View Full Version : umarex Mp5
Have any of you shot one or help one. What do you think about the? Any places local that have them?
I have heard that they are a lot better than the GSG plus they have full Hk markings on them. For the price of one, you might want to look into the Hk 416, 22lr version of their AR platform.
I really want the mp5 but want it local

I also was looking for one, because I'v heard horror stories about the GSG. 5280 armory has one for ya.. Looked at it yesterday. It's a lot heavier then the GSG and feels more sturdy!
Exactly what horror stories are you speaking of?

A buddy has the pistol version. Every time we shoot it every mag gets a FTF, or a FTE. May be the ammo. But I'v read that after a few hundread rounds the screws shake loose. And you need the "screw" mod. That and ATI has good customer service but is swomped by peoples issue's to get help is kinda hard now days.. This is mostly hear say but....

^ This. I had a GSG5. It was fun and fairly reliable for a .22lr, but built like a toy. Everything was held together with these soft screws that stripped easily unless you used their special tool. Even the take down 'pins' were these screw in screw things that stripped if you weren't careful. The first thing I did was the screw upgrade and got real HK take down pins. Even the receiver was held together with screws (clam shell design). I finally decided it wasn't my thing and sold it. The post lawsuit version may be built differently but I'm not interested in finding out.
The HK/Uramex .22lr may be interesting but I'm not buying one till I can touch it and look at the guts.

Please, once you get a chance check one out let me know your impressons. The one I felt and looked at was nicer IMO then the GSG..

This is an old thread, but figured I'd revive it. I was at LGS and saw the Umarex H&K MP5 22LR. Hate when that happens. Go in for a single purpose and get distracted by other things that "speak to me".

Wasn't a big fan of the retractable stock (pain to get a proper cheek weld on it) but was significantly more solid that the GSG First Anniversary edition I had (even though that one was nice and a lot of fun to shoot)
Swapping the stock to the more traditional MP5 stock appears easy to do.
Anyone kick the tires on these?
I've got one. Solid, well made and reliable. I love it. I agree the collapsible stock isn't the best to shoot with. It looks cool but isn't very functional. I bought the fixed stock for it. Much better. This one is a keeper.
I wouldn't mind picking up one of the "SD" models if I come across a good deal on one.

I have had one for about a year now and I love it. As others have said the cheek weld isn't the greatest, but for a cheap fun plinker I put up with it and it is still dead on accurate. You can get the fixed stock for it for around 75 bucks if it bothers you that much.
They have a nice solid feel compared to the GSG and have a nice heft to them. Nothing really feels cheap except for the stock, but the authentic MP5 retractable stock isn't really any better.
I have many thousands of rounds through it and just wipe down the inside and run a boresnake through it every 1k rounds or so and I have never had any issues with it.

I picked an SD model up for my wife 2 months ago at Sportsman's. It's a great plinker and my wife loves it more than her beloved P22. Only problem I've noticed is the sights won't adjust far enough to the left. I plan on mounting a small optic so that's not a big deal.
We put 6-700 rounds through it without an issue. Everything from mini-mags to super-x, to bulk remington and federal and it ate everything. They have an adjustable blowback spring so you can get it dialed in to cycle on just about anything.

I couldn't see through the sites unless I contorted my head. Not sure if the fixed stock would be much better, but the setup would be ideal for a red dot.
Good to know that this thing will eat bulk 22 ammo. I liked by GSG First Anniversary edition, but it was more particular about the ammo you fed it.

I've had one for about a month now and have about 700 rounds through it. I agree with most people who own them, the collapsable stock sucks and I don't really like the paint on it it seems really thin and easy to scratch but overall the rest of the gun is alot of fun. Everything is really well built. I got mine at Gander mountain for $500 but I should have check sportsmans because they have them for $450. Here's a pic of mine...

We went out shooting this morning and my wife's Umarex MP5 started shooting keyholes after about 100 rounds. It's only had 700 or 800 rounds through it.
We took it out shooting when we first got it and it shot great. The sites wouldn't adjust far enough left but it didn't bug us because I planned on mounting an optic. I took it apart and cleaned the whole thing thoroughly with Frog Lube. We finally got out shooting again today and put about 100 rounds through it to sight in the Eotech. Everything was going great. I told my wife she was set to start killing some zombie targets and I started prepping my AR. She fired a whole magazine and told me none hit the target.
I took it an fired a couple rounds, same issue. They were going everywhere. I walked in closer to the target and noticed the bullets were all over the place and most were hitting sideways.
What could have happened between sighting in and hanging a new target that would destroy the barrel?
I was very happy with this gun until now.

Different ammo ? Slower/faster or heavier/lighter weight bullet than the first times ?

We primarily ran Minimags to break it in and then ran some Rem Thunderbolts, Win Super X and Federal bulk the first time we shot it. Yesterday it was running fine on the Thunderbolts when it started getting getting screwy. We changed to Minimags and it was doing the same thing.

I guess I should update this. I broke down the rifle and noticed the barrel was caked with lead. In my opinion that's unacceptable for less than 1000 rounds. I called Umarex before doing anything in case they wanted it "dirty" to look at it. The CS agent told me to clean the barrel good and try different ammo. I explained the whole situation to him and he still said the clean the barrel. I told him it was going to take a ton of work to clean the barrel and it may get messed up trying to push all the lead out. He assured me it would be fine and to shoot it more after it's clean and see if it leads up again.
I took the whole upper apart and pulled the barrel. I've surprised it was shooting at all with all the lead in it. I ended up having to pound a cleaning rod through it to get out the lead. There was basically a whole .22lr bullet worth of buildup in there. After countless passes with a brush and solvent patches it started to look clean. After a few more passes I was satisfied and reassembled the gun.
We finally got a chance to shoot it last weekend and used only 40gr Mini Mags. After a couple hundred more rounds the barrel looked alright. I put the bore snake through it to clean out the burnt powder but I'm not going to clean it until it gets over 1000 Mini Mags through it. I'm starting to think the Rem. Thunderbolts are just garbage.
Also it shoots great again after cleaning it. It's no tack driver but with a red dot at 35 yards it's a hoot to shoot.
I'm starting to think the Rem. Thunderbolts are just garbage.
You're not too far off. Thunderbolts are known for leading up barrels. Use copper washed or quality wax coated ammo. I've used thousands of rounds of CCI blazers in my umarex mp5, and other .22s, and never had lead build up issues.
Bought one at Big 5 in Westminster last week and they had another one at that time. Good Luck
Expectations. It shoots many rounds quickly and (fun) accurately. Not loud, not abbusive, compact with the retractable and easy to live with. The retractable takes some getting used to in LOP. I was looking at a 10/22 takedown but went with the MP5/22 and dont regret it a bit. I think it is as almost as packable as the 10/22, slightly heavier. 0 malfuntions with the first few hundred rounds of CCI. I expected it to be fun and it is. With an HK stamp on it I expected it to be well put together, and I think it is. I like it.
The problem: Finding one

Just put another 525 rounds through mine today, with zero issues. The "special" optic rail is back in stock at HKparts and I have a new Eotech 512 ordered for it as well. I changed out the collapsible stock to the fixed A2 from day one, and added a Urban ERT sling. Even out of the box, I'm hitting 100 yards consistently with just the irons. I'll have pics soon, once I get it all in and mounted.

Zeroed the EOtech today at about 50 yards. Hits 100 yard steel all day long. Even hits the 160 yards steel pretty consistantly. Multiple targets under 50 yards can be hit as quick as you can put the dot on target and pull the trigger. Put another 360+ rounds through it today. Had to spray out the chamber and barrel once with brake cleaner mid ways thru for the first round to chamber in the mag. As I was using somewhat dated American Eagle ammo, I'm sure that didn't help. After that, it chomped thru everything else. All in all, the best time I've had on the range in awhile...
