View Full Version : Who is John Galt?
The classic book "Atlas Shrugged" has been made into a movie. If you're not familiar with the book, it's a novel written in 1957 about rampant socialism and the final result. It's eerily prophetic of the situation today. It's one of the most inspiring and enlightening books I've ever read.
It's just been made into a film, but (no surprise here) it's an independent film. No way the weenies in Hollywood would ever touch a story this powerful. If you'd like to see it in a theater in your area, you have to go to the website and request it. It took me 1 minute.

Seriously, it's important. If you value your freedom and the American dream, you owe it to yourself to read the book or see the film.

The movie, "The Fountainhead" was also an Ayn Rand story. A movie with Gary Cooper about intellectual rights and personal integrity. Made in the late 1950s, I believe, before Hollywood was in the business of making movies explaining how EVIL our nation is.

Ironic that it is showing in Boulder, but not Colorado Springs. Go figure...
Tim, thanks for the heads up. I just reread (listened) to Atlas Shrugged last month. Very interesting concepts developed in the story. I'm not really a fan of her writing style but whole heartedly agree with her conclusions regarding socialism and the nature of individuals and capitalist incentive.

I am John Gault.
The previews I've watched for movie Atlas Shrugged Part One looked to be very different from the book. Independent studios can screw up things just as easily as the major studios can. I was totally discouraged from seeing the movie.
The other thing is I can't stand multi part stories. I want see it all at the same time.
I'll wait for the disc's.

The book is in three parts ... three LONG parts. I can't see how the entire thing could have been done in a single 2 or even 3 hour movie.
$10 says they leave Galt's speech out of it.

I believe much of this was filmed locally. A friend of mine had a very minor (just above extra and still unpaid) part that was filmed in Canon City. The guy that owns the rights has owned them since the early ninety's and has been "waiting for the right time to make the movie."
Thanks for the post Tim.

That is perfect. You know they picked that date on purpose.
If you havent read the book yet do yourself a favor and get on it before you see the show.
I'm certain they won't leave the speech out, but sweet jesus I hope they truncate it. 30+ pages of repeating the same thing? Oy.
H.
I saw a "Who is John Galt?" Bumper sticker today on the way to my second job.

I was thinking the very same thing. Sad.

The $10 says they leave Galt's speech out of it.
That was long enough to be an entire 2 hour movie in and of itself.

So, there was apparently enough of a demand to get this shown in Colo Spr that they have/had it at the Cinemark Tinseltown theater and I caught the 9:55 showing Saturday night.
Let me start with: overall, I liked it.
But, they left out so much critical stuff that if you havben't read the book, you will NOT understand ANYTHING going on in the movie at all.
Most of the casting was okay, but there were a couple of characters I wish they had chosen other actors to portray the roles.
They had several events out of order from the books chronology and they chose to use 2016/2017 as the timeline for this movie which really doesn't play to well with some of the aspects of the story.
There were probably only about 2 - 3 dozen people in the theater for the 9:55 showing.
What I found interesting, yet not unexpected, is that there were only a few individuals under what I would guess would be 30 years old and they were youth that were there with their folks. This movie isn't action packed enough or dumbed down enough to attract the teens and it's too far removed from the liberal brain-washing that most of our 20-somethings have received in schools for them to enjoy it.
If you get a chance, go see it - especially if you've ever read the book.
NPR seemed to give it a good review. Apparently, the guy with the movie rights has had them for a while, but he was just waiting for the right time. Movie studios kept backing out on him (like what happens in the book apparently), so eventually, he just financed it himself.
But, they left out so much critical stuff that if you havben't read the book, you will NOT understand ANYTHING going on in the movie at all.
I respectfully disagree. I think they did a decent job. When one knows a book it is hard to see the movie through the eyes of someone that doesn't.
If you are not familiar with the book please don't be dissuaded from seeing the movie .. you'll get it. Then maybe you'll want to read the book.
Freedom is a powerful idea. Hard work though.
This movie needs to be supported.
