View Full Version : Winchester PDX1 vs Hornady Critical Defense
Wondering if anyone has had a chance to compare Winchester PDX1 vs Hornady Critical Defense? If so what are your personal impressions of these rounds?

I really like the guys who started this website. Unfortunately, most of the information is quite old. The article referenced in the above link was just posted last summer, though.
I also like Fire Arms Tactical. Here is another option.

I don't have any experience with the Critical defense (although I really like Hornady products), but considering the weight options that are offered in the CD I would pass, especially in the 9mm and 45. YMMV, but I prefer 124/127/147 in 9mm, and nothing but 230gr in 45. Sorry I wasn't able to give the answer you were looking for, but something to think about anyway.
I believe last month's (aprl2011 edition) of Guns and Ammo covered the entire self defense 12ga shells.
Now.... I can't remember everything, but I can recall Hornady Critical defense uses some kinda different wads to make the shot pattern tighter to reduce the chance of stray shots.
PDX1 (which I have) has a 1oz slug and 3- 00 shots.
Maybe guns and ammo website may have the ad.

I'm personally a huge fan of the Winchester SXT/PDX1/whatever they're calling it this week. Last time I went to the boonies, my friends and I did some informal ballistics testing using cantaloupes. The Speer Gold Dot didn't expand worth a damn, but the SXT/PDX1 performed beautifully. Haven't messed around with the Critical Defense yet though.

"The Speer Gold Dot didn't expand worth a damn" What cal at what range?
So what is the difference 38spl+P 130gr Winchester LE Ranger SXT HP and the Winchester PDX1, is it the same bullet?
I have tried the 38spl+P 130gr Winchester LE Ranger SXT HP I would give it a good rating on penetration /Expansion
Have not gotten around to getting any of the Hornady Critical defense 38spl.
Because of my tests with the Barnes solid copper 38cal for 357mag 140gr HP
came out with great rating on penetration /Expansion so my next project is getting some Barnes sold copper 38cal 110gr HP bullets and working up a load.

We used the 9mm 124 grain Gold Dot. Target was at about 15 yards. Personally, what really soured me to the Gold Dot was seeing the autopsy report and photos from the Philadelphia PD shooting a few years back. The officers were all firing .40 cal Gold Dots, and they failed to perform miserably. I'll see if I can find the link to this info and post it. And yes, the Ranger SXT and the PDX1 are the same thing, Winchester just changed the name.

I would bet the results were different for each caliber and/or bullet weight. What caliber and bullet weight are you asking about?
I recently did a lot of research to choose the best handgun ammo for defense. While Winchester Ranger T series came out on top in quite a few calibers, it didn't cover them all and didn't cover all bullet weights for a given caliber either.
If your caliber is .45 ACP; Winchester is "kinda +P without +P marking" and Hornady is pretty sissy load: Winchester 230gr 876 fps and Hornady FTX 185gr 925 fps
Velocities from 3" STI Elektra, from 4.3" Schuemann AET same loads 230gr 941 fps and 185gr 992 fps.
