I have been content shooting my inexpensive SKS (among my hunting weapons) the last 15 yrs and had been holding off on getting into AR's - well the time is about right. I am hoping to liquidate a few other "toys" and start a 243 chambered build on a 308 platform. Something to put the hurtin' on varmints, coyotes and antelope.
I have assessed going either the DPMS compatible route vs. the Armalite compatible route, and as of right now, I intend to go with DPMS compatible components.
Any tips/tricks/pointers are welcome.

Welcome to the forum! Have you thought about the 243 WSSM on a AR-15 platform?? It's a smokin round. [Tooth]

I did consider it, but decided that I wanted the luxury of a wider selection of readily available factory rounds.

first off, welcome!! secondly, why did you choose the DPMS platform as opposed to armalite or LMT, RRA, etc...

Pricing and availablity of the various components. At least that was the DPMS stuff vs Armalite. I did not really look into LMT or RRA (except for briefly looking to find an upper from RRA).

i would maybe look into an LMT i have the Defender 2000 and love it...i've also been looking at getting an RRA as well because the price is right for those and from what i've heard, they're really great! check them out! I was just wondering why DPMS, usually the only reason i see that people get DPMS is because of the name and popularity of them, but some people dont give credit to those that are "less known" even though LMT makes weapons for our own military.

Welcome! Funny I posted something similar to this when I joined! Only I am choosing to go Armalite AR 10(I already have an Armalite M 15 that I'm very happy with).

After a little more digging, I can't rule out Armalite...I have found a few sources for pieces with pricing comparable to what I could put a DPMS together for.

I found an in-stock DMPS 20" heavy barrel complete 243 upper and ordered it. I also ordered 1 CProducts 5 rnd mag and 3 Magpul 20 rnd mags.
Will wait to order the complete lower until I get the shotgun sold....then....let the excitement begin!

SWEET! Received my DMPS upper and mags on Friday. Ordered my Tactical Machining lower with collapsible stock last Monday - it won't be ready for about 3 weeks. Currently researching scoping and mounting options. Also looking at lasers to put on also for CQ targeting.

My end game for sites are: 1) scope for long distance blasting; 2) laser for close quarters; and 3) maybe a tactical light.
The options I've found so far are:
Quad Rail Gas Block

45 degree offset:

Tri-rail to mount on top of the receiver rail:

Anyone have any experience with these different options?

I should also ask what folks have done with free floats for attaching slings.
THis is a great place to be!

For those of you that use your AR's for hunting, what sort of slings do you use? How is the comfort of the 3-point tactical slings for toting around all day?
