China has become such an important market for U.S. entertainment companies that one studio has taken the extraordinary step of digitally altering a film to excise bad guys from the Communist nation lest the leadership in Beijing be offended.

When MGM decided a few years ago to remake "Red Dawn," a 1984 Cold War drama about a bunch of American farm kids repelling a Soviet invasion, the studio needed new villains, since the U.S.S.R. had collapsed in 1991. The producers substituted Chinese aggressors for the Soviets and filmed the movie in Michigan in 2009.

But potential distributors are nervous about becoming associated with the finished film, concerned that doing so would harm their ability to do business with the rising Asian superpower, one of the fastest-growing and potentially most lucrative markets for American movies, not to mention other U.S. products.

As a result, the filmmakers now are digitally erasing Chinese flags and military symbols from "Red Dawn," substituting dialogue and altering the film to depict much of the invading force as being from North Korea, an isolated country where American media companies have no dollars at stake.

The changes illustrate just how much sway China's government has in the global entertainment industry, even without uttering a word of official protest. Although it's unclear if anyone in China has seen "Red Dawn," a leaked version of the script last year resulted in critical editorials in the Global Times, a communist party-controlled paper.

That followed postings of pictures on China's popular Web portals Sina and Tiexue in late 2009 of the "Red Dawn" set showing actors posing as Chinese troops and mock propaganda posters of the U.S. Capitol building smashed by a hammer. The posts received tens of the thousands of views. "When does it come out?" read one Chinese comment. "There is no hope for theatrical screening [censorship], wait for pirated version."

An MGM spokesman said that no one at the studio has had discussions with Chinese government officials about "Red Dawn."

Hollywood has learned the hard way that besmirching China's image on-screen can have long-running implications for the many arms of a modern media conglomerate. In the late 1990s, Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures and MGM all faced a temporary halt in their business dealings in the country after releasing the movies "Kundun," "Seven Years in Tibet" and "Red Corner," respectively, which were critical of the communist government.

Today, China is far more important to the Hollywood studios, despite the government's policy of allowing only about 20 non-Chinese films into theaters each year. In 2010, China was the fifth-biggest box office market outside of the United States, with $1.5 billion in revenue.

So freaking dumb... bowing down to the chicom instead of promoting freedom of speech. Yeah, next thing you know, they'll make a movie on how the Chinese won the WWII single handedly per their school text book.

I guess $1.5B can buy a lot.

Besides...they don't need to invade. They're just buying everything they want.

Hmm. Blockbuster caved to the religious right, in the early '90s, and started editing their movies. That move bit them in the ass. Looks like someone is setting up for another ass bitin'.

As far as the remake of Red Dawn, I have 0 interest in seeing it. Doesn't matter who the enemy is.

This one is BULLSHIT! Who knows those shitty product making fuckers might have liked a movie about them. Its not like the stupid, small town, hicks from the first movie made a difference at the end anyway. Fuck you hollyweird go back to pumping ass because not only am I not going to pay money to watch it, I'm not even going to DL it for free.

I thought it was Cuban troops as part of the whole "communist pack" that came parachuting into school and was the invading force for the area in which the movie takes place. I don't recall it being Chinese...

yeah just checked, no chinese, russian and cuban...

COD4 was plausible...World at War was real. But MW2 and Black Ops is the biggest steaming piles of shit I've ever had the displeasure of being coerced into buying.

The discussion is about the upcoming remake of RD...not the original.

How are the North Koreans supposed to invade us? Did they develop stealth row boats?

Even the non-gamers will probably enjoy the trailer videos, they're very movie-like.

Since they're so skinny from being staved they'll smuggle themselves in flat screen TV boxes. Since my company is in broadcast we have flat screen TV's all over and the Koreans ones have melted down in our environment of never being turned off.

I don't blame the bozos in Hollywood for changing it. The international market often brings in way more money than the US. Even a total pirate country like China could be worth some money. The idea of being invaded by North Koreans just makes the movie sound dumber than a bag of rocks.

I don't think it's totally outta line. The Cubans played a major role in the first movie, backed by the USSR. From what I've read, China still has a role in the invasion, but there'll be more focus on the North Koreans.

I have to confess, I felt the original-cut completely sucked-ass, hated it. Tried to watch 2x as I recall and it just never did it for me. I can only imagine any sequel would be a turd-festival too.

Why use the DPRK as a substitute? Just do "Red Dawn - The Southwest invasion" and base it on illegal imigration. Seems more plausible.

That would piss off too many in THIS country... especially in Hollywood!

my take: Meh, it's a movie... it's not like they're going for realism in the slightest, it's entertainment.

I guess they had to pick one of the "American Haters" out there but choosing North Korea/China over say a Taliban/Iranian foe made more sense? The original was very plausible because the tension and threat was real at the time. Taking a different angle and telling the story of a ground attack when everyone assumed it would be nuclear was genius IMO. Accompany that with some good up and coming acting talent and you have an entertaining movie. That genuine fear factor can not be reproduced with today's foe (especially N. Korea) and is why I think the remake will likely fail. But I like blood, guts and kicking ass so I'll probably watch it![Bang]

I think part of the reason for this silliness is that MGM WANTS this film to fail because it doesn't reinforce leftist dogma.

Also, just how much of Hollywood is owned by China these days?

How about making Walmart the evil aggressor? Oh wait, that would be the Chinese too. Plus they already are evil aggressors.

I doubt MGM is going to drop a few mil. on a movie and then want it to fail. They are in the business to make. Political statements are secondary.

The original didn't completely suck -- Patrick Swayze's character was a bit much but Powers Boothe was pretty good as the downed pilot and any film with Lea Thompson was good by me back then.

At least the concept of Russia trying a land invasion to get the resources they needed to feed their people wasn't totally laughable back then but the idea that North Korea could invade anything further than 100 km from their border is just comedic. Remaking the film seemed stupid to me but these cosmetic changes are dumber than dirt.

That is an interesting social commentary on where we are today. Back when the original was done, it was the cold war period. Not that a soviet invasion was likely but one could almost see that.

In today's political climate I just don't see any major threat in that same manner. China wouldn't invade. We already owe them alot. It would actually be counter-productive to them to do so.

Space aliens? Been done and still being done... Maybe it just doesn't need to be rebooted...

The story would have been better if they kept it with the Cuban's and the under ground secret soviet old guard that was in control of Russia's oil wealth.....

Its about money. If they could make equal or more leaving it as it was filmed, you don't think they wouldnt?

Its always about money.
