View Full Version : Gauging interest- Carbine class for a bag of trash?
There has been a lot of grumbling about trash at some of our public shooting sights, so I had an idea but it would need some involvement.
I was thinking of organizing events at some of the shooting sites this sites members use frequently- Cleaning events aren’t tempting, but why not have some fun while we are at it?
Basically, a class or contest held at these shooting sites, with admission being a bag of trash being hauled out. We could try to get some instructors. I know this site has more than a few that would be qualified to at the very least coach a few drills. Maybe do a changing venue. One month, carbine class, next month, pistols, next month, long range rifles. If we can’t get people to teach maybe just a small multi gun match that month. Whatever skills we have kind of idea. I know there are also more than a few industry partners that are very qualified to teach, or have teachers on payroll that we could contact about a class. If needed maybe throw a few bucks on top of the trash bag to help compensate the instructor for gas/ammo. We could also rotate sites to keep several clean and get the whole states members involved, it seems like there are dumps everywhere.
We could also probably organize some informal prize matches, a pay it forward type admission and the winner takes the prize? Might be a bunch of parts for a gun they don't own or a $100 but, might make it interesting. I was thinking keep it informal, but interesting enough to draw people.
I was thinking we contact the forest service about this if we get it going, just to let them know there are people who value these ranges and are trying to keep them clean. May even get some help, a truck or dumpster would go a long way if we get serious enough.
What say you?
I figure I will let this sit for a day or so and see what kind of involvement we can get.

I would be up for this. I always pack out a pick-up truck load of trash from Pawnee grasslands when I go shooting. Stupid punks and bangers checking out their 9mm gats on old TVs and junk pisses me off.
id be down for this idea . I know id kick in some time cleaning and maybe even a few bucks for some helpful hints and tips or any help to be a better shot . Hell i might even donate some military surplus (for a prize ect.) to this cause . Ill gladly fill my truck with brass and spent shells .
If we can get instructors and say at least 4-6 hours of instruction, this would be great all around. We could swarm into a site early in the morning, take over our area, do a first pass clean up and then a post class cleaning.
I'd be in..

I am totally in.
I Can haul out and dispose of extras if someone can pick up but not haul out.
I have a truck and access to dumpsters.
spleify nailed it in the other thread with this;
The problem is NOT the members on this site, so while these threads and rants help us release some stress it falls on deaf ears, because the folks here are the responsible ones who DO take care of the shooting sights and clean up after themselves. Its the "weekend warriors" who shoot a few times a year and go and trash a sight and then just leave. Its very disheartening, because we know "they" are just gonna keep shutting these sights down, and then where will we be????
Maybe I'm a little naive, but I would like to if someone is a member here, they wouldn't need a carrot on a stick to clean up whenever they go shooting. They would just do it. Because after all, it is in the club rules.[Tooth]
When I first get down to the south site, I take a walk around with Dozer and fill up a couple of trash bags before we even get started setting up.
Heck, one of the last times I went up to the old north site, I did the same thing. What did I get for my trouble, some jackass starts shooting in my direction while I was down range.
If you guys want to do it, go for it. But, my guess would be for the most part, A participating member of this website, is not the ones taking the tv's microwaves, and general household junk out and leaving it.

I agree with you, I have a feeling no one who attends an event like this, or keeps garbage bags in their shooting kit is likely to leave a TV. But my worry is that if we don't do something about it, we are just going to keep loosing sites.
I see the advantage of organizing this as two part. First, impact, a guy with a trash bag can clean up, but the impact is minor compared to what people leave. And second, that if we organize we can maybe get the forest service on board, and at least noticing that people care about our sport, and the forest, and are willing to help out.
Sadly, natural selection isn't purging the idiots from society very fast and I can't think of a way to keep them from acting like, well, idiots. The sign and trash can idea I mentioned would almost certainly just be used as targets too. At the same time, I don't want to lose things I like because they act like children.

If you could arrange for the local authority to have a dumpster nearby would be even better. Have a range cleaning / fun shoot day. that way the folks that show up driving their civics would not have an excuse to not pick up trash and haul it off.
and those of us with pickup trucks are not stuck hauling a full load of garbage back to the metro area and searching for a dumpster to unlaod into.
Count me in. I've got a truck and will haul trash out. LMK when this happens[Beer]

Might coordinate with DOW/Parks and get a dumpster.
I dont mind hauling extras out (3-4 Bags)
But I am pretty sure the Apartment managers would shit if I Start dumping shot up washers and dryers in there.
If it is the south site, The Ranger station is just a few miles down the road.
In the past they have had no problem with us leaving the trash bags in their dumpster.

I'm in, lets make this happen.
I was planning on letting this sit, but it looks like we have more than enough interest to really get this started.
I will give the Buffalo Creek station a call tomorrow just to see if we can work with them and if they have any special requests, etc.
As to what it seems like so far-
-Sunday-(sorry Opie, maybe next month will be Saturday) not sure which one yet, but I've heard that day more than once. May aim for a few weeks to a month out, just to make sure we can all clear up our day to get there.
-South site, lets the folks from the Springs make it too, and its one of the sites...sites. We could organize some car pool type things from the metro areas to save us all gas and not have 15 F-350s and a dumpster parked on a 25 yard range.
As to class or what we are up to when not cleaning trash, I am all ears.
Unless you all want to hear my opinions about sexy looking rifles and how to miss, fast, we run some drills, burn up a bunch of ammo, try out some other weapons, and eat some home made BBQ sauce -this sealed it for me-
I think an AR carbine type day may be how we start, after all, this is CO-ar15.com. But I have nothing wrong with other weapon systems, if you feel an ax suits you, rock on. But the south site is short, so precision rigs are out unless you want to hike or DESTROY flies with a 338 Lapua. maybe next time we head to Pawnee and try out some scopes.
I don't know if any instructors/industry partners/people who know what they are doing, are out there reading this, but if you are, and you would be interested, feel free to shoot me a PM and we can talk about what you need/want and what you think would be good for this kind of mess. I am not looking for making a Magpul Dynamics video, and I don't think any of us are expecting that kind of experience, so no pressure.
If any of you would like to see something else out of this, say so, I am game for pretty much anything, just want to have a great day shooting and keep our sites open. I know we can't have a gun show up there, so big time gun swapping is out, but if you want to talk about gear, industry partner looking to hype your store/product, or a new coach looking to hone your teaching style, I think it is all good.
I have a hunch we may collect a ton of brass, if we get a lot, may want to come up with a web site collection for cheapish reloaded ammo? Send it off to Bullet boy if it looks good?
I have a couple pieces of steel as well, they are ugly, but they still take a bullet like a champ, that I can bring on up too. As well as a few target stands.
Last bit, I mentioned this to my wife and she may want to come, so its only reasonable that you open the invite to wives, kids, friends, dogs with thumbs, but leave your washing machine at home.
I would be up for something like this up at Pawnee. I've never been to the south sight as it is pretty far from me.
Let me know if another one of these is gonna happen up north and I am in for sure. This is a great idea!
Actually on second thought, maybe if I could hitch a ride with someone I would be down for this!!

I'm in, depending on day and location. I have a Jeep, but it'll still hold a few bags of crap.
When I went to clean up Pawnee, a local sheriff stopped by and said to let them know the next time people wanted to go clean up, and they'd see if they could get a roll out dumpster up there for us.

If its on a day I can make it, and you're willing to help me out a little with fuel (don't need to pitch a whole lot but $4/gal diesel @ 12mpg sucks), I can fit 3 passengers in my truck from the Centennial area.

I'm in for it - depending on all the usual stuff. Right now I'm not walking well but tomorrow my doc will stick all sorts of needles into me to help. I do have a truck so have room to haul stuff. I just wish there was a way to reach the bums who trash the ranges but I doubt if they are on this forum.
Steve
I contacted the Forest Service, spoke with a very nice woman.
Word is the South site is one of the worst they have and they would love some help to get it clean.
We have a contact person for the Pike National Forest for these events and she is willing to help us out in the future as well.
Also, we are welcome to use the Dumpsters at the Buffalo Creek work station, she just recommended we let them know first so they can expect a lot of trash and don't assume we are just cleaning out our meth labs!
So all is a go as far as the serious part.
Next up, I am going to try to pick a date and get a few requests as to the shooting we do and a good idea of the numbers in case we would like to organize something like a class or match.
Video for inspiration- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcT1mw0i4fE) If you would like to do something, say the word and we can get it rolling.
Also give someone a chance to start brewing up some BBQ sauce, seriously, I'll be waiting. If anyone has any date requests, throw it out there and we can pick a date. Sundays are looking like the winner.
I'm going to try to organize some car pooling and pick up spots. I have room for two out of Westminster. I was thinking if we could get a few in the Denver area, a spot in the springs and a spot up north if enough of you are interested. Please be kind and willing to throw your driver a couple bucks or a box of ammo. A Pawnee day is in our future, I shoot there too.
Thanks for all the support guys, I hope this goes a long way to keeping our sites open.

I suppose this is in response to my comment about making some homemade BBQ sauce? Lol I guess I kinda have to go now.
As for the alcohol content..... I do use a large amount of Jack D in my sauce, although I generally cook most of the alcohol out of it. I've been known to leave a good amount of alcohol in there for BBQ's at my buddy's ranch, but seeing as there will be lots of us there and we'll all be armed, I think I'll just go ahead and cook all of it out of there [Tooth]
Why don't we have a big potluck-style BBQ? I'll make the sauce and (depending on how many people are coming, aka how much sauce I need to make) maybe bring some paper plates and such too. Someone else can bring a half-dozen or so packs of hot dogs, another can bring a few 2 liter bottles of whatever, etc. If yall are down for this let's get a list going.

If enough people are going and are in the south denver metro area I might be able to get a 11 person full size van and take me plus 7 people and just use the back seat and back area for gear and trash hauling. but since the van gets about 14mpg a few bucks or a box of ammo if you can spare would be helpful.

I'd be up for something depending on driving distance from the Springs. I just checked out most of the local shooting spots last weekend and this weekend....most are trashed. Next time around I'm going to spend a few hours picking up peoples junk...didn't have any bags this time. My normal shooting spot near Tarryall Reservior is still pristine, but I don't think many people know about it.
