I was thinking about a tac light mounted at the 12 o'clock position in front of the front sight post, but the only mounts I saw for this application were barrel mounts. Is it a bad idea to use these types of clamps on your AR barrel? Will it adversely effect the rifle or POI?

Yes.
+1. Try(if you can) for a 9 6 or 3 o clock spot. Do you have a railed or Standed M4/A2 handgaurd?

You can actually send your FSB to Michiguns to have a rail mounted to it to attach a 12 o'clock light.
The position is a good idea, actually. Its the barrel mounts that are not. Between heat, and ease of deflect both of the accessory as well as barrel pressure with the existing mounts, it doesn't end up working as intended.

Thanks for the input. It didn't sound like a viable option, but with so many barrel mounts out there they (mfgs.) make it sound like no big deal. Glad I asked!
