View Full Version : Anyone have a vintage car???

I have a 1965 Mustang Fastback project I'm just starting. It was actually my wife's first car. Bought it back from her ex-husband. Before I start on the restoration I want to have it put on a frame rack and checked out for straightness. Then I want to have a new drivers side floor pan welded in. Can anyone recommend a good shop in the Colorado Springs area I can take it to?
Broadsword
I can't recommend a shop, but if it's running and driveable, I'll recommend keeping it that way as long as possible! I'm restoring a '56 Willys Jeep and I wish to God I'd left it all together so I could have enjoyed it the last 5 years instead of shuffling parts around. They come apart much easier than they go back together, I'll tell ya that. I'd rather be driving a beater than dreaming about driving a prizewinner.
I gots a '94 Ranger.

to check the frame I would recommend Mikes frame and alignment, he does a great job and he is a Mustang guy. Just curious, but was the car wrecked? why do you think the frame/unibody might have issues?
I have had many many mustangs in the past 10yrs, the one I have now is a 95 gt. Its got a 392 stroker, AFR heads, Trick flow TFS-R intake, tremec 5spd trans, 150 shot NOS. lots more. Its pretty fun :)
this is mine. . . .not really vintage (titled as a 2005)

There are a couple guys that specialize in mustangs. CO mustangs in Aurora, there's a guy in Denver 1/2 mile north of 5280 Armory that does just mustangs. . . .
there are more, but those are the 2 close to me I know of

I have a 69 442 and cannot remember if Jack's Alignment (http://www.jacksalignment.com/services.html) does frame stuff or not. It has been a while since I lived in the Springs.
When I had my 70 Chevelle Jack's was the only place I took it to for alignments.

The wife told me she did have a disagreement with a guargrail back in the day with it and the motor looks to me like it sits a litle to far to the passenger side. Thats why I suspect some frame damage. She wants this car done right and we are both finally in a place financially where we can make that happen so we're going to go for it.

With a Mustang being of Uni-Body construction ensuring that the "frame" is square is even more critical than with a full ladder framed car such as a Chevelle. What most folks don't realize is when a unibody chassis takes a hit it will dissipate the energy through the entire structure. I have seen unibodies take a hit to the left front and welds in the right rear are popped/broken.
Any COMPETENT body shop with a Blackhawk or LaserLiner frame machine will be able to check it out. A fairly simple process-the vehicle is placed and blocked on the machine. Once a datum(centerline) is established then a framework with locating pins is lined up to key points on the chassis. Any deviation from these pins denotes a framework that is not square. I think the tolerance range is 2 or 3 millimeters.
Unless you have a solid, square baseline to build on then everything else will be a waste of time and money.
I was building up a 68 Nova until I built my shop and had to dedicate the room for the shop-sold the Nova to finance the shop. BIL has a 69 Fastback that will become an "Eleanor" clone, 68 Hi Country Special, 67 Fairlane ragtop and 68 Cougar with 58K original miles. The other BIL has a 69 Cougar ragtop.

Dad bought it new in 1968, been in the family since day 1 (though Dad died in 1981). As you can see, it needs a lot of work.
Maybe some day I'll quit spending all my disposable $$ on guns and buy some sheetmetal for Ol' Red.
As for frame shops in COS, I don't have a clue. There are some hot rod shops around town that might be able to give you some leads.

It is no longer 25 years. it is 1975 or vehicles that were grandfathered as long as you do not let the plate lapse. In other words if I let the plates on my 76 Trans Am default it is no longer eligible for the collector plates. My 2+2 was eligible in 2010 and when I went to go get them they said no.

That is cool. So is the big lathe behind it...........
Don't know of any shops but I have a 65 mustang more restomoded than restored. I have some extra parts laying around if you need some during your build.
I am driving my 66 coupe that I just dropped a 302 into. I love it and I am having very few problems with it too. The drive shaft vibrates when I hit 70 mph and I think the old rear end may out live us all. But its never really had power to it either so it maybe newish.
The floor pan should be bought first so the guy welding can cut out just what he needs and nothing else. It shouldn't take five years to do though. It can be cut and rewelded in a weekend and back on the road by monday. Just make sure to seal it up really good. The seams and the exposed metal. That way rust won't be an issue for a long time. A mud flap of some sort will keep all the salt off the floor pan too.
That is cool. So is the big lathe behind it...........
You're the second person to notice and comment on that lathe. That thing is huge. I think he said it was from the 30's but I don't remember.
Here is the other picture I took that day. Garage full of these.

Lathe isn't THAT big, it looks like an old Southbend. Timeframe of the 30's is about right.
I used to run a BIG lathe- 3' swing and 15' long bed for BIG pump shafts. Chips it threw were about an inch square and 1/8" thick! Get one of those hot blue bastards down you shirt! "So you think you can dance" aint got nuthin on what you do when that happens!

The reason was simple. How many 1980-86 clapped out POS everything including minivans have you seen with the welfare mom and collector plates?
I saw a rusted out Chevrolet Celebrity wagon 83-84 or so with collector plates on it.
I think there should have been a panel of people from the car clubs to pick the cars that were eligible for the plates. Like I said my 76 TA is grandfathered but heven help me if I forget.
The MC SS, the GN's and many more true "collector cars" will not be eligible down the road.
The wife told me she did have a disagreement with a guargrail back in the day with it and the motor looks to me like it sits a litle to far to the passenger side. The engine sitting a little to the right side of the engine bay is normal. It was done purposely. I believe it has something to do with drive train geometry.
This is my older brothers' '34 Ford coupe. He's not a member here, but he has an AR15.....
He's had this car since 1960, has a 1961 401 Buick engine in it, Chevy 4-sp. trans., dual AFB's, etc. Done all the work himself except paint and interior, lots of handmade parts, junkyard parts, and adapting things to make 'em work. I doubt there's ANY parts on it that came out of a catalog, he don't play that. He bought it in '60 from a little old lady, it was an original car with the flathead V8, running and driveable. Doesn't have a speck of bondo on it anywhere.
A true streetrod, IMO.

Nice lookin' rides out there guys! Probably a good thing I don't live in a place with lots of room and a big shop, or I'd have hooptys up on blocks all over the place. This is the 1956 Willys CJ5 I'm restoring, I've put up photos here before. Closest thing to a "vintage automobile" I'll likely ever have.

Nice. Is that a Kawasaki Drifter sitting next to it on the skid? I have had my old jeep for about 10 years now. Has never failed me to start. It isn't as good in the winter as I had hoped. I had in in the sand in AZ, was great there.
I have a 66 VW registered as a collector car. It was nice to pay for 5 years of registration at once and not need smog testing. That was worth it by itself.
Well, yeah! Now that ya mention it. Poor thing probably didn't have 20 hours on it, just sat there and rotted. Not much snow in OK.

There are probably 10 more finished ones there as well. Well, I don't know how many he has. I was under the impression that he's been rebuilding them from piles of dust for as long as I can remember, but I don't know how many he actually has still.
I followed a 1969 Triumph to work today. I assume it was a 1969 because the plates said Sweet69.

It was a new law that the last democrap put out where if you are late reregistering your car there is a $25 a month "fee" against you for every month and it goes for cars and trailers that you might not drive a whole lot.
Hence the reason I'll never sell it. I couldn't stand to see something this old and this original get bastardized.
That's just a platform to expand to me. No sense in keeping the old underpowered engine in there when you could upgrade into something that you might want to drive around. Hence the reason it sits and remains un used.

Oh... that fee!
Didn't CO change the way fee's were calculated for vehicles sold via private party? I know in the past you can put $1/10/100 or gift and they will tax you based on the sale price. I thought they changed that to be taxed on the original taxable value. Meaning that classic cars will be dirt cheap. Can someone confirm?

No need to fuck with me over what I want to do with MY Jeep! You want to drop an overpowered engine into a dinky vehicle with a short, narrow wheelbase that's known to be squirrely at high speeds, go right ahead.
It sits because I'm restoring it to original 1956 showroom condition. When it's done, I plan to drive it on every trail in this state I can find the time to! It's only going to be for mild scenic trails, no rock crawling or mud bogging for me. So the original 4-banger will be plenty of engine, I have no need for speed. And it WILL be driven!

Its your car do what you want with it. I wasn't trying to tell you what to do but simply saying what I would do if I had it. Your not doing it any justice just letting it sit there.
I sat on my Mustang for 7 years before I started driving it and during the 8th year it was on the tire 6 banger that it came with. After a while I put a v8 in it and I just wondered what I was waiting for all that time. Now that was my plan for my car and it worked out great for me. Yours is different but your not getting any younger and saying you will get to it later my sound like a plan now but its not. Good luck with your project they are a lot of fun and a good way to spend money.

Jeeps should be reliable as hell ... that original 4 should outlast you and me both combined. Which motor is in it? Is it the Hurricane?
I still don't understand the point of V8s in jeeps unless you're hill climbing or mud drag racing, otherwise its a good way to end up with your ass pointing in the wrong direction and things you can't fix gettin' broke :p

Well, a Mustang's a different story, more hp there would definitely be a good thing. My old Willys was meant to putt and chug, so putt and chug it shall be. It was Dad's old hunting Jeep and he rarely used it, it always ran good though. Only real "upgrades" I'm doing are far better brakes, 12v electrics, electronic ignition, a later D30 front axle and later type steering. "Maybe" a better carb if the old one gives me grief. Oh, and a heater! [Tooth] But fast ain't in the plans.
Yep, Hurricane. And the only thing I want to break when I'm on the trails with it is the seal on a cold beer at the campsite!
Well, a Mustang's a different story, more hp there would definitely be a good thing. My old Willys was meant to putt and chug, so putt and chug it shall be. It was Dad's old hunting Jeep and he rarely used it, it always ran good though. That is a respectable and fun sounding plan. I once new a guy who thought jeeps were useless since they didn't come with AC but now I know they didn't even have heaters for time. That is a new one for sure.

Those Metropolitan are cute. and have a bit of a cult following here in Colorado. My girls BFF bought one for $200 off the side of the road drove it home and her and her husband have been restoring it ever since. She said it has everything but the key sticking out of the trunk.
anyone going to 5280 Armory's 1st annual car show on the 18th?
18th is a Cruisin Havana in Aurora.
Where is everyone insuring their cars at? I am using Hagerty

Interesting. When my buddy opened a mechanic shop across the lot from them, they used to bitch about all the cars showing up for shows.

Looking for cheaper insurance for my old jeep. Hagerty treat you well?

So far they've been awesome. I was tossed up between Hagerty or Grundy, Hagerty was able to setup a policy that day for me and get me covered with a binder where Grundy kinda just ignored me. Well i got a call after Hagerty called with a binder for 30 days of coverage.
I've heard Grundy is a little cheaper, both are about the same. But I only pay $242/year and its guaranteed $25k coverage.
