View Full Version : Did my good dtun for the day
So I stopped at sev for poptarts and gatorade this morning, and a woman in front was trying to handle a quart of oil and the hood of her ford exploder at the same time.
asked if she needed help, and she said she needed a funnel to pour the oil.
a guy that walked up said stores like 7-11 usually have paper funnels for folks to use. So we went in and couldn't find any funnels for free, they had a plastic one for sale but she said it was too big. I told her in a pinch all she needs is a piece of cardboard or something to roll up.
the other guy asked her if it was for transmission fluid, she said no, just oil.
he replied you don't need a funnel for that, we all went out to the car and learned that she was trying to fill the oil thru the dipstick tube. she said she'd always done it that way.
so I held the hood and he poured the oil, put it 1/2 qt and checked it, still needed it so he poured the rest in, then all went our separate ways.
I felt a little silly for not getting more info first, and trying to help her find a funnel to fill the dipstick tube.
Haha I was at work one say and this women came in saying she needed a jump so I go out to help I get in the front seat and look and he car was somehow turned off but in drive. So I put it in park would you know it started of course after we spent 10 Mon trying to start it

That's awesome that you helped, I would have too. Please tell me you died laughing?!
Over the winter after one of the very small snow falls we had this year, I was at one of my customers shops and the shop kid had to go out and pick up some parts or something. He was in the shop truck, which was a REAR wheel drive Toyota pick up truck. The driveway was kind of steep so he was having a hard time getting out of the driveway, he just kept spinning the REAR wheels.
He gets out of the truck and comes stomping in, you could see the frustration on his face as he walks in and says "I cant get out of the driveway the tires just keep spinning" (we know this because we were all sitting there watching him). The manager says "go in back and grab the bucket of sand and throw it down in front of the tires, that should help you out". Kid goes in back and comes back out with the sand and a snow shovel. Cool smart kid he will remove some of the snow AND throw down some sand. Good for you kid, way to use your head, I thought to my self.
Back out side he starts shoveling the snow in front of the FRONT tires, ok, he'll get to the back...nope. Then he throws sand down in front of the FRONT tires, ok, he will definitely throw sand down in front of the rear tires....nope!!??!??? Throws the sand and shovel in the back of the truck and jumps in the drivers seat, slams that baby in drive.....and spins the tires like there is no tomorrow.....
We see him slam the thing in park and just out stompin his feet, eye brows furrowed and you could see the anger in his eyes. He busts open the front door and with as much anger as he could conjure up he says "its still fuckin stuck"........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my gosh, I was already laughing so hard, and then he comes in and says that. I laughed so hard that I actually popped a muscle in my back and I peed a little in my pants. I can even put into words how funny it was at the time and how hard I was laughing!!
I know I don't remember which one I put it in.
That's what he said
Now that's worthy of a signiture!!

Sad, but true...This could have been my wife. When we met 10 years ago, she was doing the exact same thing!

My ex-wife was smart enough to stay out from under the hood of the car..........
but not smart enough to tell me she drove around for 3 days with the battery "idiot light" on on her dash ........... then was confused when the car stopped running...........
also locked her keys in a running for at least half a dozen times.....
lets just say i didn't marry her for her mind.....
That's awesome that you helped, I would have too. Please tell me you died laughing?!
well I didn't laugh in front of her, but did chuckle a little in the car afterward.
lets just say i didn't marry her for her mind.....
I know why you did!

Mine did that last week at the King Soopers. She parked in the Fire Lane and got out to drop a movie at the RedBox and locked her keys, purse and cell phone in the car. $125 and an hour later, she was on her way.
Some days I really do wonder about her!
AAA Plus membership costs about that per year. 4 free services and up to 100 miles in towing. Just saying.

Gotta love OnStar. Just call the 1-800 number and they can unlock your car with a radio signal. Plus it saves $800 a year on my insurance and will call for help if I have a collision and I'm knocked unconscious.

This is one of the few things I break out the tin foil for, but I'll never buy a car with OnStar (which is ok cause I like older cars better anyway). The ability of a third party to control whether my car can start, to track it wherever it is, etc from some far away location doesn't sit well with me. And now with those new GMs that can be controlled with an iPhone app, i.e. via the internet... yeah no thanks. If there's a major SHTF scenario and the gov needs clear roads.... if a well-funded BG gets the notion to find a hacker to gain access to OnStar's system.... sure, its probably unlikely, but so is going to work and looking out the window and seeing a jet plane flying towards you.

The Cops and also contact OnStar and have them shut down your car.....
Tho of course this is advertised as a feature to stop an auto thief....
Agreed with it being a bit scarey.... tho not really.... tho kinda...
I guess if I did own one.. I'd learn how to disable all that crap .....maybe if easy enough... install a kill switch that just disables the onstar with the flip of a switch ..

Yes, this stuff is all great for its intended, or at least advertised use... but the line between using technology like this for stoping criminals and enabling them is a very thin one, and what happens when the people behind the computers become the criminals themselves.
In my years working as a mechanic I haven't had to repair any OnStar systems, but if they can start, stop, unlock, etc. I imagine the system is tied directly into, if not a part of, the car's computer, in which case disabling it wouldn't be possible.

Or they can tell that your OnStar system has been hacked, and void your warranty or shut down completely or something like that.

I've been looking into something similar with our insurance, given my wife does some pretty...uh....dumb things at times.
She once hit the curb (median area) just perfectly and it tore off the oil pan and she drove home that way. She couldn't understand why the engine seized...! Ugh. That was a $4,000 oopsie!

Too easy............................[ROFL1]
I used to see some good ones when I drove a tow truck. I dealt with 2 separate instances of gals that put tape over the check engine light and drove the car. One was a seized engine on US36 and the other was great- the gal told me that the engine just got really loud, went bang and started smoking. Funny how a connecting rod hanging out the side of a block will do that.
The first gal had driven the vehicle for just shy of a year with tape over the "idiot light".
"Idiot light"......................................riiiiiiiight !
reminds me of the woman looking for a 710.

Gotta love OnStar.
.
Well it never saved me a dime on insurance, and cost me almost $200 a year for 3 years, and never had to use it or call them for anything, so I canceled it.
One week after canceling I started getting all sorts of malfunction messages displayed on my dash, coincidence ?
My check engine light has been on since the day I bought my car, over 4 years ago.

My 4 quart motor is so gunked up with sludge, that when I add 4 quarts, I'm over by 1.5 quarts.

Best way to disable on-star is to remove the ability to recieve signals. ;) Can't carry out what it can't receive.[Coffee]
