View Full Version : If the memory is correct,
About this time within the next couple of days, in 1986, I was on my way to Grenada. Interesting little field trip.
Learned a couple of things.
#1,When you tweak your knee bad enough that you can barely walk. Yet elect, to remain with the platoon for the duration, Even though you are "bringing up the rear" about 150 yrds behind everybody. For the last 5 months of your time there, when buying beer, If one of those guys from that platoon happen to be there at the same time, You don't pay. They do. Even the Platoon Leader.[Tooth]
#2, Do Not, Repeat DO NOT fall asleep on the beach in the afternoon. Even if it was April, that is some intense sun down there. The guy that did it, ended up with 2nd degree burns on his back. Fortunately, he was wearing jeans so his legs didn't get it. That must have been a painful ride home.
I had fun.

I remember being with my Aunt as she geared up to go, getting all her gear bags and cammo's ready to deploy. She bought a Gameboy, I thought it was awesome. I remember her clearly saying that in the military, it's all about "Hurry up and wait". She was a med-evac nurse on C-130's, from Vietname through the late 90's. By the time she left, she was a Major in the Nat Guard. Still have one of her flag patches from 'Nam, on one of my bags.

I would've been in a vault in Omaha, NE looking at satellite photos...
Cool story about your aunt, Hoosier.

I had been in Germany stationed at Bamberg with the 1st Armored Div for about three months and most likely, at my first field problem in Graf in 1986.
In 1991, I was overseas for Desert Storm...missing out on everything as I was light Infantry at the time. Pulled a lot of guard duty on crap...

Me too but by April I was in Kobar towers and saying goodby to some of my 1ID friends and signing in to the 22 subcom. I got orders just before I left so got to spend almost a year. My, how time flies.[Beer]
If my memory serves me correctly, you made a very similar post about this last year.

Jeez, my kids are older than you guys!
I would have been 2 months into my job at UAL. But that was after a hitch in the USAF and working two other jobs. But I was working midnights, raising two small kids and didn't see a whole lot of news; what happened in Miami that April day in 1986 never registered with me until much later.
BTW, thanks for those of you who wore the suit, whatever the flavor, military or LEO. I wore it for 4 years but nobody picked a fight with us between 1975 and 1979, so I got to stay home.
20 years ago I was busting my butt as a flight instructor and living with the most beautiful woman in Tulsa.
Those were some good times.....

shhh... we know it happened in 83, but if you agitate his Alzheimers it causes his PTSD to flare up.

I was living north of Seattle, wife just had our second boy. Had a old 27 ft Fairliner (cabin cruiser) with a 350 chevy engine sitting in the marina. Good times!
