OK, here it finally is -- sorry for the teases but it's becoming a reality.
A new long range rifle match coming to the front range shooters.

Many kudos to Hoser as we are openly stealing and consulting with him to build upon the Pueblo West Steel Dogs match that we all love. After touring the Colorado Rifle Club, seeing what a great facility it is, and experiencing the willingness of the BOD to promote the shooting sports, we had to figure out another LR match that "we would like to shoot". Also thanks to our WHAC friends (Cy&Juan) helping get it launched.

Inaugural Match: Sunday, April 24th (yep, Easter Sunday)
For the initial match, Easter Sunday was the only option. But, beginning in May the CRC LRPR match's regular date will be on the 4th Saturday.

Yes, it's a conflcit with the Weld County 3Gun match and we feel badly about that. When you look at the other long range matches, what was available at CRC, and trying to minimize other match conflicts, the 4th Saturday is the best option.

Here are the details for your review. Again, if you're comfortable with the rules, procedures, and flow of Hoser's Steel Dogs, this match will be very similar. Don't expect all prairie dog targets but comparable shooting challenges with a bit of extended range (out to 500m/547yds).

Below are the high level details. We'll post the remainder of the details in a separate post.
So, come on out to the Colorado Rifle Club during the next couple of months and give it a try.

LR Precision Format Match, Held by/at The Colorado Rifle Club.
Another shooting sport discipline added to the CRC’s pro-shooting sports principles.
See www.crci.org (http://www.crci.org) for the Colorado Rifle Club specifics including directions, club information, membership applications, and calendar of events. It’s a great shooting venue.

CRC is approximately 15 minutes NE of Byers, CO (on I-70). Approximately 45 mins East of I-70 & Gun Club Road (near the Aurora Gun Club).

Match Directors: RJ (quickdraw) & Ken (k2peaker)

Location: Colorado Rifle Club (CRC) in Byers, CO CRC Silhouette Range (between the East range and the 1000 yd range)

Date: Inaugural Match: April 24, 2011 (Easter Sunday). Regular monthly matches will be the 4th Saturday of every month (Feb-Nov, conditions permitting)
Time: 10:00AM MT Start

Total Rounds: Nominally 40, 50 rounds max.

Concept: This match is based upon Pueblo West’s Prairie Dog matches. Differences are that we will shoot targets ranging in size and shape from distances of 200 meters (219 yards) to 500 meters (547 yards). As we will be shooting on CRC’s Silhouette range, our targets will need to be placed in front of the available silhouette berms.
This is an excellent shooting venue that fits the LR Precision Rifle format well, within the limitations of a fixed range. To begin, we’ll keep it simple like Pueblo West’s matches. Over time, we may experiment with one field course (with movement, barricades, obstacles, alternate shooting positions) as we work through how to pull that off. Our primary safety limitation is keeping targets in front of the silhouette berms (misses to impact downrange berms).

The CRC Silhouette range has a slightly elevated shooting line with a few concrete benches but many concrete pads for prone shooting. Prone will be encouraged but benches are available. All berms / targets will be visible from all designated shooting positions.
Distance of berms – targets will be placed close to the following berm distances:
200m or 219 yards,
300m or 328 yards,
385m or 421 yards, and
500m or 547 yards.

Targets:
4 or 5 Stages consisting of engaging 10 Steel Targets ranging from 219-547 yards shot under time constraints. Note: we may experiment with 4 stages of 12 targets to get close to the 50 round count goal. It depends upon stage clearing times.
Target sizes will range from Steel Prairie Dogs to reactive steel 6” plates, 8” plates, and hanging steel in various shapes/sizes.

Match Fee: $15 entry fee (per gun), Juniors (under 18) free
Each competitor will shoot the stage four or five times requiring no more than 50 rounds.
One shot per target. No make-up shots.
No penalties for misses, only points earned for hits.
15 total seconds allowed per shot. Targets hit within the first 10 seconds are worth 10 points. Hits between 10.01 seconds and 15.00 seconds are worth 5 points. If the competitor does not take a shot before 15.01 seconds or shoots after 15.01 seconds, it is a 10 point penalty, hit or miss.

Here's some more of the specifics for the match: equipment, ammo, odds-n-ends.

Procedure: Shooters start prone or sitting behind rifle with bolt/action open, bolt or action manipulation is required after the start signal. Multiple shooters shall not be on the line with loaded rifles. The intent is on precision over speed within reasonable constraints to keep the match moving along.
Upon start signal shooter may load rifle and engage target.

Divisions – Heavy rifle, 12+ pounds; Light rifle, under 12 pounds; Semi-Auto rifle; Pistol.

Accessories: Scopes, bi-pods, sandbags, rests, rear bags, monopods, muzzle brakes, laser rangefinders allowed. Suppressors specifically allowed and encouraged. Rests: the intent is “tactical” therefore we prefer folks not show up with Sleds and F-Class style bipods, they might be allowed on an individual basis (especially for new shooters, but will not be allowed over an extended period of time). Harris, Atlas, or Sinclair Tactical bipods are the standard. Bring your own shooting mat, a couple of mats/carpet pads might be available for new shooters.

40 gn minimum bullet weight and 210 gn max bullet weight at 3200fps max velocity is allowed. No caliber restrictions. Just be sure to check the bullet weight and velocity. We are adding the 3200fps limitation due to the fact that we would like the steel to last a full season. And, to begin with, much of the steel will be personally donated. Note: CRC does not allow .50BMG or Full Auto – neither would meet the criteria for this match anyway.

Steel Core, Armor-Piercing and Tracer/Incendiary ammo specifically *NOT* allowed. $100 fine per target that is damaged with above ammo. If you are shooting ammo that you did not load, check it with a magnet to make sure it isn’t steel core. If you damage the steel, you just bought it and it will get you DQ’d from the match.

Match re-entries are allowed (2nd guns especially in a different division).

The match starts around 10:00AM and set-up starts around 8:30AM. RJ or Ken will open the main gate by 8:30AM. Please leave the gate at you found it (usually open). Drive straight up the main entrance; Silhouette range is basically straight ahead (OK, a little jog to the left). East range pistol berms will be to your right.

Odds-n-Ends:
Can non-CRC members compete? Yes
CRC Liability release will need to be signed one time per year.

Expect the shooting to end by 3PM MT.

Sight-in shots are not allowed before the match unless you are a CRC member and go to a different range on the property. If you are not a CRC member, you may be able to grab someone who is that is willing to take you as a guest to the Schuetzen (100 yd & 200 yd berms) or other range. Do not set up centerfire rifle targets on the pistol berms on the East range.

Prevailing winds: it can be windy at CRC but they are mostly Southerly or Northerly winds (Tail or Head). We are shooting due North.

Please insure your firearm is unloaded and be aware of where you muzzle is pointed while coming to or leaving the shooting line.

No handling of firearms while persons are downrange.

There is no running water at the range. Porta-potties are available.

Target distances will be provided to the shooters (Range finders are allowed but not required.)

Spotting and the final decision on hit/miss will be done by the designated spotter.

Safety glasses and ear protection is required at all times (even for your guests).

What to bring:
Firearm with scope (.243 to 30-06 recommended)
Ammo (40-50 rds)
Ballistic Data (minimim dope required for the berm distances posted)
Bipod or other front rest (pack)
Rear Bean Bag
Shooting mat
Water/Lunch/Snack
Eye and Ear Protection

I will admit that the biggest pain that RJ and I went through trying to get this match created is the scheduling issue. Between the other LongRange Rifle events (Raton SportingRifle, WHAC Steel Dogs, Pueblo Dogs, Pueblo Tactical Rifle) and when the CRC Sihlouette range is available, conflicts with other matches were inevitable. And, we realized that conflicts with USPSA matches might happen since there's barely a weekend day these days that USPSA isn't shooting somewhere.
Once we blacked out the definite conflicts to matches that "our market" would be shooting (the LR matches) and the dates we couldn't get the range, the 4th Saturday was all that was left.
Therefore, the conflict with Weld 3Gun.

This is really unfortunate as, for one, I like to shoot the Weld 3Gun matches. And we were definitely hoping to have CRC LRPR be a match that the N. CO & WY guys might be interested in driving to for some LR practice. Anyway, the net net is that match scheduling these days on the front range is impossible. I guess that means we're pretty fortunate as shooters to have so many options.

The EasterSunday happened as the CRC Sihlouette guys had already decided to move from their normal match day (4th Sunday) to the Sat before Easter. Obviously those guys get first dibs as "they built the range" and are the very reason why we can add another fun LR match.
Not optimal but it'll give us a chance to work out some kinks at the first match anyway.

Enjoyed shooting this match for the first time. Lesson learned, shooting 2 guns makes your neck hurt. Lesson 2 don't use your 308 dope accidentally on your 243, you will shoot very high!
We shot some of these:

Some of these:

And some of these:

And I thought the targets did very well, I didn't see anything shots that I couldn't easily tell if it was a hit or not.

Here is a pic of some of the shooters:

And the range:

Kudos to Ken, RJ & Jess for running a great match. Hard to believe it was only the second one as it went very smoothly.

OK, because of some confusion on dates (still....) we are going to have the CRC LRPR match on this Saturday and Sunday. 8:30ish set-up, 10 am start each day. Shoot either one or shoot both. I will email notices out from now on, but FYI the CRC website (http://www.crci.org/Event%20Schedule/tabid/610/Default.aspx) should always have the latest information. Thanks.

#1 Many thanks to Beck, the co-MD yesterday, for the assistance. And, to Tom, Dino, Bill, and others that helped set up and tear down. Keep in mind this is all volunteer stuff so whenever folks chip in, it helps considerably.

Results:
Huge kudos to Gary and AJ. In those shifting head wind conditions, that was very impressive shooting!

Miscellaneous Stats:
Don't beat me up on this. I was just curious as to calibers being shot. IMO, yesterday was a great testimony to the BC-advantages of the "wind cheater" calibers.
OK, I fudged a bit on the Rifle/Action -- broke out the Badger guys separate from the Rem/700 but didn't do that with other custom actions.

Thanks to Bill, Dino, Chuck, MikeK, and Barry for help in the set up and tear down.

Thanks to all for coming out yesterday. A beautiful day and a decent turnout of 23 shooters which is pretty good for the Deer season opening day conflict. Happy to report that Jesse got a nice buck at 500 yds shooting from sticks. Wacked 'em. Match performance does translate to the field!

(Personally, I'm just happy that in the re-tally I tied Dino. Jeesh...)

November Match: as of right now, we are planning on it. It would be the 26th (Sat. after Thanksgiving). Check in here for any updates.

General Update: Bill has offered to make room for us to store our ProPlate targets and other match items in the storage container out there. We're definitely going to take him up on that. That way, we can expand the core of folks (like Bill and GaryP and DaveK) in the event that both RJ and I can't make it for set up.

Note: the formatting below is a bit wacky. For grins, we're denoting those shooters shooting .308/.223 cals. So, those folks have that number preceding their match score.

Results:
1 Fritz A. Heavy Rifle 410 1st Heavy Rifle
2 Mike K. Heavy Rifle 370 2nd Heavy Rifle
3 Stan S Heavy Rifle 365 3rd Heavy Rifle
4 Dino Heavy Rifle 350

Match Date: 4th Saturdays.

Here are the details for your review. Don't expect all prairie dog targets but comparable shooting challenges with a bit of extended range (out to 500m/547yds).

LR Precision Format Match, Held by/at The Colorado Rifle Club.
Another shooting sport discipline added to the CRC’s pro-shooting sports principles.

See www.crci.org for the Colorado Rifle Club specifics including directions, club information, membership applications, and calendar of events. It’s a great shooting venue.

CRC is approximately 15 minutes NE of Byers, CO (on I-70). Approximately 45 mins East of I-70 & Gun Club Road (near the Aurora Gun Club).

Match Directors: RJ (quickdraw40) & Ken (k2peaker)

Location: Colorado Rifle Club (CRC) in Byers, CO CRC Silhouette Range (between the East range and the 1000 yd range)

Date: Regular monthly matches will be the 4th Saturday of every month (weather permitting)

Time: 2 strings: First at 9:00AM MT Start Sharp (Must pre-register (jessdussart@hotmail) after 12:00 noon the Monday before the match (8 am set-up), Second 12:00ishPM MT start

Total Rounds: 48

Concept: This match is based upon Pueblo West’s Prairie Dog matches. Differences are that we will shoot targets ranging in size and shape from distances of 200 meters (219 yards) to 500 meters (547 yards). As we will be shooting on CRC’s Silhouette range, our targets will need to be placed in front of the available silhouette berms.

This is an excellent shooting venue that fits the LR Precision Rifle format well, within the limitations of a fixed range. To begin, we’ll keep it simple like Pueblo West’s matches.

Targets:
Four Stages consisting of engaging 12 Steel Targets ranging from 219-547 yards shot under time constraints.

Target sizes will range from steel lolly pops, prairie dogs to reactive 10" steel rockers (www.proplatetargets.com).

Match Fee: $15 entry fee (per gun), Juniors (under 18) free

One shot per target. No make-up shots.

No penalties for misses, only points earned for hits.

15 total seconds allowed per shot. Targets hit within the first 10 seconds are worth 10 points. Hits between 10.01 seconds and 15.00 seconds are worth 5 points.

But, be sure to check the bullet weight and velocity.

RJ or Ken will open the main gate by 8:00AM.

Ammo (50-60 rds)
Ballistic Data (minimim dope required for the berm distances posted)
Bipod or other front rest (pack)
Rear Bean Bag
Shooting mat
Water/Lunch/Snack
Eye and Ear Protection

All, Thank you for the great turn-out, it was unexpected with a holiday weekend and lots of graduation parties. Next month, a lot of us will be at the Competition Dynamics Sniper's Hide Cup in Douglas, WY. Tom P. and Chuck W. have volunteered to step up and run the match for us and, as always, Bill S. will be there to assist.

Congrats to Fritz A. and Mike K. for great scores in tough conditions.

Thank you all for coming out and shooting. As always, we had a great time and enjoy seeing everyone. Just a few things to pass along. If you are going to shoot the morning match, you MUST RSVP to Jess. We had 21 shooters signed up and 28 shoot the morning match; we understand that the new guys are not aware of this procedure but if you are aware of it and show up to shoot without RSVPing in the future you will be asked to wait until the noon match begins. Also, when bringing your rifle to the line please bring it up cased and remove it there. This will prevent people being swept and rifle being pointed in unsafe directions; and of course if there are people downrange please wait until they return and we call the line hot to handle your firearms.

A HUGE thank you to those who stayed and RO'ed the afternoon shooters; the help is very much appreciated. Again, thank you all for coming out and we look forward to seeing you next month!

Would one of you CRC members who will be attending the match be willing to get me and a friend on another range to get him a quick zero? He's coming in from out of town, will be shooting one of my rifles, and will basically be stepping right off the plane and going to the match.

We will be shooting the noon match, but could be there any time that is convenient.

If you are shooting the match I think its not problem to use the schutzen range to site in.Its under construction but the site says its ok to use as long as no one is working on it(construction crew). Its only 200 yds though. The high power(1000yd) is ok also.No events are scheduled but its first come first serve. You must shoot at the distance they are at.Im shooting the 9am match.Ask for Barry when you get there if no one eles helps you out.

The scores are below. Steve M. put on a clinic. He won both matches, cleaning two stages in the a.m. and one in the p.m. match. I believe 460 ties or is the new high score.

We will no longer allow new shooters who missed the safety briefing to start late. Please be to the match at least 15 minutes before the start time to get your gear ready and attend the safety briefing. Thank you.

Thank you all for the support the past two years, time goes quickly.

All,

Unfortunately we are forced to cancel the match this weekend, the low overnight is suppose to be 18 degrees and I'm sure the roads are pretty bad.

All, As you can see with our 32 shooters in the morning, we ran late for the afternoon crowd. My sincere apologies to the p.m. crew. My only solution is to move the afternoon start time to 1pm and cancel the a.m. RSVP requirement. If we have a light turn-out in the morning, we might have a little dead time between matches, but that will be better than the alternative. Thank you everyone for the turn-out, help, and your patience. We hope you had a good time. See you next month.

Shoot this morning's round. Thanks Jessi for running it. It was the first time in about six months that I have pulled a trigger and it showed, but I did have fun and learned a few things from some of the shooters there. I was shooting my Larue AR15 with 75g Horaday, I think the only .223 I saw. First set had no wind and I missed a lot. Last set it was blowing about 12mph at 1/4 value and I hit 4 times the targets I hit in the first set. I finally hit the dog at the 500m mark [word]

I need to get to this event more, it's a blast.

All, Thank you for the help with set-up, tear-down, and the great turn-out. Thank you to whoever tried to help by organizing the score sheets by putting them in order, but we usually keep the morning relay separate from the afternoon relay.... so, the scores are combined this month.

Next month we will be doing a Memorial Match for Harry Bovos (who has shot our match numerous times) who is in the hospital with Stage 4 Bladder cancer. We will shoot the targets going back on each berm after every shot instead of staying on the same berm until all of those targets are all engaged. Gary P. tells me this is how Harry likes to practice. We will donate a portion of the match proceeds to a charity of Harry's choice. Gary will bring a card for everyone to sign for Harry. Jess will be running the match again in October, as a number of us will be at the Competition Dynamics Team Match in New Mexico.

Also, Kevin is also organizing a custom rifle raffle for Scott Decapio who lost his house in the flood, keep an eye out for another email from me here about this. This will be comprised of local vendors who donated their services or product. Please note who these vendors are and thank/support them!

All,

We waited till the last minute to hopefully have different information, but there is just no way to have a match tomorrow. The lows will be in the single digits and the highs will be in the 30s. Just too cold to have a match and the roads will be super muddy with the snow we received earlier this week.

If you have not bought a ticket for Scotty yet, there is still (barely) time on the SniperHide thread, please do so ASAP if you have not yet.

The raffle will be next Saturday at 1 pm at the TriggerTime indoor gun club in at the Longmont/I-25 exit. If you have not been to TriggerTime yet, this is a great opportunity to check out their range and sales floor. Indoor 100 yard rifle bays, 25 yard pistol bays and all the long range goodies and accessories with an Owner and salesman who compete in matches to answer questions. Where else, locally, can you compare Steiner, Schmidt, and Premier scopes?

Please support the vendors who supported the rifle raffle:
Steiner (local)
Burris (local)
TAB
Spuhr
TriggerTime (local)
Bighorn Actions (local)
Butch's Reloading (local - NM)
Mile High (local)
XLR Industries (local)
Beanland Custom Rifles (local - OK)

I will try and get email addresses for everyone so we can write and thank them for their support. I know we raised almost $10,000, and this is AWESOME.

Thank you everyone for supporting the raffle.

If the weather cooperates, we will have a December match.

Match is a go for this weekend barring any unforeseen weather conflicts.

1st match: set-up 8:00, shooter's meeting 8:45, start at 9 sharp.

2nd match: shooter's meeting 11:45, start at 12:00 noon. (or as soon as possible after morning match, but no earlier than noon).

Please note we are moving the afternoon match from 1pm to back to noon because of the light turn-out at the morning match last month. All we can do is make the best guess we can based on the previous month and attempt to minimize down time.

See you there!

After much thought we've made the tough decision to cancel tomorrow's CRC LRPR match. With a high of 40 we all know how miserable it is under that awning add to that a 60% chance of several types of we stuff falling from the sky and you get a bad day for a match.

How's it looking for February? Targets back from spa? Maybe it'll be decent weather......

If the weather is good, we should have the targets back and be good for a match.

Rumor has it this month is a cancel for mud.

I have been told it is cancelled, but it is not for mud. Dry as a bone out there...and windy. :)

Again, the range director asked is not to have the match because of road conditions. Deja vu...

Oh well, hopefully next month

Unrelated Question - Any chance of going back to morning and afternoon matches this year?

Probably one match, indefinitely. This is my 6th year doing this on my own, 100 percent volunteer. People want to be assistant match directors, then quit shooting after a year. Maybe we could do a second match if I found the right assistant match director, but the logistics of taking broken targets home, scoring, and getting fixed targets back the next month is a little crazy.

Appreciate you running the match!

Hate to do this again, but with the amount of snow we got yesterday and more snow expected Saturday, we'll have to cancel the match again. See you in April.

Hoping to get out and give this a try in the next month or two depending on work. Never shot out past 300 yards with any regularity.

Looking through the thread, it looks like there's been no pre-registration in the past - still the case?

March and April 2021 matches were cancelled "due to weather" and "mud" despite lovely weather forecasts and dry conditions.

Odd, strange?

I dont think the match director is alone making the weather decisions. I am pretty sure the board at CRC has input.
