I've been pretty prepared for when the SHTF but my latest tool is live animal traps. Rabbits, squirrels ect.... they are pretty tasty. I have all the wheat, rice, seeds, dried butter & eggs but where's the beef? I have some property but don't see much big game up there. Harbor Freight had some on sale a couple weeks back for about $25 so I grabbed some.

I have one. Used to trap the cats when they start to get out of hand. No fun when ya get a skunk in one. [Coffee]

I got one from Harbor Freight a while back that I didn't like at all. The one I got at Home Depot right after (about a year ago) is really good. I capture squirrels all the time.

I'll have to give them a try and see if they are worth a crap. There are enough rabbits in most neighborhoods to feed a army it seems like. I wonder if you could catch some rabbits and breed them if it looks like a long term disaster.

Now this is a smart man! Do you think the foot catching traps would work better?

If you have some place to keep them you could. But you would need a pen of some sorts that they cant dig under and get out.

I've built one and have several I picked up of CL. I use them for rabbit control in the garden/lawn. $25 seems like a good price. I trolled CL until I found them for $10-15.

after the first few squirrels, they get smart and won't go in the trap.

Then you get out the high power bb gun?

True, I have had to move my trap several times and do different configurations to trick them into getting into the trap

Conni bear, leg holds, snares and live traps all have their uses. Leg holds in a city are not a good idea.

Other than survival situations non live traps are not legal in colorado.

Like Wulf202 said.
"foot catching traps" or "leghold traps" are....with some exceptions....illegal in this state.

In a SHTF scenario, I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the ones I have.

Colo Rev Stat...
33-6-203. General prohibition - penalties.

(1) Except as otherwise provided in this part 2, it is unlawful to take wildlife with any leghold trap, any instant kill body-gripping design trap, or by poison or snare in the state of Colorado. Penalties shall be as provided in section 33-6-109 unless a different penalty is specifically provided in this part 2.
