2 things i do as well:

1st on the mag tube I use Rem-Oil as per Remington recommendations for their 11-87 and 1100's. This dries and leaves a Teflon residue to lubricate and make cleaning easier. I do the same on the Browning Gold shown in the video that I do my Remmy's. I too AVOID WD-40.

2nd instead of using a wire brush to clean off the carbon I use steel wool. Less chance of buggering up the mag tube and causing a nick that will take out your gas rings.

I have never soaked my gas piston in solvent. I just wipe it with a dry cloth.
Maybe I'm wrong, but 10,000 plus rounds from each of my semi autos and it has never been the issue with cycling. (most of the time on the Remy it is the o-ring). I do thoroughly clean the piston rings until they are free of carbon... again with steel wool.

I pretty much agree with the above. I just wipe down the insides after heavy use and apply some silicon spray lubricant on the non-metal parts in my Mossberg 930 so I don't erode the seal.
