to license or not?

I have 40 acres that is surrounded by 20,000 private acres with no BLM land near. Does anyone know if I "have" to get a license to harvest a single elk? I and the other land owners all share hunting rights, so I can travel on to any of the adjoining land and they can travel onto mine.

Any experts out there?

Yes you do need a license from what you are describing, but I would call the DOW 303-297-1192 and see if there are enough contiguous acres you may have one of the other land owners get some landowner vouchers if they qualify.

Either way Good luck or the DOW should be able to answer the legalities

Where is the land? There is a hunt in Alamosa area where landowners can get tags for use by themselves or others, they call it a "damage hunt" or something

Land owner tags. There is NO minimum on acerage.

The land is near San Luis, so not near Alamosa.

I haven't heard what a "landowner tag" is. No info about it on DOW website, but I am calling them tomorrow.

If it is in a draw area, the minimum acreage to apply for the landowner voucher system is 160 contiguous acres, I believe. You can get a private land only tag (PLO) with no minimum acreage, but that is different than land owner vouchers.

YES you "have" to get a license. Private land or not, you can't kill one without a license. Only exception is a high fence game ranch where they raise their own.
