What is the cheapest, legal way to convert my ar-15 to full auto of select fire, and how much would be a reasonable estimate for price?

I would just bump fire. That only cost you the price of the ammo and gun.

it all depends on the market, but i have heard $10,000 + for an sear $16-20,000 for an M-16

That'd be pretty damn cheap too. Usually the host gun itself is relatively insignificant in cost without the registered FA parts.

Then Cheat... Try one of these-

A Lightning Link would likely be the cheapest. Second cheapest would be a RDIAS.

I think i saw a lightning link a while back for less then 10k maybe like 7, cheapest but far from the best

You'll be in the neighborhood of 8-10k for a lightning link or RDIAS, occasionally you'll find some M16 variant (usually oly's or frankfords) under 10k, colts go for a little bit more- most I've seen lately are 12-14k. Converting your AR15 to an M16 has been illegal since May 1986, unless you're a manufacturer. Even then, by doing so you'd be making the weapon illegal to own except by gov't/LE/dealer (as a post may sample to demo to LE/gov't agencies). Hope it helps.

RDIAS typically goes for more than a converted receiver, but not as much as real M16.

RDIAS is nice as if you have catastrophic failure, you can pick the RDIAS out of the rubble and install in new host gun and you are good to go. You blow up a registered receiver and there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

"Cheap" receiver conversions are going for between 8500 - 11000 right now.
RDIAS around 10000 - 12000
M16 receivers are 10000 and up.

Not sure on Lightning Links as I am not in the market for those...

Damn ridiculous pricing...

I have a sear out of an M4 at home in colorado.
its 3 round burst
and im pretty sure i can get more of them.

You do realize that possession of an unregistered auto sear by an unauthorized person is a felony, right?[Bang]

Get the right MOS in the military and during the time of service you can possess them. I.E armorer

So join the military as an armorer so you can sit there and touch FA sears that don't really do anyone good? No thank you.

I don't know about the Marines but I heard in the Army that anyone with a Class IX can order handfuls of them. It's not a controlled item.

I wonder how much it costs to become a Class 2 SOT?

Keeping in mind that will only work if you're actually going to go into business manufacturing NFA items.

we should just get the law changed so that it was legal to possess without too much crap to go through...

Depending on the amount (in dollars) of firearms made, $1650-$3150 for a three year period. SOT tax is payed yearly and Title 1 manufacturer's FFL is for a 3 year period.

This information is old, so it may be incorrect but it gives you an idea.

Uhm, not quite. Possession of an AR15 and a sear could be seen as intent to manufacture.
But the sears themselves are not controlled. Ever bought an AK 'kit'?
