Tomorrow night Slim Cessna's Auto Club has an album release party at the Gothic in Littleton. http://www.gothictheatre.com/show/detail/38416
I saw them as an opening act a couple of years ago and became a fan. They do some of the best live shows I've ever seen. Some rock, some country with the feel of a revival meeting. For $20 you get way more than your money's worth.
I think they're actually doing an in store appearance at Twist & Shout records in Denver at 6PM tonight.

I find the rockabilly/psycho-billy/psycho-bluegrass stuff is infinitely more enjoyable live than it is on CD/MP3.
In a little club full of people enjoying it (and a few adult beverages) its just tremendously fun ... in the car in traffic or on my media box in the office it gets old fast.

It was a great show. They are a live band and they had the place nuts.
There was an opening act, Michael Dean Damron, kind of country folk who had a great song about the Westboro Baptist Church. Those cockroaches have been discussed in this forum. It consisted of wishes for deeply obscene, painful & humiliating things to be done to them. I totally agreed with the sentiments.

I find the concerts infinitely more enjoyable then most concerts. Strangely enough the people just seem to be more "classy". We essentially on a dare went and saw GWAR, the people there all smoked inside (tobacco and otherwise), infringed as much as possibly on your personal space, and started fights left and right. With "rockabilly/psycho-billy/psycho-bluegrass" the crowd is mellow unless in the pit and if the pit gets to wild a bunch of the big guys walk in the middle and slow it down. Amazing how this effects the experience.
Been to a few in my day, but nothing any more.
Well if you ever decide to partake again let me know we might be at the same one and I will buy you a beer. [Beer]

The Rev Peyton is pretty amazing in concert. He gets a lot out of an acoustic guitar, washbboard & $5 drum set. I don't see Colorado on his current schedule but he is well worth checking out. When he come to Denver he usually plays the Larimer Lounge or the Bluebird.

Wovenhand has more than filled the void of 16 Horsepower. I caught them in January. I do go to a lot of concerts. Live music is great, especially offbeat bands that don't hoover the wallet.
Today my wife & I went to see a free concert of the lead vocalists of the Hollyfelds. Check them out if you can handle alt-country. Their vocals are wonderful and they're good to look at. Local and damned good.
Last night I went to see the Drive by Truckers since the Heartless Bastards were opening. The Bastards were great. I really didn't get the Truckers. They didn't gell for me. I just saw influences. Southern rock bands, John Hiatt and others. I might have liked them more if I was stoned. They seem a stoner band. The whole audience was smoking and my clothes smell like pot. I put away those childish things long ago. Venues probably don't like me. I buy at most a bottle of water.
Steve
I have some Wovenhand and have seen them live. Still like 16hp better, especially the early stuff.

Once upon a time black folk made truly awesome music ... just as Johnson's Great Society destroyed the black family, Hip Hop has destroyed black music.
Anyway, I got this on vinyl somewhere.
Once upon a time cowboy folks made truly awesome music ... country pop has destroyed country music.
or
Once upon a time rebellious folks made truly awesome music ... corporate bean counters have destroyed rock & roll music.

No, rock and roll was created by corporate bean counters and then made great by rebellious kids who grew up to become corporate bean counters that ruined it again.

I'd post links but I'm at work & youtube is blocked.
There's still lots of great music out there. It's just in the clubs, not at Pepsi Center. If you like country, there's lots of people in the alt-country or other fringes doing good stuff. Denver has a good local band, the Hollyfelds who have two women with awesome vocals fronting the band. There's the Railbenders.
In July someone who has made a whole career of being out of the spotlight, Dave Alvin will be at the Soiled Dove. Depending on his mood it could be country, folk, blues, rock, rockabilly or all of the above.
I think the major labels are dead and artists have to make their own way. It's rough for some but it means lots of playing live, merch, social networking and other ways to get noticed.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club is at the Larimer Lounge this weekend. I'll be at the Saturday show, maybe the Sunday BBQ. They go on at 5 or 6 so it is possible for us working folk. They are unbelievable in concert.

Was at their new CD release party last night. A good local band. I guess the style is called alt-country. That means country that doesn't suck.

Christmas Lounge (http://somafm.com/christmas/) Chilled holiday grooves and classic winter lounge tracks. (Kid and Parent safe!)
Christmas Rocks (http://somafm.com/xmasrocks/) Have your self an indie/alternative holiday season!
Xmas in Frisko (http://somafm.com/xmasinfrisko/) SomaFM's wacky and eclectic holiday mix. Not for the easily offended.
Tool, Frank Sinatra and Christmas music!

I went to school to be an audio engineer (studio type) back when I thought I could make some money at it. I maintain I've got a talent for it, but I wasn't willing to starve long enough to prove it. The engineer on this track has great chops. Great sound. I enjoyed it.
I'm not sure why, but it made me want to listen to some Charlie Daniels.
