So I am trying to decide which 50 BMG to buy. I really like the EDM Windrunner and the Berrett 82A1. What I really love about the EDM is that it breaks down to such a small package and is relativity light. The Berrett is semi auto and I have used them in the past. Any recommendations on which one to go with and for what reason.

personally i owned the Armarlite AR50.
But, I would take the windrunner. more accurate.
which is cooler is debateable. because they are both pretty cool.

That is another reason why I am leaning towards the windrunner.

I do ♥ you two...
but I love my Barrett...
Don't be jealous boys..
What? A gun related post in the GD section? Sacrilege! Burn him!
Kidding. Unfortunately, I have nothing constructive to add to the discussion.

That's ok, neither do we.
I own an 82 and like it. Fun toy.
I have shot several different Windrunners. Cool, but not my cup of tea. If you want an accurate bolt gun, get a McMillan. Did I just recommend someone spend money with McMillan? I must be sick or something.

Barrett has the cool factor and all, but with the EDM you could just tell the kids you have a Cheytac which is cooler... which, with EDM's new barrel shroud bipod system thing that eliminates their old receiver mount bipod, you basically do.
EDM breaks down easier and faster than the Barrett, and into a smaller package. Also more accurate. Sure, it doesn't have the rate of fire of a semi auto Barrett, but with .50BMG you'll only be able to shoot about as fast (accurately) as a bolt action with a skilled shooter behind it anyway... it ain't like you're gonna be trying to rapid fire it or anything (ok, that does sound kinda fun...). Not to mention its cheaper than a Barrett. Also, with the EDM you can get caliber conversions for .408 and .338LM, only takes a minute or so to swap the parts (barrel, bolt, magazine) and you've got a new rifle for a fraction of the cost (couple grand per kit... not cheap, but cheaper than a new rifle).
I vote Windrunner.

The new barrel shroud on the EDM is pretty Bad Ass. I like it a lot better then the bipod on the frame. I never thought about a Cheytec. Do they make them in 50BMG?

The EDM Windrunner, or the EDM XM408 rather, is essentially a Cheytac. My understanding is that EDM made the original M200s for Cheytac until they switched to a different shop, or that Cheytac bought the design for EDM, or something... lots of different stories floating around the interwebs. Basically though, the EDM IS a Cheytac Intervention, the only difference I know of other than the producer is that the Cheytac has the bipod mount to a barrel shroud that put the weight in the shooter's hand and thus was supposed to be slightly more accurate than the EDM because it stabilized the gun better than the EDM's reciever-mounted bipod that was further back... but, with EDM's new barrel shroud, there really is no difference (I think the Cheytac has a 0.5" longer barrel and a different muzzle brake). Also, I've heard from nearly everybody I've talked to with a Cheytac that their customer service is crap, and recently I heard they're no longer in business (although their website is still up and running)... on the flip side, I've heard nothing but great things about EDM's customer service.
The Cheytac M200 is NOT available in .50BMG. It IS available in more calibers than the EDM (including .375), but to my knowledge they don't sell caliber conversion kits like EDM does so you have to actually buy another rifle.
Somebody who knows more about this should be along shortly to correct everything I just said.

I am really leaning towards the EDM. From someone that owns a EDM is the recoil management hard? I know a Barrett kicks like a kitten. I have shot that Standing off hand at 600. Not sure I could do that with a 50BMG bolt gun.

The muzzle brake makes all the difference. Their standard 80 hole brake is ok, recoils a good bit less than an M99... I've heard great things about the Serbu Shark brake, people say with that one it's softer than an M82 which is pretty damn awesome.

Is it possible to put a muzzle brake on the EDM that will allow the use of a suppressor? I am really hoping to hear from someone that has a EDM.

Are you looking for a muzzle brake that can accept a suppressor directly onto it like Surefire's stuff or a suppressor designed to fit over a muzzle brake like the ARIES system?
If the brake isn't necessary, the one on the EDM is threaded and you can remove it and put a suppressor in its place. AWC makes a great one for the .50 that will thread on.

I used a McMillan bolt gun that held one round in a little live fire exercise some years back when I was in SF. Great gun. It was the one where you removed the bolt and placed the round in the bolt face like a shell holder on a reloading press. We got a bunch of whatever we could get at the time since the army hadn't adopted anything at that point.
I worked for Barrett for a little while and he's a great guy, but I don't really care for the model 82. I owned a model 99 and loved it, but sold it off for a crazy price right after Obama got elected.
Other than the one McMillan and the Barrett models 82, 95, and 99 I've yet to play with any of the others. Most of them I've never even seen. I really do like the EDM Windrunner though I doubt that I'll ever get another .50. Not that I have anything against them though.
As for recoil, even the bolt guns have very little recoil. If you can hold it up and steady at the same time then you can shoot it offhand. If you can handle a 12 gauge then you can handle a bolt action .50.
