my focus point now] and sling are next and then I have the remaining nice to have stuff I'll slowly procure.

First to admit I remain an "AR newb" but...I'm having fun with bolt-ons and trying to get my Colt "where I want it." I'm having a hard time rationalizing an upgraded stock though, not a money thing, I just don't know what I don't know. The stock stock [had to say that] on my 6920 has been more than adequate for my needs but...convince me a Magpul is better (educate me). I've been struggling with both a CTR & UBR, what am I missing other than necessary experience? I don't give a rats-ass about pretty pictures and what looks good...it's all about function and performance for me.

Thanks.

Let me preface this by saying this is nothing against you but more a general statement. That said I have never understood the "convince me I should buy this" thing. If you need to be convinced and told why you need something, my guess is that you don't. I find that if most people have a need for something they research what will best fill that need. If the stock stock is "more then adequate" for you, then I would say you don't need anything else. :)

Just my thought.

I upgraded my stock to a CTR because the standard adjustable stock that came with my AR was too loose and drove me nuts.

the only real advantage i see to upgrading stocks is to get better cheek weld if the rifle just doesn't sit right in your grip, or due to being too loose. technically being too loose isn't a PROBLEM but it can be an annoyance. an annoyance necessitating $250 upgrade? not in my opinion. but spending $50-100 to fix it and get a better cheek weld is really the only reason i upgraded mine. im not a fan of ubr's but i know lots of people love them, including a buddy of mine. vltor modstocks, spomod clones (spomods are too expensive if you ask me for what you get), and magpul ctr stocks seem like reasonable upgrades. i have a sopmod clone after getting rid of my sopmod and an vltor modstock. BCM has the vltor ones for like $50. they can pull whiskers a little but otherwise i really like it. both have very solid feel and provide a good cheek weld

after all that being said, everyone has their own preferences. you just have to see what you like

oh and as far as the ctr, the best thing about it, in my opinion, is the ability to set it more or less wherever you want. i don't think its necessary, but might be nice for some people that can't find a stock to feel right at the different positions. if you like your bone stock one id keep it, save a lot of money you can use on something else.

There are many options, but i would say that having a lever guarded within the stock, and improved stability are improvements worth having.

To that end, the MOE stock is a good improvement for not too much, but certainly not the only option.

So i'm going through the same thing...I wanted to dump all my factory stuff and go on an upgrade route. I settled on the MOE hardware. For 50$ give and take some change the magpul stuff is really nice. I prefer the ergo grip over the moe grip. I tried the vltors/lmt/ace and a few others and just kept coming back to the moe. For that price, if you don't like u can dump it on the accessories page and probably get a majority of your money back...

I sure like my VLTOR, much better cheek weld.

I appreciate all the feed-back gentlemen, thank you. More "basic" questions coming...[Tooth]

We have yet to find any stock that makes us shoot more efficiently.... Stock ones work great. If you want something pretty, have a girl hold your gun for you.

I've tried just about all the stocks listed in the thread so far. I use an LMT SOPMOD on both my gun at work and my fake workgun back home. I can get a great cheek weld with it and a rubber pad on the bottom of the stock is a must since I do all my shooting at work and most of my shooting at home wearing armor. It is hands down my favorite stock... It's also $200 brand new.

The Magpul ACS or the VLTOR are viable substitutes and can be had for MUCH less. Another poster already mentioned it but BCM has the VLTORs on sale for about $50 here (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Vltor-Carbine-Modstock-Basic-Kit-p/vltor%20acb-2s%20black.htm).

The Magpul UBR is a great stock to use if you need to balance out a rifle (can, light, laser, longer barrel, whatever). I've got one on my Larue OBR and it works great. It's also heavy and expensive.

The Magpul CTR/MOE is also a good stock. I personally don't see a lot of value added by a CTR over a MOE considering the cost difference but to each his own.

Now, all that said, is a stock upgrade really needed? How much additional ammo could you put towards training with the gun for the cost of upgrades that are largely for appearance?

I'm not trying to start a purse fight with that question. Like I said, at one time or another I've bought every stock on this list out of pocket. It's just something to keep in mind when looking at the latest gee-wiz gear.

Mick, - Thank you, very helpful input and you have me diggin' on LMT & VLTOR options as well now. That said; and since I remain in research "shotgun" mode let me ask about this one too. Thoughts / comments on MagPul's ACS stock? Have not heard much about it vs the CTR and UBR products.

I did get my DD Omega 7 installed last night with a TROY BUIS and Fwd grip later today. This friggin' rail is sweet.

The Magpul ACS is one of the few products that Magpul makes that I don't have any time on. I've only finger fucked them in shops. I wouldn't be comfortable running my mouth about something I don't have experience with. Sorry.

I'm sure if you hang around a little while someone who owns one can chime in though.

Good luck with your project too. The perfect rifle always seems to be one more modification away. [Beer]

I can't really shoot well with a M4 style stock on. I opted for a UBR and I love it. Its a bit heavy but it counters the 16" barrel well. Don't know quite yet if worth the $220 but it's looking that way, I really like it.

I like UBRs because chicks dig them.

I have an ACS and love it its not super heavy if you keep crap out of it. but it has places for storage if you need to balance your rifle out. Mine has been rock solid and very comfortable to shoot with. I can send you pic of the one on my rifle or answer any questions that you might have... just shoot me a pm I'm horrible about checking threads I've posted on

I chose a Magpul adjustable stock that I thought was called the PRS. Maybe that has changed. My stock is visible under "Flatlander's First Effort".

It's a heavy piece but I wanted the mass to balance the heavy-profile barrel I used. It worked. The rifle pivots just where I wanted it to balance.

I also knew that I'd need some elevation adjustment going from the optic to the irons. Also, I'd be mounting various optics, whose bore line elevation and eye relief would change. I wanted flexibility.

With a nominal retail of $245, I managed to find mine on sale for $194, $205 with shipping.

I'm happy. [AR15]

Good god man!! [Puke]

No doubt...

That said, just what IS THAT in the crack of that chicks ass, a left-over turd? The end of a remote control maybe? Or, just a piece of that "fancy fringe caught-up in some cottage cheese?"

I can say this...I have my stock...let this thread die as I can't take it... [Help]

preference.

I run an ACS from Magpul (http://store.magpul.com/prod_detail_list/87) in FDE because it gives me a place to put Batteries for my mall-Ninja crap(Lights/Laser) and a compartment for my bore-snake.
I Also like the Cheek weld, look, Feel and balance it affords.

my BEST advice is to try out different ones until you find one you like.
Shoot your friend's, try some out at shops, etc..
