View Full Version : Anyone carry a full size 1911
If you carry a full size 1911 35-45 oz loaded. What are you using as a holster? Best way to distribute the weight?
I've carried a CZ 75B in a Comptac M-Tac before. It was for sure heavier than usual carry piece, but I thought the weight was distributed pretty well.
Raven (http://www.ravenconcealmentsystems.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=8&products_id=1575) or Galco Jak Slide (http://www.usgalco.com/HolsterPG3.asp?ProductID=864&GunID=28) I carry my full size year round, just have to adjust clothing choices in the summer. I offset the weight with spare mag & phone, and use a Tactical Tailor belt.

Holsters are important, but a good rigid belt, 1.75" or better is more significant to prevent sag. Even a raven or other high quality scabbard will be uncomfortable if you wearing a leather belt prone to stretching and flopping.
Either leather with rigid nylon inserts, or a rigid synthetic is the secret to comfortable carry.
1.75" won't fit through the belt loops on most of my jeans. I use a 1.5" wilderness with a VMII or an MTAC. No issues at all.

I some times forget that people still wear blue jeans.
Yes, 1.5 in a good belt like wilderness should be fine.

Any dual clip/loop style IWB holster will carry a full size 1911 easily (one recommendation would be the Lobo IWB (http://www.lobogunleather.com/5_iwb_style_for_revolvers_and_autos)).
I carry a full size CZ75 in a Lobo pancake holster modified to IWB with dual clips and it carries just fine. Keep in mind my CZ is both heavier and bulkier than your svelte 1911.
Just make sure you have a good belt and you'll be fine, and 1.5 inch is plenty wide.
Normally I carry something smaller and lighter, but when I carry a 1911 it is either in a Galco shoulder rig or a Front Line IWB with nylon insert.

Firemoth is right on the money about the importance of a good belt. My preference are the Ares Gear Ranger Belt (http://www.aresgear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=6) at work (carries a G17 w/ X300, 1 Rifle mag, 2 pistol mags, med kit and 1 fragmentation grenade on a daily basis) and the Maxpedition Liger Belt (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=16&gclid=CNGvzq7fxacCFQWFDgodqzbREg) at home (carries G19 w/ X300 and two magazines). Most companies that make leather holster also make leather gun belts. Any reputable company should be able to set you up with something to fit how you dress. I'd advise you to stay away from the simple military style riggers belts (http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Universal-BDU-Belt,95,1384.htm). They tend to be a little too thin to carry a lot of weight comfortably all day.
When I was carrying a 1911 I was using a Tucker Gunleather Texas Heratige (http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/teheiwb.html) and a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 (http://www.miltsparks.com/VM-2.htm). Both kept the pitol very flat and spread the weight across about 6" of belt. Between the two I prefered the Tucker as it was a little slimmer and layed nearly flat when the gun was drawn.
I carry a Compact 1911 (Officer's Model size), and I use a 1.75" Beltster. Works great for me, never had a problem with the pistol being unsecure. And the belt itself is a Belt From Hell. Never seen leather that thick and tough. Helluva product, IMO, but probably not for everyone. Works for this fat old man though. You have to remove the rivets from your jeans though, or they'll mark up the slide.

When I carried a full size 1911 it was with a Milt sparks Watch-6 & a 1.5" Sparks belt.
I'm trying one of the Liger belts on Mick-Boy's recommendation & it works pretty well. They're a lot thinner than a traditional leather belt so you might have to adjust the belt loops/clips on your holster.
I tried a rigger's belt & wasn't all that impressed. That design would probably work well in a tucked-in shirt environment, but the buckle took up too much centerline real estate & would hang up on my shirt, fouling the draw.
My carry gun is an XD 5" tactical .45 with the compact handle. Liberty holsters IWB and wilderness tactical belt. It is a fat bitch but definitely comfy after you get used to it

I occasionally carry a full size 1911 in a Don Hume H721. This is generally when weather or work requires a coat, or as open carry.

I carry a full size kimber tle/rlII in stainless. I use a belt from a&g and a black ops pro plus holster from rocky at purekustom holsters. These are amazing products for carrying a fullsize 1911
I carry a Springer full size lightweight in an Uncle Mikes IWB holster on a normal 1 1/2" leather belt. I've got several expensive leather holsters, but the cheap Uncle Mikes works the best for me.

I just have my people carry my guns for me.

Actually, I carried a full-size Kimber for a long time in a CompTac C-Tac IWB. Worked great after I figured out the correct angle. Carrying IWB really takes the weight off the hips, too.
1911's are for girly men. I carry one of these. Volcanic made in 1855. The 1st lever action in the World.[Coffee]

I carry a P12 in a holster made by nogaroheli on a cowboy belt with no problems, or an xd45 tactical in the same style holster. I used to carry in a smart carry inside the pants holster. It distributed the weight very well but was very slow to draw sitting.

I went and got a nice belt at www.thebeltman.net
VERY nice, Reasonable priced.
I will say this, Belt makes a HUGE Difference in the feel/distribution and security of the carry.
I have a single leather belt before... I couldn't carry a compact+ on that thing anymore.

Here's a shot of a new leather shoulder holster that I had posted for sale in the Firearms Accessories For Sale down in the Trading Post of this site. No one had much interest in it and here I thought there must be damn few of the CCW holders carrying a 1911 or similar BIG shooters. Guess I was wrong - AGAIN.

I use either a Milt Sparks or Galgo Avenger.
Always have a 1.5" belt of quality leather or one of those "instructor" type web belts.
I carry my full size in a Michael Kole holster for concealed. Very comfortable. A sturdy belt is a must though. And I also use a SERPA holster for competition.

I carry a full sized Kimber Super Carry Custom every day in a Crossbreed Supertuck holster. It rides really well, and I am a jeans / t-shirt kinda guy.
BUT.... I now have a hole in every pair of levis I own... just above the back pocket and yes, the barrel loves to show its face outside of that hole now.

I carry a 1911 chambered in .50 GI with a full length dust cover. I tried using an uncle mikes holster but the gun sat up to high and a bit to far away from the body. I fixed the problem with a 1.5" belt and a leather Galco holster. The draw is a little slower, but the pistol sits tight against my hip and I have gotten used to it.

Carry a 1911 Kimber Pro Carry II between 3 an 12:30 (yes just off my boys) in a De'Santis Cozy Partner. Works great for sitting and standing, easily moved with my palm as i stand up or sit down.

Really pretty comfortable, my only complaint is the gun sticks out the bottom a little causing a bunch of extra wear.

I use an IWB Super Tuck from www.crossbreedholsters.com (http://www.crossbreedholsters.com)
I use this holster in fact for all my CCW pistols. XD40 Service, XD45 Tactical & Service, Glock 23, Glock 20, 5" 1911, HK USP 40.
They are great holsters and have held up extremly well. I have worn the 1911 while working as a home remodeling and handyman guy and never batted an eye as to it being on my strong arm side at about 2 o clock to 3 o clock. I have worn shorts with it and NO ONE has ever noticed I carry that way. You will not be disapointed with a Crossbreed Holster of any kind.

I carry a full size springer loaded. Holster is one made by Parker, I found on fleabay for $40, it's a blatant rip off of the Super Tuck, little cheaper made, but has felt on the inside so I find it more comfortable. I have a Super Tuck for my G30 and it's a really nice holster.
For the belt I've got a custom rigger belt, that's a piece of 1.75" webbing folded in half and sandwiched between 2 other pieces it's really stiff, wont stretch, and is adjustable to the exact tightness I want no popping new holes. I like it so much a few months later I had the guy make me a second one for backup if this one ever wears out.
