View Full Version : Auto knives in Denver area?
Anybody know of any places that sell decent quality auto knives (switchblades) in the Denver or South Metro areas? I have to open a lot of boxes and like being able to open my knife one-handed. I've worn out a couple of small cheapos, so I'd like to find a good quality mid-sized auto or assisted opener that won't fall apart and will hold a decent edge. Thanks!
I'd advise getting either a small fixed blade or a one-handed opener like a spyderco instead.
Quality automatics cost as much as a decent .380 pistol, unless you want something like a Benchmade side-opener or a Mikov.
Seem hard to find to me, mostly because the auto knives are illegal to carry here. Assisted sure, but not auto! I like them but agree you have to spend a few bucks to get a quality auto.

I really like my kershaw assist open. I open one handed very easily and carry to work. Decent prices too

I got a SOG-TAC when they first came out. They overplay the "tactical" bullshit on their site but its a good knife. Built well, durable. Smooth action and blade locks up nice and tight. Has a safety so you can lock it in the closed position and can't accidentally open it. IIRC I got it for a little over $100.

Here's one for a decent price...

They came out with a new recurve-style blade since I got mine that I like a little better (I've found that shape is more practical... cuts better than a flat edge), might end up getting it sometime in the future.

If you're just opening boxes with it, Just go to HD, They have a folding utility razor knife. Opens easily with one hand, and you don't have to worry about sharpening it, Just flip/replace the blade when needed.
I've had one for 7-8 years now, it's tough enough to strip the insulation off 750mcm wire. opens quickly, and has a strong lock.
Just make sure it's the Huskey brand from HD, the one Lowes has, is a piece of junk.

+1 When I worked in a warehouse, the amount of boxes and adhesive can really ruin a good knife. The Husky box cutters do their job well and keep your nice assisted open blade nice.
The best advice I can give you is to go to Walmart (I know) and buy the Kershaw Tanto Blur which is an all black knife. It's now priced at $49.99 which is a STEAL for what you get. It's assisted open so it's perfectly legal but it might as well be an automatic. It's a Ken Onion SafeOpen knife and it's awesome! I paid $70 back before they went on sale and I feel that even at $70 you would be hard pressed to beat it anything under $100. Plus it's Walmart so I'm not going to go into detail but we all know how lenient their return policy is. That's all I'm going to say on that. [Beer]
Buy one and try it out. You won't be disappointed.
I have had good luck with Benchmade Axis locks set-up for one hand open and closing. The spring assists, I have tried, work great to open but require two hands to reset the spring when closing.

Thanks all! This here sounds like the most attractive option to me.

Here's what you're looking for in a gray/red package:

Now that I see the pic of that Kershaw, I strongly recommend DO NOT waste your money on it. The skateboard grip tape like handles are rough and not comfortable to grip, the blade doesn't hold an edge well at all, the serrations are too pronounced and will catch on rope and such instead of cutting through it, and the spring mechanism in mine broke after 4 months or so. I wouldn't buy that knife again for anything.

did you buy it at wal mart?
prices there are cheaper for a reason.
I love my kershaws.
but then, everything is subjective. some folks swear by crkt, the two I had were crap.

We're not talking about the same knife. It's not skateboard tape at all. It's a rubbery texture that is probably my favorite knife grip. The blade is of great quality & holds the edge just fine. As for the mechanism itself I'll let you ask my wife how many times she thinks I've opened/closed it. I bet she says millions. I sit for hours and flip it open & close it and the assisted mechanism is the same tension as when it was new. I & several of my friends have been using & abusing this exact knife w/o issue. We've tried getting them to fail and no luck. With Walmart's return policy you can't lose.

I promise, we're talking about the exact same knife. I had mine years ago, so they may have improved their quality since then, but mine was crap.
I use an AUTO pistol with a mini bandolier.
