Had one in my hands today for the first time. I have to say it is a pretty nice lightweight middy for a factory rifle. Anyone here own one or at least shot one, I figure it performs like all the other M&P15s i have shot. Never owned a Smith rifle but buddies have. Just wondering what peoples impressions of them were.

the rifle in question. (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_766300_-1_757785_757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y)

I had a M&P 15, good carbine. It was my favorite, untill I got my Ruger SR556.
I can reccommend one with clear conscience.

I know the quality of the parts, but I'm looking for an opinion of this specific model of the M&P15.

Looks nice. I have a T, an A3 model and the ORC. Love mine and considering getting another when their cheaper again.

Looks like a T except with the 1-7 twist and the MAGPUL gear. I guess Id prefer the T over this one, but that is just a perference.

I want a middy so much right now that I threw my Stag Model 8 on the for sale thread to see if I get any trade or sale offers. [LOL]

Okay...

I have a TS. Yes, I actually have TWO of them. One from the first production run they every did and one from the second production run. First off, they are NOT mid-length gas guns. They are carbine. I noticed that as soon as I got my first one. They are "over-gassed" but from what I hear that's the way S&W wants the guns so they don't get a bunch of returns due to people not being able to run weak ammo. I've got an H Buffer in one and an H2 buffer in the other and I'm still able to run weak reloads that I make.

I have about 5k rounds in the second one and 2500k in the other. Both without a single malfunction. I got one of my reloaded cases stuck in the chamber and the case rim broke off when I mortared the gun. I was able to tap the case out with a cleaning rod. I'm sure that was a poorly sized case. I don't think you can beat these for the money. Got each of mine for a tad over $1100 on the LE Discount. They both shoot sub 2 MOA with my 55gr reloads and 1.5 MOA with my 62gr reloads. I can count on 100% hits with 55gr factory ammo on a 2/3 size IPSC steel target at 300 yards. I have not had them out farther.

Here's a link to a write up I did on M4carbine.net when I got the first one. I plan on updating the writeup since I've made a lot of changes to the guns and put a few rounds down range with them.

So have you done the update? After reading your write up I have to say the only thing that makes me hesitant is the carbine length gas system, and the trx rail not lining up. Did the second run correct this? Seems like a nice light weight set up for a factory rifle.

I swear if you look at Smith's site you can see the gas block through the trx and it is too far forward for a carbine length. weird.

Yeah your right, that gas block is pretty far forward. It does look like a midlength.

The photo on s&w site is of a midlenth. When it went to production they went with a carbine gas system like you see in my photos. It must have been a cost of production issue and they stuck with what they were producing in all the other guns. It's a high quality gun.. no doubt. But its not a mid length. I'll update my photos and write up this weekend and let everyone know when I do...

The one I had in my hands at 5280 I'm pretty sure was a midlength. which was the one reason I got on this kick. I will have to head down there Sunday and clear this all up. lol.

Go check it out. There are many people presenting them as Mid-Length since the photo on the S&W site show it that way. Or you may have just got it in your head that it's a mid-length from the website and it stuck... Or they updated the production and actually changed. I would be surprised if they switched up and went mid-length and I'd be a little bummed that mine didn't get the update.

All that being said, my guns work just fine. I don't think they would work any better if they were a mid-length gas guns. They stay very clean and function 100%. If the one you see tomorrow/today is a carbine like mine and you really want a 14.5" barreled mid-length, then I would look at BCM. They should have what you want. The 14.5" barrel is worth the extra effort to get one. They are noticeably lighter and seem quicker to transition.

I've been looking at BCM midlength uppers. Their quality is known for sure. But my pocket book can't go that far for just and upper right now. I wish I knew when they will be taking orders for full rifles again.

There may be a little delay in getting the YouTube video linked. It's uploading as I type.
