I just finished an AMD-65 and had to take it to the range. Went to the south site. It sent 150 rounds downrange without a failure. A real AK!

This is a great quality kit I got years ago. Looked unused.

For the evil 922R compliance I used:

NDS receiver. Waffenworks had a special om them a while ago.
Tapco gas piston.
Tapco single hook G2 FCG. (3 parts)
Ak-Builder Extended Muzzle Brake - It looks more like the original than the Tapco

I used a Yugo sling swivel for the rear.

Robert at BP Tactical did a perfect job of blind pinning the brake so it is not an SBR.

I added an MPK2 side rail from Collectors Source DFW. It is nice. I'm clumsy with a Shepard's Crook to retain the FCG and wanted to use the RSA retaining plate. The side rail works from internal screws which would have obstructed the plate. I moved the rail 1/4" forwards which let it work. It needed a little grinding to work I also had to grind a slot in the plate but it holds the FCG, especially after 150 rounds.

The front handguard took a little fitting. When I pressed the barrel the headspace was perfect with the pin hole so no work there, just press the pin back in.

I really thought I'd lost it doing final assembly last night. The Tapco Single Hook G2 was defective! After a couple of hours of struggle I opened another one and the dimensions were different! I popped the new one in a couple of minutes and it worked. I'd heard about a G2 recall but never read it. There are bad ones. I do like them. The hollow tube makes installing the trigger group a snap. I had no trigger slap.

I did a rough adjustment on the scope but it didn't work at all at the range. It needs more adjustment. I used the iron sights and hit the target.

I messed the pad up trying to remove it. I'll either fix it or replace it.

Real fun. I have a couple of Romy G2 kits almost ready and will be doing those next.

Your amd turned out very nice steve! Maybe you should get your two romys built too then get together and do some refinish work. Have you heard how that alumahide is?

I have an old red Tacoma with a camper shell. I went south aways. I would have stayed longer but the wind was strong and cold so most of my guns were left unfired.

May I ask how much you have invested? I'm thinking about trying a kit. I would love to attend a build party.

I'm not that sure how much I spent. I got the kit around 2006 when they were cheap. Kits then were cheap and they came with barrels. Now they're not so cheap and you have to fit a barrel which is a lot of precise work.

I ultimately got most of the tools but I still have a bunch of kits waiting to be assembled. I would not do a screw build and rivets require tools. You also have compliance parts to buy and this required a gunsmith to blind pin the muzzle brake.

If you want to get an AMD-65, get the one from Centerfire through a friendly FFL and it would be way cheaper.

I fixed it up a bit. The wire stock is bit hard. I ended up with a chin weld which wasn't comfortable. I got an extension from AMD65 Tech. It raises it to a nice height and has some rubber over the metal. I decided to do my first paracord wrap on it and it worked pretty good for a first time. I also added a butt pad to get another inch in length. With the huge muzzle brake it has little recoil.
