I have a GI issue Camillus folding pocket knife (all stainless one, a lot like the old Boy Scout pocket knife) that I carry everywhere with me. I have a Becker Campanion (Pre-Kabar) as well as a Kabar Kukri machete that stay with my BOB, along with a SOG multi tool.

ETA - I picked up one of the new production Gerber Mk II's at the Tanner recently, cheap. I'm not sure yet if I like it better than my Desert Dagger, but I've always wanted one and I sure wasn't going to pay $200+ for any of the ones I've seen for sale lately.

I bought the Gerber LMF ASEK about a year ago from LAPG-great built like a tank knife !! I've since become a huge fan of RAT Cutlery (now ESEE knives). They make some great 3.5" fixed blade knives for EDC. I'm waiting for their new Junglas knife to be released this month. That will give me a good range of different size knives for different usages. The only thing about the Gerber is I wished it hadn't been a combo blade. I prefer good quality plain edges that if kept properly sharpened will do any job you need for it to do. JMHO

With the grey epoxy-coated blade and leather sheath, not Kydex?
I have one of those too, serious piece of steel. Could be a touch longer but it's such a hog I call mine "The Buick Skinner".

What's the difference between the LMF Infantry and the LMF ASEK? ASEK is about 50 bucks more on this site, looks to be the same thing though???

I carried a SOG Seal Pup back in my Navy VBSS days in the northern gulf. I absolutely loved that powder coated blade in a marine environment. Every other day or so I would run a stone over the edge to clean it up. Tough as nails too. I swore I was gonna chip the blade, using it to cut metal tamper seals off cargo containers, or snap the blade while prying open corroded sounding tube caps.

I am certainly glad you mentioned that. I did a lot of looking into knives and really fell onto the Seal Pup. It size, durability, color, off the top of my head are things I looked at. I also have an Air Force Pilot's knife...you know the old school one. It works great for camping and such and I have a great edge on it. It is a cheap way to go if you are on a really tight budget but my thought it is is that it wont last more than one serious survival excursion, hence my carrying of the Pup. I certainly would like to hear more stories about its uses if you have them. I am an army guy so you will have to fill me in on what a VBSS is?

VBSS = Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure. Kind of like High Seas Highway Patrol. Following the invasion, we boarded and inspected every merchant vessel entering and exiting Iraqi waters. We looked for contraband coming in, and smuggled goods coming out. A lot of fuel was being smuggled out of the port cities (mostly Al-Faw) and sold on the black market.
As for "Tales of the the SOG Seal Pup", I really only have one story. In addition to boarding vessels, we also provided small boat security for Iraq's two oil terminals, Mina Al Bakir Oil Terminal (now Al Basra Oil Terminal), and Kwahr Al Abot (I may be wrong on the last one). We were tasked with keeping all surface traffic at least two miles away. This included the local fishing dhows (boats). They would always try to cut through the security zone to save fuel while coming in and out of port, and were often towing their nets. They would play dumb when we would come along side and order them away. Our Boarding Officer would tell me to take my knife (since most of the other guys carried multi-tools) and cut their nets. As soon as they saw the Seal Pup in my hand, headed towards their nets, their english improved dramatically. After a few days of that, all I had to do was pull the knife and point to their nets and they got the message.
[/long drawn out story]

x3 on the Seal pup, I bought the elite model last spring, and took it on several camping trips, doing everything from cutting cord to chopping branches for firewood. Its still as sharp as the day I got it. The nylon sheath has a nice sized pouch on the front that I keep a firestarter and sharpening stone in. I have been eyeballing the Gerber LMF II tho, may be one of my next purchases.
Got my Gerber in - very nice knife & sheath combo!

I always carry my gerber ar 3.0 with me.
and when im out campign and such I have that same gerber LMF II that everyone eles has. I love it, it is a great knife!
I got a Seal Pup and the Gerber LMF ASEK at the same time (I cheaped out and wanted to save $20 by getting the Gerber without the sheath, dumb move on my part. Someday I have to buy one), but ended up giving the SOG to my oldest son (13).
It was so light and the handle felt like cheap Chinese plastic, I figured the thing would shatter if subject to anything rougher than a heavy sneeze. I don't go around intentionally destroying things so I don't know for sure, but now I'm wondering if I underestimated the thing.

I just can't see half serrated blades. Waste of blade use. Good maintained sharp plain edge in my opinion is hard to beat. [Beer]
That Bear Grylls knife looks really awesome with that stuff that he has in there.
I have a question about the sharpened back edge of the knife. I have a knife with a sharpened back edge, and I thought it was very cool. However, upon actually using the knife, it seems like it makes it a little more difficult to handle safely. In addition to that, I can still baton wood with it just fine, but my wooden "hammer" has a lot shorter life because of that sharpened rear edge. What is the specific purpose of that? Is it a combat thing?
EDIT: I also wonder about half serrated blades. The serrated section is so short, that it seems like it'd only be useful for cutting ropes and things of similar size.
I have a question about the sharpened back edge of the knife. What is the specific purpose of that? Is it a combat thing?
Don't know a specific answer but here are my thoughts:
A back blade that is sharpened creates a cleaner "stabbing" point along with more "styles" (cuts/slashes/etc) to use if you are familiar with knife fighting techniques. However, the sharpened back blade is useless (in my opinion) without the blood lets in the body of the knife.
StagLefty
11-09-2010, 11:15
Sharpened back edges are more for a fighting/combat knife. In my uses such as batonning they can be unsafe. Also local knife laws may make them illegal according to the knife forum I frequent. The short section of serrations take away from the usefulness of a full usable knife edge JMHO. This is my latest all around camp knife set up[Beer]

I know of many folks that have zero use for a partial serated blade, and I see where most of them are coming from. Myself however, I really like having the partial seration. There have been times when cutting rope, that I have attempted to cut the rope with the non serated edge, and it literally took a sawing motion several times (probably 5 or more), whereas the same rope with the serated blade, l was able to make one good cut, and was half way through the rope, and another cut and I was all the way through. If there is a possibilty you will be using heavy rope (rock climbing, rappelling etc.), I highly encourage a serated edge.
Bear, that is exactly what I was thinking about. Stag, I love that knife set up of yours. I need to copy it. Can you get all the components at the same place? What is in that pouch next to the fire stick? Compass?

That's a pretty good answer. My "survival" knife is a Sog Seal pup elite, and although not a very large blade, it has plenty of straight edge for my needs. I haven't owned too many knives that don't have some seration to them. Guess it's just a personal preference thing for most of us.

I've only appreciated knives from afar until very recently. Until I've actually tried to use a knife to do something, I just had no idea what good qualities of a knife actually were. I'm thankful for this thread. It has shown me that all those crappy display case knives I bought as a tourist as a kid are utter junk. I have one $19 Cold Steel Tanto now that is more useful than all those others put together, and even that knife is crap compared to the stuff in this thread.

I've always just carried my leatherman. Never had much of a need for a Good Knife. A couple years ago I found a Spyderco on the side of the road near the house here. Looks like it was just lost off a car bumper or something, looks new.
I started carrying it and using it a few weeks back, and it's great to have a high quality knife that is easy access and sharp.
But I had an operator malfunction with it and needless to say it's sharp.

DOH!
At least it sewed your finger up. Hell of a knife.
I used to shapen knives back in my Unit.
All because some one borrowed my knife to slice up an apple.
Iwarned him it was SHARP,,he had 3 fingers looking like yours there gnihcraes.
And the damn apple was ruined.
K-bar for a big knife. Though I want an ESEE or WETSU's new knife. I've had/own many but my big paws don't like small handles.
EDC is a beat to shit kershaw tanto half serrated that I've carried for over 5 years. When this one finally goes I've got it's twin NIB.
I also carry gerber 600 as often as possible. No swiss army knives anymore since i swore off non locker knifes after winding up with a handful of gnihcraes like fingers.

I have a leather handled ka-bar that seems indestructible... for the better part of 18 years :P
Lately though I've been taking a Cold Steel Busman Bowie when I go camping... for about 25 bucks it was well worth it, stays decently sharp and since it was so cheap I don't feel bad about throwing/digging/chopping/splitting/hammering with it... Also would make a decent spear if the need came up.
I took a fairly good sized aspen tree down - well, chopped it up - when a wind storm knocked it down in my back yard with one of cold steels cheep-o kukries... Worst part about that blade is that the grip is murder on your hands, did a fun paracord katana wrap on it and it's pretty nice now... It also came with a terribly off-center sharpening job but was able to fix that with a file while bored in a couple of hours.

talk about a knofe whore! That is a sweet selection of cutlery you have.
A lot of these photos are older collection shots. I have gone through a lot of knives in the past several years. I have culled the collection recently and now I'm down to the ones I use and like the most.
What is the name of the style of the knives in that last picture? I remember my dad having some old knife just like those ones in the picture. It even had that little chunk out of the bottom of the blade just above the handle. What are those for?
The khukuri is the traditional knife of Nepal. The cutout is called a "cho" It's purpose or symbolism is lost. Even the makers or "kamis" as they are called don't know the true meaning. Some say it represents the hindu symbol of fertility, a cow track, cow horns, etc. Others speculate that it keeps blood on the blade from dripping on to the handle.
The majority of my khuk collection has been passed on. I'm amassing firearms now. [ROFL2]

Of course. Not using them would be like building rifles and not shooting them, where's the fun in that?

I carry a Becker Companion.
http://www.tomarskabars.com/BK-2_INFO.html
Massive, inexpensive and high quality steel. I have a Becker Brute too, and have used both in the backcountry. The brute has a wider back near the rear edge to use for batoning the blade. I'm starting to appreciate the kukri design more and more though. the sheath leaves something to be desired, so I wrapped it in paracord for durability. Hell, I wrap EVERYTHING in paracord.
I just bought a Stryker and it's 5/16 inch steel, just massive.
http://www.tactical-life.com/online/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/stryker.jpg
I steer towards heavier knives mostly because I've broken the thinner ones while misusing them. I just dont want some casual misuse to damage my only tool. The Becker Companion I bought for 47 bucks from tomarskabars.com it's a bit more expensive now, but it's a no-frills kinda knife. No fancy finish, no fancy scales (although you can buy some) and a kydex sheath. I'm just a heavy knife guy nowadays. ESEE and the like are good knives, but they are pricey for my tastes.

Just curious to know what everybody thinks is the best survival knife? I use a Gurka Knife, KaBar and a SOG Seal Pup. They have all served well over the years.
What do you use? Pic's would be nice.
I love my Seal pup, fantastic knife.
That's the one I take hiking/hunting/fishing. If I found myself in a survival situation it would be my go-to blade.

Both knives in the pic are fairly new to me, the smaller one (IZULA) is my daily carry, and the larger one (ESEE4), is my camping/backpacking/survival knife. I have yet to use either of them very hard, but the quality alone leaves me confident, that once I need them, they will be phenomenal. I've also used the Seal Pup Elite in the past, and it's also a great knife.

For around the same price the Seal Pup elite retails for, you can get a 100% USA made ESEE, that IS IMO better than the Sog.

The Companion and the Brute. I believe in tool steel!!!
I did too, till I found out how hard to sharpen my D2 Kabar is.
Scrapyard knives are just about as good as it gets IMO. Smaller company cause they don't really make any of the cheap crap people like to buy (your everyday folder). Look up knife destruction tests on youtube, there's a guy that does em. Check out the one for the SEAL and the one for the Scrapyard, a lot of us (including me) have a SEAL/pup so keep in mind how good of a knife it is, then compare it to the Scrapyard. That video is what sold me on them.
FYI the destruction tests, the guy basically cuts shit from softest to toughest and sees how it does (starts with a piece of fruit, ends with steel plate or concrete), tests how well they chop, pry, chisel, etc. till he breaks it.

Seki city is in Japan and known for making really good knives. I have several, they hold an edge wonderfully and take some pretty rough use. As far as Cols Steel SRKs loosing the handle. I have 2 and havent had the problem. 1 of them gets used pretty hard ona regular basis. Maybe I have been lucky.

Ouch. Customer service at Scrapyard leaves something to be desired. Their website shows quite a few knives for sale, types, prices, etc. Remember these are not $400 and up customs, these are basically $100 and some change knives. When I inquired via email as to the availability of a knife shown and to verify price- I was told the following virtually word for word- we put a few knives up on the order page for 4-8 weeks, when they're gone we take them down and they may never be available again. We only have blah and blah avail at this time. Thank you.
Have a nice day Scrapyard and goodbye. (from me)

Here ya go.
Top: SOG SEAL Pup, early version with "SEKI-JAPAN" blade stamp. Tip has been broken and reground, sharpened more times than I can count, also sharpened an edge along an inch or so on top.
Middle: Ka-Bar D2 Extreme, this is the tool steel one. Tip has been broken and reground (missing about 1"), butt broken off, also sharpened the top curve.
Bottom: CRKT M16-14SFG, has lost teeth on serrations since that pic.
I treat my knives more as tools than simply blades. They see as much time prying, hammering, etc. as they do cutting [Tooth]

I have a Seal 2000 knife that sits in a box. I'm sure it's tough, but just too damn big for me to see any practical use. The Seal Pup, on the other hand is a good all-rounder in terms of size, price and quality. I was given a LMF II, and it's a good beefy knife, and something I would consider a "survival" knife, but definitely not something I'd take hunting (the seal pup I'd consider). Too clumsy for me.
I have a Boker Integral Hunter that's probably my favorite, but also three times the price as the others...

Ontario knives are good and so is the Tak II. The difference with the ESEE knives is the heat treatment by Rowan that has really improved the quality, plus the sheaths that come with them. This was the main reason for the split between Jeff Randall and Ontario. JMHO [Beer]
