I bought a bunch of kits years ago and finally got started at a build party in December. I've gradually got most of the tools. I now have 3 kits moving, one AMD-65 and two Romy G's. I have NDS receivers for all of them and sight rails on the Romy's.

It has been a learning experience. Saying learning makes me feel less dumb. Lots of broken drill bits and wasting time undoing things. I do have all tools needed, except headspace gauges. I'd like to press my first barrel in with somebody who has done it before.

If you follow the AK boards you might seen some discussion of Swedish pine tar and mixed shellac. The Romy's were finished that way. I'd be happy to share some. I have enough pine tar for lots of kits and quite a bit of shellac.

I've replaced the gas pistons and have Tapco FCG's, double hook for the Romy's and single hook for the AMD-65. I have USA slant brakes for the Romy's and an AK Builder muzzle brake to make the AMD-65 legal, not an SBR. I do have an oxy torch but haven't lit it in ages and would be afraid of wrecking the barrel if is silver soldered it myself. Maybe BP Tactical should do it. My workroom is small but I host a few people or travel. I used KG Gun Kote AK black on the receivers and made a total mess my first time and now it is just a poor job. I'll get better. I wish I had done the Romy barrels. They looked good before and are weak next to the receivers.

hey Steve
hit up jreifsh80 or 68charger
im almost possitive they will lend a helping hand
between the 2 of them they have all the tools you can ever need to build with-im not sure if they have headspace guages for 5.45x39 but im sure they can find some
now go get them built!![Tooth]

These are all 7.62x39. I don't have any 5.45 kits. Must have come from reading all that Col. Cooper about poodle shooters. It is cool to be close. I got these kits over 5 years ago and they just sat with other priorities.

I've taken photos as I worked and this link should work. http://s1119.photobucket.com/albums/k629/OldGeezerStuff/AK%20Kits/

I created subfolders for each kit. There will be more!

I use the "all thread" technique.

Step 1. Get yourself a piece of 1/4" all thread and 4 nuts and washers.

Step 2. polish up the barrel where it will be going into the trunnion and then freeze the barrel assembly for 24 hours.

Step 3. Remove bolt from carrier and put carrier into receiver and run it forward. Then run the all thread through the carrier and put 2 washers and 2 nuts behind the carrier on the all thread.

Step 4. Remove cold ass barrel from freezer and run the all thread through the barrel and GREASE the 2 washers and 1 nut on the other end of the barrel.

Step 5. Start tightening the nut on the muzzle end of the barrel and the all thread will pull the barrel into the trunnion.

Some times they are real tight and you need to tighten the nut on the all thread and then tap the rear sight block with a hammer. You will see the barrel lurch into the trunnion and the tension will loosen on the all thread. Make sure you use a crescent wrench on the rear sight block to keep everything aligned and make sure you guide the piston into the gas block when the barrel gets close.

I have used this on 4 builds and it works great.

Heres a similar set up but its the same idea. http://www.gunco.net/forums/f3/amazing-allthread-barrel-press-37833/

Heres another one. http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13164

I could help out, but don't have Headspace gauges myself- would need to borrow them...

I've got a press, and a mill to drill for an oversize pin if needed...

and you only have to travel about 100ft after assembly for a test fire at my place, but it is a bit of a drive.

I spoke to Justin and got some helpful pointers. I pressed the AMD-65 barrel in tonight and it slid slick. Headspace is perfect. I'll be meeting BPtactical to make the muzzle brake solidly in. Great fun.

It was a lot easier than I thought. I'm tempted to do the Romy's and meet to shoot these.

Swedish Pine Tar is amazing stuff. Here's some Romy wood after the tar:

Here's after shellac on top. I knocked down the gloss with some 0000 steel wool. It was really shiny.

I'm using links since these are higher res pictures.

I have way more tar then I need and quite a lot of shellac flakes. I'd be happy to share with local builders. BYOC (Bring Your Own Containers).

+1. The only thing I would add is that I use grade 8 all-thread and barrel nuts, which can be found at A&A Trading Post on Broadway, and I use a brass fitting on the muzzle end to protect the crown. I have also put the receiver in the oven at around 300 degrees and used a small amount of anti-sieze compound on the barrel, but I don't have any proof it makes any difference. I also use a drilled out 1/4" uni-strut nut with an extra hole in it to clear the 'tail' on the bc end. Start with the rsb canted slightly to the right as it will tend to twist with the nut when you tighten it.

I'm not sold on the screw tightening method. Both methods have can mess up.

The AMD-65 went in real smooth last night. I have a JEGS 12 ton press and it wasn't straining at all. I used dark cutting oil as lube and lightly dressed the edges. I lurked on the sites long before I started my building. One problem with pressing can be a bad support for the trunnion. If the force down isn't even it can get bad real fast. I was using the AK Front Trunnion Press Fixture from gunthings. It gave a solid support to both sides of the trunnion and the press went straight. I had a piece of round brass slightly smaller in diameter than the outside of the barrel so I could see what was happening. My two concerns were the press getting off center or using too much force but neither happened.

The only time I had a problem with the all thread was when the barrel was galled from being removed from the trunnion. It had a real tough time going back in. Other than that it has been real easy.
