View Full Version : Question about round counts on used weapons

I'm not a collector, just someone who loves firearms and loves to put rounds down range. I'm wondering how so many folks when they list their weapons for sale have what seems to be fairly accurate round counts. If I think about my AR (unlike so many here I just have one lowly AR and a pittance of just 10 or so firearms - I feel so inadequate :) ) I couldn't tell you how many rounds I've put through it. Even on my seldom fired weapons I could maybe guess but it would only be a guess.

During the recent ammo crisis it was easy to keep count rounds fired, NONE ! You just bought all you could when you could find any and just horded it and kept telling everyone that you had none.
With the weapons that I have purchased new, I have a decent memory as to when I have shot them and an approximation as to the number or rather boxes of ammunition I put through them.
As far as the weapons that I have bought used, I really don't have a clue as to how many rounds have been fired. I try to guesstimate by the condition and wear.

Between my AR and my 10/22 I don't even want to think about it. Some of them I keep a rough count

Remember the rule of three! If they say "it's about 500 or so" then it's really like 1500![LOL]

Most of my guns I can guesstimate to within fifty rounds or so. My Glock 17 would be to within a few hundred or so. I have several thousands of rounds through that 17 and I have taken very good care of it. But if you look in the right places you can tell that it has been used a lot.

If she "looks like the village bicycle" then she probably is![UZI]

I buy the rounds, shoot them and when the box is empty that's how many I shot.

Well I like ranger only having under a dozen guns guess that I really have a case of OCD when it comes to keeping track of rounds. For me it's kind of a history a gunfax if you will. After every time I shoot I just count up the empty boxes ( I as of yet don't do any reloading) then I just add the totals to an excel file. My obsession even reaches as far has trying to have a even number of rounds fired (ex. My 30-06 has 129 fired and it's driving me nuts). Also when I break down the gun after shooting I inspect it thoroughly and if any thing doesnt seem right or I have something new I take a photo and do a compare (told you OCD).

Bob Said it right about the used and surplus guns. I take what the previous owner tells me and evaluate it against the condition of the gun and usually I add about 50-100% more than what was said the round count depending how well I know the last owner. I will say this though every deal I have done here has been on my opinion with honest owners that kept decent track of that info.

Well Mazin, just step out to your back yard and pop off a round of 30-06 and you will be at an even130.
It'll take the Brighton PD about 20 min. To respond, and by then you can be out milling in the street with the rest of the neighbors acting confused as to where the sound of the shot came from. [LOL]

I have no clue. I guess I could try and do some math but on some it might be a little difficult.

My Fal's it would be comical. Barrel #1 made in 58 and ask the Germans how many rounds. Then ask the Turks that bought it how many rounds. 43 years later I bought it. Second best shooter I have. [Coffee]

I am of a mind that condition and how it shoots are more important than round count. I have had a new barrel on a gun that shot like crap and after being "worked on" a few times still shot like crap.

To be honest it scares me when someone says that they have only shot 100 rds in 5 years. Tells me that they do not like the gun for one reason or another.

Around here the guns that are fun and accurate are the ones that get shot. I do have a couple that are fun to shoot because the ammo is cheap but they are also pretty accurate as well.

I had a 10/22 barrel that I know of a verified 30,000 rounds through it before I swapped it with a heavy .920 barrel. still shot good as new.

I think most people guess. some flat lie on round counts. you can tell which guns have a lot of rounds through them.

I think i read where ruger did 30,000 rounds through is SP9 and it was still going strong, so if someone shoots more than that, they are very wealthy and probably wouldn't have had that gun in the first place.

Great replies, thanks! Sounds like it's an even mix of counting, guessing and not really giving a crap. I'm with everyone else that says it's the gun and not the count.

I lost count on my carry gun after about 5,000, and that was with in the first two years I had it.

i have a few guns that due to at one time ammo shortages if they have 2-500 rds through them have a lot. hell my Adams Arms piston ar has 240 down it and that piston kit went on last year. just have not run it out. now my dedicated (one of) AR 22lr uppers has quite a few fed brown box bulk packs down it.I figure it doesn't matter what caliber you shoot it's how much training / practice you do with the tools you have. keep in mind some folks have more holster wear on their gun then rounds.

I bought whenever its a good deal or simply to try it out. I hate selling because I am abit OCD. I still have a few pistols, rifles and at least 2 shotguns that I haven't shot yet and they have been in the gun room for at least 2 years. I am working on my OCD, but it would easier to buy more ammo and shoot the heck out of these toys. [Tooth]

For some guns, I rip off the end of the box and put it in with the gun at the range. My Sig I kept the labels in the case under the foam, so I could tell how many went through it.

I have to wonder how many my K98 mauser has through it and the notches it could have on it. or my M44 or 91/30

I used to be like Mazin and try to keep track and keep files on my computer, but then I learned to bump-fire and said fuck it.

For my ARs and Glocks, I tended to count in cases. this gets me close. For other stuff, I tend to have a fairly good idea.

I have one rifle that has less than 200 rounds through it. But I've only had it about 2 weeks, so that kind of explains it.

Funny, I was talking yesterday about this very thing with a buddy. About how we see very cool guns that would be great shooters, that "only" have 50 rounds or less. It's one thing maybe if you're buying from someone who bought it as a night stand gun 20 years ago, but from people who care enough to join gun forums, how could you not shoot something well and often? Maybe if it's in an expensive caliber, but a typical 9mm or .45?

For milsurp rifles that I like, I have no idea. For handload stuff, I keep a notebook, which goes to the range. That keeps load data & number of reloads on the batches of brass. For example, I have a pair of Ruger Vaqueros in 45LC that must have at least 7000 rounds apiece. Because I bought them new and have never used commercial I have a good idea.

There are safe queens which rarely go to the range so I have a good idea how many rounds I fired. Of course, since most were bought used I don't know for sure.

I try to keep track of the rounds I put through most of my guns. Generally when I go to the range I take X amount of ammo for each gun Im shooting. I keep a log of all my guns and put it in there when I get home and clean them all up. The only guns I dont keep track of are my .22s I have 1 Browning buckmark pistol that is about 15 years old and I would guess it has over 150,000 through it. It goes out everytime I shoot and gets at least a brick through it.When I used to go to the indoor range 3 times a week it got a brick everytime just to blow off some steam and giveme more time on the trigger. I keep track of mine for parts replacement issues and if I do sell one I want to be as honest about rounds down the pipe as I can.

Most guns I do. I don't shoot a multiplicity of weapons, if you buy a gun from me (for instance) I'm selling it because I don't shoot it, or don't like shooting it. You can get a general idea of wear on any gun by checking the load bearing surfaces.

Some sportsman's group once did an actual survey of new gun buyers, 1 year after purchase 93 percent of guns purchased hadn't been fired more than 50 rounds - this was especially true for handguns.

But sometimes round count is just silly, like with 22's. I'm pretty certain my 22 revolvers have had more than 10k rounds each through them, but it would be hard to tell that. I have a primary carry/carbine and a backup to each. The backups get used once a year for function check, and the primarys get used a lot, but in a measured way. Putting 1k rounds downrange for PRACTICE in a day is simply wrong. I do make think of shooting for training and shooting for fun are two different things.

My beater guns, hell, I don't have any idea what's been through them. They're not beat up, but an AK is an AK, same for SKS. Same for glock.

I think that a lot of guys get all hung up on "round count" because they've got some idea that it affects value if they resell. Those of us who shoot a lot, KNOW that all guns fail or need replacement parts and we just consider it to be part of the sport - we don't care much that a spring should have lasted longer, or a firing pin shouldn't have worn out - we just replace the things and move along.

I also think it's become some kind of selling point, you know (nearly new) is worth more. Well, that study holds true for most guns in the world, maybe not for US, but for the rest of the world - they just don't get shot all that much - until we get our hands on them, then we either shoot them, or move them along to someone who will (but probably wont).

Some guns are round count sensitive. Ive seen this in pistols and rifles. All rifles will eventually eat the throat away and the accuracy will suffer. Some are so sensitive to this, you can tell to within 20 rounds when the throat goes; like 6.5-284s. (the more the caliber is overbored the faster the throat erodes.) The first batch of M9s were predictable in breaking the slide or lock block wings (or both) around 10k. So sometimes it matters.

Other times, it's simply a way to weigh the potential cosmetics. I have a glock 34 with 90k rounds, thens of thousands of draws and reloads, and bounced off a prop or two. So, it's been uglified a little. Still shoots like new.
