ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an 11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag. (http://www.wwlp.com/dpp/news/local/franklin/11-year-old-speaks-on-flag-controversy)
The family of Frankie Girard (http://www.wwlp.com/search/SERP?q=Frankie+Girard&t=web&submit=Search&s=wwlp.com&o=relevance&google_web=google) is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.
The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girard’s father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.
"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there,” Girard said.
So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.
According to his father, the teacher told Frankie that his drawing of the American Flag would offend one of his classmates. "We’re allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but we’re denying Franklin those same rights," Girard said.
22News tried to contact the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn't hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture. In a statement he said: "Each of our schools flies the American Flag every day. At the Butterfield School, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by students and staff. And the other schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once per week."

Not surprised since people are turning in to such doucherockets...

This is becoming WAY too common. I'm sick of hearing about how people aren't allowing even CHILDREN to be proud of who/what they are. Unless, of course, if they're muslim, wiccan, satanist, liberal, homosexual, anything other than being American or being Christian.

Sounds like there could be something more.
There is a chance the kid doodled a flag during math class when he was supposed to be doing multiplication tables and cried when the teacher wouldn't hang it on the proverbial fridge. If that is the case, just b/c it is a flag doesn't mean the kid has a free pass to attention whore land. The heresay should be considered innocent until proven guilty. For all you know, parents are concocting some back story to get free social welfare (lawsuit).

According to his father,
According to his father,
According to his father,

His father was not there. This does not make this truth. This makes it wild allegation. Maybe true, maybe outright BS.
I've got to side with fox on this one. If the kid was supposed to be doing other work and instead was doodling the flag, letting the kid put his drawing up would only be supporting and rewarding his bad behavior. The kid is supposed to be learning and doing his work, not coloring. To the teacher it wasn't about being proud of who you are, or supporting our nation, it was about the kid not doing what he was supposed to be doing. The parents of course came in and blew the whole thing out of the water. I wouldn't let my kids disobey me like that. "No dad, I didn't clean my room, or do my chores because I was coloring a flag". That is just stupid (the excuse, not the coloring of the flag). Yet alone reward them for doing it. There is a time and place for coloring, I don't think when that kid sketched out a flag was one of them.

Agreed. If he should have been doing other work, regardless of what it was, I'm with the school. That sounds like the case.

On the other hand, if the failure to allow the kid to post his drawing was motivated by political correctness, that's different and should be dealt with.

This is a classic case of two sides of the story and the truth.

Ya, but in this case, it is the side of a teacher, and the side of a little kid who may or may not have lied about what really happened to his parents. I can't believe this story got so much press...

If you don't love it leave it... Merle had it right. Too bad hippies and libtards don't listen to country music...

Perhaps I should modify the thread title to : Nuke Massachusetts because they're all a bunch of dumbasses...

Personally, reading the article, I got the impression that this was an ART class, and drawing was the lesson, but the kid strayed from the assigned subject. Regardless, if the reason he was not allowed to display his work is because another student might be offended by the US flag, someone has some 'splainin to do...

So my take on this is that if he did not complete the assigned work then he should not be allowed to display his work no matter what was drawn. Simply because in displaying it you are rewarding someone for not following the rules.
However, to say that the flag may offend another student is just play dumb! If offended by the US Flag please return to your country of origin, or if your ‘momma’ came here just to pop you out please return to her country of origin.
I say let’s investigate the citizenship of the offended pupil and parents and ship them back to wherever they came from!
Also give the teacher a slap for being stupid!

Although he wasn't doing his work the teacher could have told him that if he wanted the flag hung then he would have to finish his work first. Then everybody would be happy but the teacher instead told him that it might offend other students! Give me a break if someone is offended by it then why are they in this country? Pride is part of being American and our flag is one of the ways to show it.[Rant1][Rant2]

The flag thing is according to the father, that is what his son told him...
