View Full Version : Gov't Shutdown: Will it really affect you?
Bailey Guns

Personally, I'm not too concerned about the possibility of a gov't shutdown by the end of the week.
It's really not going to affect me at all. It's my understanding that essential services will continue to function as normal. Some entitlement programs may be affected. SS and Medicare/Medicaid will still be available though new applications may be delayed by a shutdown.
So I'm curious if I'm missing something. Is this a big deal or is it simply political posturing by both sides.
And I'm ashamed to admit that I actually agree with Obama about the need to get this thing resolved and avoid another stopgap, temporary spending measure.
Owch...that hurt. I think I need a bandaid.

i hate to sound like the welfare leach, but as long as my VA check comes, i dont care.
I don't think you'd qualify as a "welfare leach" for that. I'm pretty sure you earned your VA benefits.
As I understand it, scheduled payments wouldn't be affected in the short term.

Well they also expect the military to show up even if we don't get paid. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I'm leaning toward um....no.
Maybe we should call in the "replacements".
I remember the last time this happened, when Slick Willy was in the White House. I didn't notice any changes, nor did millions of other working Americans. Except there was a little less traffic for my morning commute.
If the 800,000 .gov employees affected are "non essential", why the F*** are they collecting a paycheck in the first place? [Peep]

gov shut down ?? got a link to some info ?
It's been the lead news story for about a week or so.
www.foxnews.com
read it and wow !! not that im real keen in obama or anything but he is right in some ways(did i just say that ??).On some level this might be just the spark to bring Thomas Jefferson's next revolution . But then i think about the last time united states went to war with the federal gov and we all know how well that went .
when its all said and done im not really informed (one fox article makes me no expert )
id like to see where this heads and how it will affect our troops and gov over seas .
so if the fed gov gets shut down does that mean we can have full auto guns again ?
Bailey Guns
04-06-2011, 10:12
That's kinda the point...does a fed shutdown really mean anything? It's not like there won't be air traffic controllers not showing up, the military doesn't just pack up and go home, etc... It basically means most entitlement programs are temporarily not funded and some non-essential gov't services stop. Congress still has to show up...don't know if that's good or bad.

We have been in this same spot several times in my lifetime that I remember.
I don't remember any actual consequences to it. as far as our muslim leader's opinion of what needs to be done, his spending habits since taking office are a big part, if not the biggest part, of the issue.
the fact that he now thinks we need to do something to keep the BS moving down the pipe is falling on deaf ears as far as I am concerned.
maybe when the gov't shuts down he will get the message that his check book does actually have a spending limit and he has an overdrawn account.
I am sure that he inherited the problem
question is will his paycheck also be placed on hold
hide and watch on this one.
Considering the stock market hasn't shown any freak out, I think it will all be ok. Nothing really happened the last time this came about anyway so no big worry.

Generally speaking any non essential functions will be shut down. IRS will close, but if you filed electronically and are getting your refund electronically that should still go through. Military will still earn a paycheck, but you might not actually get paid (much like anyone furloughed). I'd guess most social security, va, etc would still go thorugh as they are automated payments. Haven't heard about DFAS but if the payment is scheduled, it'll probably go through. If not, there may be a delay.
Government shutdown won't matter to me, the government already doesn't do what it is supposed to do.
Let's define essential services:
Essential:
Executive, Legislative, and Judicial as defined by the constitution
Non-essential
DHS
EPA
Dept of Ag
Dept of Interior
Dept of Education
Dept of Health and Human Services
Dept of Housing and Urban Development
Dept of Labor
Dept of Transportation
Dept of Energy
Dept of Veterans Affairs (roll this into the Executive Branch)
Dept of Justice

its all BS anyways. what was it 65 or 80 billion out of 3.5 trillion. if it was something like 1 trillion or 1.5 then I might get excited. but it isn't going to happen.
if they want to stop some things, they should pull our troops, protect our borders, stop giving to other countries who don't give anything back to the taxpayers.

I would feel bad for those that did their service for the country and then won't get their pay check during this time.
However, I don't need the federal government for pretty much anything on a short term scale like this might be. So they can go take a few days off and I'll be just fine.

I'm glad I filed earlier this year. That check came and went. I'm kinda like some other folks though and I wonder if my gi bill will be put on hold. I like having that supplement right now. Isn't this supposed to start up tomorrow? I haven't followed it as much as I should.
I was just about to make a large ammo purchase too. I'll hold off on that for now.
what cracks me up about them shutting the government down, is that it actually doesn't save that much money if it saves any at all. They do the same thing in Hawaii, public workers get 2 furlough fridays a month to help "save money". Most of them are salaried workers and get paid regardless of if they are there or not. Besides, all the workers being told not to go to work just collect their check when they go back in to work. So I fail to see how this will solve anything?
Considering the stock market hasn't shown any freak out, I think it will all be ok. Nothing really happened the last time this came about anyway so no big worry.
This. I think the shutdown is more of a bluff than anything. But eh. We will see.
edit: so reading more about it now. the posts that will be closed will just have saturdays off. so you mean they will have a normal weekend like normal people? why did they work saturdays anyway?

Shut the damn thing down. For you guys that are working without paychecks, the R's in the house tried to pass a bill to fund people working and Obama threatened to veto it. The link is here:

The WH wants you to suffer so you'll switch allegiances to them. It's like the crack lords creating an artificial shortage so all the addicts become willing to do anything to get it back.
For those of you in .mil, thanks for your service, we're trying to take care of you if B.H.O. will let us. For the rest of the government employees (including my two brothers who work for it), welcome to what the rest of the private sector has been enduring for the last 2.5 years due to the incompetence of the very government that is being shut down.
How Ben Bernanke Could Crash the Stock MarketThere will be no third quantitative easing program.
The Fed's second quantitative easing program (QE2) is set to expire at the end of June. Investors are widely anticipating that our dear Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will announce another QE plan and to continue injecting the financial markets with $6 billion to $8 billion every day. But my guess is they'll be disappointed.
Oh sure, there's a good economic case for QE3. The economic recovery is still on shaky ground. Unemployment remains uncomfortably high. Even with the vast printing of new money, inflation remains stable – unless, of course, you actually count the things that have gone up in price.
So why not keep the charade going? It's done wonders for the financial markets so far. Stocks are way up. Interest rates are artificially low. And unless you have to eat food or use fuel, there's been no downside.
Unless you're Ben Bernanke.
Poor Ben. Here's a man who believes his policies prevented a global depression. He saved the banking industry, kept the U.S. economy afloat, prevented unemployment from reaching record levels, and saved the earth from Martian invaders.
But he gets no credit for any of it.
Instead, he's lambasted in front of Congress, ridiculed in the newspapers, humiliated online, and de-friended from just about everybody's Facebook page. The man gets no respect.
My guess is he's anxious to give people a taste of what things would be like if his QE programs weren't around… at least for a little while.
No one appreciates the drug dealer until the agonizing moans of the withdrawing heroin addicts drown out the sound of the TV set. "Do whatever it takes to quiet them down!" people shout. "Just get things back to the way they used to be."
Appreciation for central bankers is likely quite similar.
We all complain about the devaluation of the dollar, the unending deficit spending, and the lack of fiscal discipline, which are all aided by quantitative easing. So, too, is the run-up in stocks and the low interest rates.
"Just wait," Bernanke thinks to himself. "Let's see what everybody moans about when QE2 ends."
We're not going to see a QE3 program until we get a glimpse of what life is like without daily injections from the Fed. Maybe then the pundits will show a little appreciation for the market's drug dealer.

I've been a Republican my entire adult life and I no longer give to the party. Instead, I find conservative candidates that share my values and give to them. I can't stand the thought of my party donations going to the RINOS. If you gave to the party over the years, you're indirectly donating to some very solid folks but also giving to the likes of Charlie Crist, Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lincoln Chafee, Mike Castle, George Voinovich, Richard Lugar, Mark Kirk and other extremely anti-gun RINOS. That's not even counting the second tier of go along, get along, useful idiot types like Orin "My good friend Ted Kennedy" Hatch, John "no drilling in ANWR, campaign-finance nazi" McCain, and Lisa "never pass on an earmark" Murkowski..
Here's where my donations go these days. Rabble rouser Jim DeMint's PAC:

I find the whole thing disgusting. Every one of these politicians, dems and reps, should be held accountable for failing to complete the simple and annual task of acting responsibly. How many houses will be lost if they don't get this fixed by tonight, by the time mortgages and car payments are due and these guys are bickering like little bitches.
Personally, I won't vote for a single fucking one of them again if they go beyond a single pay check not getting paid. It's the ultimate breech of the trust relationship they have with their employees, and could start a cascade effect in the financial health of the country.

Tey expllanning why you will be late next month. Hopefullelly the kids will have easy go until the ca r dies and the credit cards are all maxed out so they have to drive to school. With having only one car the kids and mom shares the drive to and from work while going to work. Saturday come around and guess what big brother is going ona date and slipps in the rain loosing traction not a lto but enough he switcd sides of the road and smashed into another persons car. Well, it affected me this weekend. Our National Guard budget allowed us to train Friday, but without a signed C.R. or budget resolution, we had no money for Saturday and Sunday.
While it was signed at the last minute, we had to cancel our training at Fort Carson as we didn't think we would get the funding on time, so no M2 range qual, no M249 range qual, no M203 range qual, no shotgun qual. We were able to squeak out the M9 range on Friday as the range used is actually owned by the Colorado National Guard and the civilians who run it are paid by the state, not the feds.
We had no money for salaries, no money for gas for the HUMMWV's, no money for the porta-johns and trash pickup, no money for the food.
So, we will try to tack the missed training on down the road, if we can get time on the ranges and get ammo.
I personally will lose out on my Guard check, which I was hoping to pay a portion of my taxes due with it. I'll have to think how to pay them without that funding.
