Fiance' and I are looking at beds and thinking between something like a Tempur-Pedic or a Sleep Number (or similar style air bed that they have at Denver Mattress Company). Any thoughts? Anyone have any of these beds? Any issues with them if you do?

Thanks

Go with the Tempur-Pedic, your back will thank you.
And after the first night, you will wonder how you ever survived the night without one.

Once or twice a year, the wife and I stay over at a cousins place in K.C. while driving between Colorado to Illinois. Their guest bedroom has the bed equipped with the Tempur-Pedic mattress. Very nice and relaxing but I about passed out when I found out the prices of the Tempur-Pedic. I'd like to have one too but wow, kinda expensive and I feel that they are just a little too warm/hot for me. Been married for 50 years and in that amount of time have had only two different mattresses - gee, now I realize why it kinda sags toward the middle -- makes it much easier to meet in the middle. [Tooth]
Both mattresses have always worked for both of us = three kids. I guess we are about due for a new mattress change too.

My wife and I found a tempur-pedic type mattress at American Furniture Warehouse. We absolutely love it! They have two different thicknesses of mattress so try them both. I think it was around $600 for the mattress and boxsprings (king sized) which beats the hell out of a tempur-pedic!

Did this drill ~2 years ago...a purchase that will drive ya' nuts if you do it right.

Huge temper-pedic fan, lady would NOT go for it...stale-mate. We both liked the the high-end Sleep Number a whole lot (forget which line/model) but when I priced it out and all was said and done, I would not go for it...stale-mate. Ended-up with an Origins (soy foam, blah...blah...blah) from International Bedding. Been a great bed so far, I like it a lot but only time will tell. One thing I've learned though, "life is way too short to have a shitty bed!"

PS - Bought the frame yet? That's another pain-in-the-ass... [Tooth]

Had the same sleep number bed for over 12 years now. If you ever moved a tempur-leadic before, you will get the sleep number. It all breaks down into a couple of nice light boxes. Get the comfort top for it and give it a week to get used to it. If the wife and I ever split, the bed is what we will shed blood over.

KevDen2005

I definitely agree that the tempur pedic is pricey. Right now Denver Mattress Company is offering 0% financing on all beds. The Tempur Pedic is the same price at other stores I looked at as well, so it isn't jacked up on price.

Have not got the frame for any bed yet, was gonna go with a simple metal frame until after my wedding in 3 months, which I also convinced the sales guy to throw in if I bought it (I know they are cheap, but why add insult to injury).

For those that have an air bed has anyone ever had a problem with them? What are the warranties like? And if you have had any problems, how much did it cost to fix them?

Agreed. Been married for 21 years and cant count the amount of mattress's we have been through. Seemed like we were spending $800-900 every 3 or 4 years, they would all eventually sag. Decided to spend a few more bucks and get the Tempur-Pedic and have been very happy, going 10 years on the thing and love it. Like its been said before, life is way to short for a shitty bed, and our backs aren't getting any younger. Just do it!! Another thing to consider is your weight, if you packing a few extra pounds your going to have to think about bed longevity. Fortunately the wife and I stay pretty active so were height / weight proportional...For now.[Tooth]

My wife and I haver had a sleep by # for the last 15 years. The biggest draw back is a 6-7 inch wide firm foam barrier between the 2 mattresses. It makes suggling in the middle uncomfortable as her side is 30 and mine is 90. My side has developed a leak and the warranty is pro rated and useless. We bought the high end bed with all the add ons. Would't do it again. Good luck on finding a bed!

Congrats on the pending nuptials. I'm 6" 250lbs and have always had problems not waking with a sore back. About a year ago my wife and I splurged for a Sleep Science Memory Foam King from Costco. Came with a lifetime guarantee, delivered and set up cost just over $1000. I like to sleep on the edge of the bed and it has this edge support system that makes it feel great. I really love this bed, absolutely the best I've ever owned. The frame is metal so for about 2 months it creaked all the time so be aware. I'd say that for marital relations it's interesting at best. So we kept our old bed in the guest room (guess the secret is out) for that. We did try the TempurPedic at the store, but it was 3 to 4 times the price of the Costco knockoff. Haven't had a backache since we made the switch.

The cheap memory foams get hot, since there is no air circulation in them, so be careful with those. The more expensive ones like the Tempur do some open cell or channels or something, but it definitely keeps it cool enough so that I don't notice the difference between them and a normal mattress.

We got a Tempur Pedic last year after using a Sleep Number type bed for nine years. We went with the cheaper basic mattress and kind of regret it. It doesn't seem thick enough. There's a definite break in period where the bed starts out hard and gets more responsive over time. Heat isn't an issue.

Biggest problem we had was with the "box" foundation that came with it. It's broken now and I really did not want another one like it. So, skip the foundation the store will try to sell you and head over to AFW. Their Genius Frame is cheaper and bomb proof.

ok, this thread comes at a good time. we bought our denver mattress $300 queen set 8 years ago. it sucks. it allways sucked.

so we are looking for a set.
those of you who have a king, do you like it? better than a queen?

anybody have an adjustable bed? i was looking online at AFW king memory foam adjustable. I have alot of GERD problems. My doctor allways says lying with your head elevated would alleviate some symptoms.

anyone have an adjustable bed and like it or dislike it? if you have one do you use it? or did the novelty wear off? any help would be great.

and memory foam seems to be it. i have bad shoulders, bad knees, bad back, bad neck, bad hips. or at least they feel bad at the end of the day. but, i am only 180 so my weight isnt the issue.

Oh yeah, now that you've already purchased it, I forgot to tell you about the only problem I have with ours. On my side of the bed only, the sheet at the top corner always pulls off, so in the morning, the bare mattress is showing. Drives me crazy. I don't know if it has anything to do with the sagging frame or not, since my side of the bed is also the side with the broken, sagging, box spring.

We've had this bed at two different locations, and I don't think it did it at the last place we lived at. I think it has to do with the saggy box spring, even though it sags at the opposite end. I need to hurry up and pay my cousin to make me a base with drawers in it. Then I could take all my sock/underwear drawers out of my closet and put my reloading stuff in there. Box springs are such a waste of space.

Agreed, it seems that I am always looking for a better way to store things and always trying to make the best use of space. Drawers under the bed woud be a nice touch.

None-the-less I am really looking forward to getting this bed. I have had the same crappy mattress for eight years that I bought from IKEA when I was stationed back east. It seems like everytime I want to buy a new bed something comes up. I wanted to wait until the wedding in July to buy another bed but my back is killing me and my fiance's neck is always hurting so it was time to get it.

A little late but;

I loved the tempur pedic for the first week. After that we both grew to hate it. Actually traded back to my old cheap mattress after a year. She complained of her hips hurting and my lower back didn't like it.

We also had the stupid sheet pulling off thing irving has though it's got nothing to do with the box spring (ours sat on a storage compartment).

We've slept on a friends sleep number and both really liked it.

I learned something invaluable about the 'king' sized bed this past winter.. there is no 'standard' for the size. Dimensions vary from mfg to mfg.. While the other size mattresses vary in depth, the king varies in all dimensions.

My friends bought a king sized frame.. they then went through 3 mattresses before finding one that fit and did not leave them with a gap, or the bed falling out of the frame. It was only a matter of inches either way but it still either left the metal frame exposed or the mattress was hanging over.

I don't know what size you guys have for your mattress where the corners pull up, but that would be my guess if it's a king. It's a matter of finding the correct fitting sheets. I've had a few sets of sheets do that on mine, I think it's a fit issue..usually a wash in hot water, then nuking them in the dryer seemed to shrink them just enough.

Just an idea.

ChadAmberg
03-28-2011, 09:57
I haven't had any problems with the sheets on the tempurpedics, all the ones we've bought were great, even the mattress pads.

But one thing you do need to know about the beds is the stink for the first couple days. They are sealed in plastic when they get there, and need to outgas for a couple days.

What I did was simply leave the bedroom windows open with the bed fully exposed, and every hour or two go in and walk all over the bed, roll on it, etc. You want to squeeze out the fumes (they're safe but stinky) and then let fresh air fill the bed. Think of squeezing out a sponge. It did take a couple days. I honestly think that if the delivery truck had a giant "squeeze roller" on it for when they deliver the bed that would do the whole bed at once, it wouldn't be a problem. But the first couple nights we couldn't sleep on it, just too powerful.

I do apologize for not remembering that part and letting you know ahead of time, but I did forget all about it now that it has worked great for us for several years.

No worries you will love it, however, 2 points owners will not argue with.

1. The mattress will take on the temp of the room. In the winter if you room stays cool, it will be a bit firm when you first jump in. Summer it will be softer.

Good point about the size of a king mattress. We have two box springs under ours, that are supposed to be for a king. There is always a side where the box spring sticks out 2-3 inches. Very irritating. One day I measured the bed to see which side was longest, and it is almost exactly a square.

congrats on the purchase. . .

give it a few nights to get use to it. The bed feels "hard" and I woke up sore for the first few nights. after that it was awesome.

here's a warning though. . . .if you travel a lot (I use to) when you get back to your bed, the first night's sleep is horrible while your body gets use to sleeping on it again. Day two was back to a great nights sleep.

we've had ours for 6 years....best money we've spent

oh, and to keep the sheets on, they sell a "suspender" type thing that goes under the mattress and attaches to the fitted sheet. IIRC it was like $10 and it keeps the sheets from moving

So what you're saying is.. you'd deprive a fat kid his right to enter your dwelling uninvited just because he wanted a sammich that you should provide, he was staring in your window when he became hungry... What is wrong with people these days.. deprive a man of a sammich!

Over the past few posts I just read I have to admit that I have no idea where this thread went...

But wanted to report that the bed has been delivered and set up. I have spent the last few hours sitting lying in it, watching movies on my computer and posting on this site. It is awesomely comfortable. I left it uncovered and the windows open all day and the smell decreased a lot. Got up to get some water and the dog that has severe attachment disorders and follows me everywhere didn't even know I left.

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate all your help. I will report further after a few nights sleep.

Kev,

I asked my wife about how she solved the sheet situation (the corners coming up) and she said that you have to look at the package. If there is no notation about the thickness of the mattress then it's for a standard 9" mattress. Ours is 15"(I think) so she just made sure it's noted on the package.

Totally forgot about the "new bed" smell until you mentioned it. Just take the sheets off during the day for a week and let the bed "out-gas"

Sort of a Sarcastic title really.

Too bad we don't have a "Derailed Thread" count

One of my friends (when I was going to UCD) took a few more polysci classes than I did. He told me that one of his teachers made it a requirement to attend some BS liberal circle jerk protest. My buddy called him out and said that the teacher was just using his class to put bodies at the protest and refused to go. Has anyone tried any BS like that with you yet?

This thread has been derailed again...

But no, I have been very fortunate thus far and I am now starting my senrior year(s). I haven't had to do anything like that. In fact I have a few liberal teachers but I posted before about one of them liking using me in the class to help perpetuate good class discussion to view things from all sides. My favorite teachers have been the ones that I can not tell what they are (but believe them to be more conservative because of a few comments they have made).

I would refuse to do anything like your buddy was required to do as well. Furthermore, when I was taking a class last semester, the professor was sick and a professor from the same department came in to talk. I was so pissed off at the end of her lecture that I vowed to get her in trouble at the school...of course it has gone no where

You already got your bed though.

Thanks for the response.

I noticed the other day that our mattress is indeed about 15" thick, and that is probably why the sheets come up.

Fiance' and I are looking at beds and thinking between something like a Tempur-Pedic or a Sleep Number (or similar style air bed that they have at Denver Mattress Company). Any thoughts? Anyone have any of these beds? Any issues with them if you do?

Thanks

I have 2 of the Denver Mattress beds (fancy pillow top models) 1 is mine, a king, the other is the guest bed, a queen. (patrick0685 has slept in the queen, he didnt complain).

I once tried a temper-pedic and hated it. To me it wasnt comfy at all. Maybe that is just me though.

if you are spending so little time in your bed that you are "Not really sure how she feels." You are definitely doing something wrong...
try some mental distraction exercises, maybe some tantra classes.
