I've been at work for almost two hours already. The only thing that hurts is my head, but only because I've just spent twenty minutes reading the thread about the 18 yr old with a shotgun in Aurora. Some of what is being said in there hurts my brain. I refuse to get sucked in to that whole argument. Kid did nothing illegal. Doesn't mean he has any ability to talk to someone without pissing them off, it just means that he didn't do anything illegal.

We've heard of Arthur Bryants, but I think they might be over hyped since the president went there.

Ah dang, didn't realize he went there. I knew he went to KC recently and did a BBQ thing, but never read what place he actually went to. Glad he didn't go to Jack Stack, otherwise I may have stopped going there [LOL]

Our Ninja Blender hasn't been blending in a while. Just took it apart and found the problem.

The star nut (so to speak) that transfers power from the base to the blender blades is reverse threaded (right loosey, lefty tighty) so that when the blender spins, it tightens up that nut instead of loosening it. However, they used super cheap/soft metal in the star nut so with enough use, it just stripped out the threads in the star nut. The threaded shaft was in excellent condition (appears to be stainless steel). [facepalm]

Called Ninja knowing they don't sell parts, but just wanted to ask anyways in case they just don't list them on their website. They don't. Wanted to sell me a new base for nearly $100.

Went to the garage, found my JB Weld, mixed some up and tossed it in the star nut, then tightened it back on. With any luck, I used enough JB Weld but not too much, and it'll lock the thing back together. If this doesn't work, we're tossing it in the trash and will buy a nicer blender later (my wife has used it for just over 2yrs and has made smoothies with frozen fruit nearly every day, so it has definitely served its purpose).

Irving
08-07-2014, 14:52
You don't think you can find a reverse nut somewhere?

BuffCyclist
08-07-2014, 14:56
It's not an actual nut, it's grey rubber that is molded over what looks like a potted metal disc with a blind hole in the center (the 6 spoke thing in the top of the unit below).

http://tribomb.com/reviews/ninja-kitchen-system-1200-blender/ninja-blender-base.jpg

Yes, I considered even throwing it on the CNC, machining out a hex pattern for a reverse thread nut (looked like 1/4"-20 but would find otu for sure) and then press fit the nut in. Or, drilling a hole through the shaft and putting a pin through it and the grey star nut. But either one would be quite difficult and take up a ton of my already precious time (working while trying to move out of our house because my pregnant wife can't do it since we're expecting our first child on 9/6).

eta: If it breaks again after my JB Weld fix, I may take a dremel to the sides of the threaded motor shaft to cut slots in the threads, then pack the grey star nut with plenty of JB Weld and try again with the thinking that the JB Weld will index in the slots and behave similar to keys.

I'm no mathematician and I may still need to run some numbers, but I'm pretty sure that 4.25qts of motor oil and 3qts of gear oil should not both fit into the same 5qt oil container.

And yet they did...

Did it drain the exact amount, or you basing it on new fluid amount?

BuffCyclist

It was based on new fluid amount.

Rear diff fluid level was pretty much even with the fill plug, motor oil had 5k on it, a bit much but not enough to eat 2qts worth.

Depends on the vehicle. My Amigo goes through a quart of oil about every 1,000 miles.

It was actually meant to be sarcasm but yes, I know that oil is a consumable. I normally get 3.5-3.75qts out of my xterra when I do an oil change, and thats once every 5k miles. I always change out the oil filter with a new one and only do oil changes when the oil is hot so it drains easier. My guess is the diff oil was lower than I thought, even though it looked to be at the top of the fill plug. Which really isn't surprising, I haven't changed it since I bought the vehicle new in 04.

Costco. Each 4'x8' rack can hold up to 600lbs and regularly costs $200, but I got them for $150 each on sale. The first one was a gift from my in-laws (trying to tell me something? lol) so I only have $300 and a few hours invested here. They should outlast the house and they are pretty sturdy.

I've been slaving away in the basement trying to rearrange things to make more storage room. By dumping some crappy large diy stands I had several pairs of speakers on, consolidating my gear racks, etc. I should have room in a few different locations for two 50 gallon water barrels, 7 more 84x36x24 and 4 more 84x36x18 rivetlock racks with 4-5 or more shelves each. I'm trying to get a hold of a guy that sells used racking to save some bucks instead of building shit from wood. Still kicking myself for not stockpiling more when I could have gotten my hands on more free when our business sold in 2003.

The big surprise was when I put together a worksheet to track preps as I do for all my "stuff" and calculated the per-calorie cost of MRE vs freeze dried bag-o-meal. I bought some of those $30 10 pack of Mountain House and they are TWICE the cost per calories as MRE's I get pretty cheap!

I'll be paying particular attention to the per-calorie costs when shopping for this stuff from now on. I needed to ramp it up, but the storage space presented a problem.

The impetus, among other reasons, was that we found out a few weeks back my son's live-in girlfriend is preggers and we'll soon be Grandparents. Assuming I'll now potentially have 6 mouths to feed (her 2 yo from another f_ckstick) instead of 2 or 3 if SHTF, I gotta get after it. We are sorely under-prepared.

Guys remember a few years ago when I posted up pictures of a PittBull puppy, then we only had her for three days?

Well, this dog is a keeper. Everything is great and she's a new part of the family. Plus, I've been running with her, and that is AWESOME. I don't know exactly how to train her up to running with me, as I'm sure that right now I have more endurance than her, but she's doing pretty well so far. Tonight she ran most of a mile with me at under 8 minutes. That's super fast for me.

EDIT: I just input all the info, and it appears the pace is actually near 8.5 min/per mile. Disappointed.

That's awesome Irving!

I tried doing that with mine, until she nearly killed me several times. She'd randomly stop to sniff something on the sidewalk, always directly in front of me. For the most part she was good though, tons of energy and helped me keep pace. I used keywords such as "lets go", "slow", "stop" and she was able to respond to them quite well. If she'd start bolting off, slow would get her to ease up a bit and focus on me.

I think so too!

Have 93.1 miles logged on my Vibram 5 Finger shoes. Bought them to try out barefoot running and I think its safe to say I pulled it off. Longest run in them was about 5 miles. As long as I get a little sprinting in, and don't do too much walking or standing around, they are pretty comfortable. Always have some blisters though if I don't run frequently, or I do a surprise long run. My next pair is going to have some tread though, so I can do mud runs.

Well. Shit. Here it is at 2:01 in the morning and I can't sleep. The mind just will not turn off, I just lay there thinking about work and how it sucks right now. Last night I was up too and updated my resume again, put out two applications, updated my profiles on various sights. A recruited called today and asked if she could send my info off to a dealer in Riverside, CA for a potential position there. I told her to go ahead but they will need to make a big offer and help with relocation. But, I don't want to go back to CA! I would have to divest myself of too many fine firearms to take up residence there again. Heck with that noise. Two places I applied for would have territories of IN, Oh and KY or, N. CA, NV, WA and OR. I would prefer yo stay in CO but my current job doesn't pay enough, haven't had a raise in over two years, boss says I am being paid market value and has refused to give me a raise. He just bought a motorhome that cost new what my foreclosed house sold for 10 years ago. Shit, shit, shit! Life sucks, then you die.

Oh well, my little rant is over. Say a prayer for me will ya? Thanks.

Get to spend the morning sitting in the dealership so they can dig inside my wife's vehicle to get a number off a part and then decide if that part is subject to the recall or not, even though they told me it was. Shouldn't they have this crap on file based on VINs? [Rant1]

My A/C went out in my truck, I started looking online to find a replacement and found out that it potentially was part of a re-call. Went to the stealership, and they said I had no re-calls on my truck :( Luckily it was just the condenser fan, cost me $60 and about 35 minutes.

Yes, but every other recall I've had done they have the parts in stock to fix the issue immediately. They are just getting the part number and then ordering parts. So it's not just one visit and wait for what they said 2-3hrs, it could be two.

Dodge kept sending me recall notices for the front end on my 2004.5 Ram.

I already bought and installed the "upgraded" 2008+ steering system. They included an option to apply for reimbursement for work already performed so I sent it in. We'll see what happens. Maybe I'll get a nice check from Dodge?

FWIW, I avoid most recall or TSB notices as often they are stupid shit I've already fixed myself or are just plain stupid. Case in point: *some* trucks were not going into park or slipping out of park into R (not mine). Their "fix" was to blast the horn if the truck was in R and the door opened. The only one I missed that I wish I had gotten - because I probably can't get it alone - was the one to allow idle control with the cruise buttons.

Aww, crap. By making fun of you, I just guaranteed I'll get a flat sometime soon in the rain! [LOL] However, I have a screw stuck in one of my Xterra tires, haven't been motivated enough to pull it out and see if its a puncture or just in the tread knob.

Later, he realized the tires were larger than OEM and therefore the system won't let him order the tires for my car, but if I bring them in, they can mount them no problem. Still have to order two more for the same car, wonder if he'll order them for me this time. And I'll probably wait until the end of Sept to buy them, just because I still have like 0.005" tread on the front tires and want to get that last little bit out of them. [Coffee]

Mrs. HB always just thought I was being a pain and I left it up to her to maintain her own bag for her own vehicle. In fact, I did have a poncho, several towels, and a raincoat in my Xterra, which were very handy when I arrived at the scene. :D
