View Full Version : Need opinions on low budget 9mms
Thinking about picking up a couple of handguns (preferably in 9mm) that can be left in a vehicle without causing me too much worry. In other words, I want to leave them in there full-time and if something were to happen and they were stolen I wouldn't be without my favorite handgun or be out a ton of money. Anyways, my criteria are it has to be relatively inexpensive, be in a caliber no smaller than 9mm, and be a reliable weapon. New or used is OK. Revolvers or semi-auto are OK. Maybe something by Kel-Tec? Maybe some kind of surplus handgun? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.
I have a Kel-Tec PF9 that I picked up for roughly $300 new and I've been really happy with it. It's small and lightweight, but it's single stack...if you want a double, look at the P-11. Or you could go the used route, and probably find something in that price range as well.

Keltec Sub2000 can be had brand new for just over $300 as well.

Hi Points can had for way less than your $300 limit, and be in .45 ACP.
They also meet all of the criteria in your post.
Thanks for the replies so far. I'll pass on the Sub2000 as it might be difficult to deploy from inside the vehicle. I'm also going to pass on the Hi-Point because I think they are the absolute ugliest handgun ever produced. I know it really doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it's cheap and reliable but everyone has their limits on what they will or won't own. Thanks again.

For what it's worth, my original post didn't say anything about a $300 limit. But really that would probably be on the high end of what I would spend since I probably need at least two pistols for two separate vehicles. Maybe I could find a couple of used P-series Rugers or S&W Sigmas for around that price?

Someone Said Ruger P?

reliable, 9mm, inexpensive.
As it is a confiscated weapon have it looked at by a gunsmith before firing it.

That's what I had in mind. Thanks for the link. [Awesom]

You can't beat that price for a reliable 38 special.

Check out Jensen Arms up your way in Loveland. They usually have some pretty decent and not terribly expensive police turn in's from S&W. I picked up a Sig Sauer P6/P225 in 9mm for around $225.00 awhile back.

P series 89 or later, they're gigantic boat anchors, but solid and stainless steel throughout so rust isn't as big of an issue.
I've seen used ones for as little as 200, contact online dealers like JG sales and sometimes CDNN has them in stock - but you have to call on price.
I'd suggest you dont get something just because it's cheap, the ONLY thing more horrifying than having your mother walk in on you with your girlfriend - would have to be
"click......." (((ominous silence)))
Anything less and you might as well just leave an axe in your car - hey, I do that already (Big 5 has cheap ones)
Barring THAT, you might want to look at the 9mm short (9x18) guns out of the commbloc countries, like the tokarev. Can be had for 125 for a decent one.

Any of the P series. We have a P85 that is just getting broken in. 1996 model. Even the wife with small hands has no problem shooting it.

I Keep a KP944 (P94 in Stainless) in the bedroom as the backup "AW SHIT" Gun.
+1 to Wife being OK with the p94. She actually prefers it to the SA XD because of the Hogue.

Used S&W 5906, 5904, etc can be had via CDNN Investments for less than $300. Also avail via Gunbroker at the same price. Right around $300. Same with a police trade in used S&W 66.

you could get a cz82 for around 200 bucks and have it shipped to your house if you have a c&r ;) some are being sold with a new us .380 barrel but that's a shame as the original 9x18 is polygonal rifled. just an outside the box idea.....hey it's 9mm haha

Am I the only one who is bothered by the carelessness of the OP?
Are you going to at least make some effort of securing it?
I just don't like the thought of stolen guns.

Just don't load 9mm bullets in it. (.356). I do use cut down 9mm lugar brass in my maks and once it has been fired once it is great.
I do have to be very careful sorting brass to load. If the wife is shooting a fun match that she will not get it back I use brass.
Out at the range I use nickle in the mak and brass in the 9mm to keep them straight. [Beer] I do need to pick up an 82.

Sorry. I didn't mean to come across as careless. It was not my intent that I was going to be careless in any way. It was just my intent that no matter how careful a person is sometimes things happen that are beyond that persons control. Just because a handgun is locked in a console or glove box in side of a locked vehicle parked in a relatively safe location doesn't mean you will necessarily return to find your vehicle and all of its contents exactly as you left them. While nothing like this has ever happened to me and I take all reasonable precautions to keep everything I own secured, especially firearms, you just never know. I would just hate to leave one of my favorite handguns locked away in my vehicle and come back to find it missing. If I had something that didn't cost me a weeks pay that I really didn't have a lot of pride of ownership in then I would at least sleep a little better at night. Well, probably not.... I would be too worried about who might be doing what with that firearm.
Again, please don't read this post as "I am looking for a throw away gun that I can be irresponsible with". That is definitely not the case.

i know it's not a 9mm or larger, however you could score 2 Bersa's in .380 and run hydra-shoks

Very true. If you're looking for a cheaper 9mm, you can look at the Stars, Bersas, Taurus, Llama. They'll all pretty much do the same job in the end- if you break them in and function-check the ammo you choose to keep in it for defense- and keep it clean.

virtually indestructible (milled)
Makarov
Look at the Bersa BP9mm CC Used ones can be found for under $350

I don't know what they go for now but my car gun is a Ruger LC9. Fits in the center console nicely and I won't cry if it disappears.

59 or 69 series S&W's are usually found for a good price. They were noteworthy for their extreme reliability not so much for the accuracy. But they do well enough for a carry gun.
