I heard that if you go into the bathroom, close the door, turn off the lights, and say "Cinco De Mayo" into the mirror three times, that a young woman receives a US bought AK-47 for a gift at her Cincinera.

What really pissed me off during high school was the stupidity surrounding Cinco de Mayo. Chicano's walking around the school with the Mexican flag draped around their shoulders, or stretched across the hood of their cars. Most of those idiot kids were born HERE! "You're a fucking American, get your head out of your ass. Feel free to go back to Mexico if you feel that strongly about your mis-dated holiday!"

Then the stupid cowboys would fly their redneck flag, just to cause trouble. "Get your head out of your ass, redneck. That side lost the war. Fly the right flag or GTFO."

Every year my comments would be the same to both sides.... sheesh.

I don't get why they even fly the flag... They beat the French... Wow, what an accomplishment. I'm sure my kids could do that right now.

I thought it was celebrating that they just decided not to pay a debt back to the French. Super victory.

Not only a minor victory, but a temporary one...

The French invasion

Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juárez and his government into retreat.[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-13) Moving on from Veracruz towards Mexico City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_City), the French army encountered heavy resistance from the Mexicans near Puebla, at the Mexican forts of Loreto and Guadalupe.[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-mexonline.com-14) The 8,000-strong French army attacked the much poorer equipped Mexican army of 4,000. Yet the Mexicans managed to decisively crush the French army, the best army at the time, and one that had not been defeated for almost 50 years.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-15)
The Mexican victory

The victory represented a significant morale boost to the Mexican army and the Mexican people at large. The History Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_Channel) puts it this way:
"Although not a major strategic victory in the overall war against the French, Zaragoza's success at Puebla represented a great moral victory for the Mexican government."[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-16) And TIME (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_%28magazine%29) puts it this way:
"The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath."[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-time.com-17) "It was a glorious moment for Mexico." It helped establish a much-needed sense of national unity and patriotism.[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo#cite_note-mexonline.com-14)
Events after the Battle

The Mexican victory, however, was short-lived. Thirty thousand troops and a full year later, the French were able to depose the Mexican army, capture Mexico City, and establish Emperor Maximilian I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilian_I_of_Mexico) as ruler of Mexico.

You know the 5th of May is only really celebrated in one state of Mexico, and that it's only popular in the U.S.?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo

Sept 16th is their "Fourth of July".

Today is May 4th... "May the fourth be with you" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Day

Don't forget that it's my wife and I's 6th wedding anniversary! [LOL]

...We were going to Vegas at the end of May for our ceremony and just needed to sign the paperwork locally first to make it official. It was just going to be a random date until I realized that it could be 5/5/05... and easy number for me to remember. The fact that it was actually Cinco De Mayo was an afterthought but we tell people it's so we can celebrate our heritage which gets a good luck with our Mexican friends since we're about as white as they come.

P.S. My US flag flies every day so this won't be anything different as far as that goes.

Wonder if they know they are being used as tools - by Corporate Advertisers?
Does it bother them?

Cinco is such a sore spot for me. I'm Scottish by heritage and I don't fly that flag. I'm southern by birth and upbringing (good old southern boy) and I don't fly the stars and bars (outside of my recording studio that is). I fly the American flag every single day because, well, I'M A FRICKIN AMERICAN IN AMERICA. Geez. I don't have a problem with rednecks showing their stars and bars, at least it was American history, but seeing that Mexican flag waved around makes me want to expel the lot of them and watch how damn fast they come swimming back over the Rio. Love it or leave it - be proud of your heritage I say, but don't piss on America by honoring a foreign flag and having a U.S. holiday dedicated to that.

On the other hand, I also love America because we CAN do this silly crap, even if I personally don't like it.

The first weekend in May means one thing - and one thing only - Derby weekend! Now, if we can turn the 5th into a special day where idiots waving the Mexican flag have to race each other on a muddy track then I might have a bit more interest in it! :).

Didn't see a single Mexican flag today. At one point, I saw a guy wearing a white button up shirt (open) with a green undershirt, and I thought it was a Mexican flag. Phew, that was close.
