Must be a blackie, right? Couldn't be from a cat...could it? Some of those scratches are an inch deep easily (detail does not come across in these pics). Whatever it is, damn...

That tree has been marked a few times. Must be a real sweet one. Cool. Porcupines also do that up here in the northland.

I don't have any other Aspens where I've seen that kind of damage, pretty cool actually. Here's my reference point, I actually watched a young bull do this, gnawin' like a monster, but this pine has a different end result (as one would expect, totally different type of tree). This was last year but I snapped the shot minutes ago. Anyway, an elk calling card, just tossin' this out there...

Figure 54. Tooth marks from a porcupine are clearly visible in the margins of this sporulating rust canker.

This bull was marking his territory in Rocky Mountain National Park this past September. I also watched him peel bark with his teeth. Photo and explanation by Lynn B.

I have heard that the gland on a bulls face near his eyes that secretes a smell so when a bull marks a tree with his teeth he can leave the scent, as well as the ones at the antler bases when he is polishing the velvet off.
