Will be in a position to buy my 1st AK next month and was wondering if they are available for lefties.

I shoot rifles lefty, and have shot AKs (own a couple, but one's a pistol- doesn't count)
I'm right handed... but left eye dominate, so I've tried them with both hands...

In some ways, an AK is easier to operate left handed... once you get past the shells flying under your nose, the only non-ambi feature is the charging handle... the safety isn't ergo with either position, IMHO...

and left handed charging handles (and top covers) are available... I never bothered, because I found it easy to work with either hand- either support the rifle with the pistol grip, while using your right hand to work the charging handle and/or mag changes... but then I'm right handed

Nyet. All comrades are right handed. We do not allow left handed people to serwive. All must conform.

there's a clip on ejection port buffer that some companies sell so maybe it would make the empties fly a little farther from your chin ;)

I shoot lefty and AK's toss brass far enough to the side that it's not an issue. I can keep my left hand on the pistol grip and change mags and charge with my right if I'm rapid firing.

Do not get a bullpup! The brass is coming out way too close. I shot 3 or 4 rounds out of someone's bullpupped AR type rifle and most hit me right in the face. I think and AK is fine for lefties. Some Russian type tactical scopes for them are on left of center so they are easy to use.

Doh...misread the title.

Isn't a left handed AK a lot like a left handed hammer?

Depends what round you want to shoot. 7.62x39 or 5.45x39?

not to bash anyone here but their price on those bolt carriers is outragous. if people are actually paying 250 bucks for a bolt carrier with a charge handle welded on the left side then i need to buy all the 100 dollar kits i can, weld charge handles on the left side, re park them then sell off all the parts in the kits lol either way with you want a charge handle on the left side i know for a fact you could find a local shop to do it much cheaper than 250 bucks, better yet find a friend who welds to "help" you do it. also even a monkey with a dremel could modify the top cover to work with one of those left side charge handles. i say run an ak like an ak with practice you wont see the point of a left side charge handle that needs an opening large enough for the sahara desert to blow in the receiver. sorry just my opinion [Tooth]

I shoot left handed but have avoided left handed rifles. 99% + of all the rifles out there are right handed and I want to be able to pick one up and shoot it. If I got used to left handed it would be awkward to switch. I know it is clumsy shooting right handed rifles but I manage. Bolt actions are weird but I got used to it.

i could do this. years ago in CA while hooking up with a few ar15 members for a shoot while i was visiting. I met the guy who was doing these back then 6-7 years ago. This (Not to bash the vendor) is another idea posted on the web and some one ran wht. A good example is the AK tactical mag release lever. Some guy on the web posted a do it yourself pictorial on what he did, a mag release with 1 tab off each side for your index finger to come in contact with. Now some vendor sells them for $6-7.00 each. I have )somewhere) an amd i might try this with, only using a SKS charging handle.
YMMV

Jim, once you "find" your amd haha you should use a fal charge handle for the left side and make it non-reciprocating ;) then that would be worth having a left side charge handle.

+1

I bought a couple lefty bolt guns in the last few years and sold them both. I guess almost 40 years of shooting right handed rifles left-handed (left eye dominant) has created an unbreakable habit.

The only rifle I own that is lefty is my bolt gun. I can also switch to a right handed bolt gun easily. As far as lefty AK's, don't waste the money.

And how you're gonna make it to eject to the left?

It doesn't. It would still eject to the right but the charging handle would be on the left.

The only way to get it to eject to the left would be to make new rails and weld them on the opposite sides of the receiver, and create a new bolt and carrier.

It would probably sell if a company with the ability to machine the bolt/carrier would make them.

Making the ejector on the right side would be the easy part, getting the bolt/carrier wouldn't......
