View Full Version : 7.62x54r
Hey guys I have a few questions. In colorado what is the magazine size in terms of hunting that are allowed? I am thinking about getting into hunting in the next year. Second of all I would be using a romanian psl. Has anyone ever hunted with this gun or a mosin nagant? The 7.62x54r is comparable to a 308 and 30-06 from what I have been able to find out. Will this caliber be capable for deer/elk?

I don't know the answer about round count, but 7.62x54R would be fine for elk.
I have considered my Romac 3 for an elk gun.

the 7.62x54R is capable of droping big game, but be aware of your choice of bullet, surplus FMJ rounds will perform very porly!!! please be an ethical hunter and select a round that will offer some expansion...
As mentioned you will need an expanding bullet but they are avaloable by several companies I think even wolf, it is also required by law

Yeah Wolf and Bear ammo's make soft point in 7.62x54R. You'd think with the popularity of the round, there would be some more choices (I've seen 7.62x39 hunting ammo so I know the bullets are out there lol).

Check out the game regs online. Last time I looked mag limit for a semi-auto was 5 rounds, but none listed for a bolt gun (I was checking due to my owning an Enfield .303 10-shot bolt gun), but rules can change.
Get good soft-point hunting ammo of at least 150 grains bullet weight (more if possible) and put it in the right place, and you'll do fine.

Colorado law states the max round cound count for a rifle is 5 rounds. This means your magazine can NOT hold more than 4 rounds. It has to be 4 rounds in the mag and one in the chamber. If you are using the PSL you have to modify the mag / block it so no more than 4 rounds will fit!! There are some expanding rounds for hunting with th 7.62x54 I have a few. They are close to 30-06 round and I have taken a deer or two with them. I hope this helps [Beer]

I've thought about doing this, but I'm affraid that long barrel would end up looking like a horseshoe. Long guns + horses + narrow treed trails = rifle that can shoot around corners.

I wish my fridge had a beer rack.
But really, I've been thinking of using my mosin for hunting too....I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Also, 7.62x54r soft point, look for Barnaul 203g. Not that its the best, but it is some that is available.
