I tried searching but didnt find exactly what I'm looking for.

I want to go do some camping this coming Memorial weekend and want to head out to Pawnee somewhere.

Can you camp there? And more importantly can you have camp fires there?

If so, where can I go for this?

Thanks

I just had a friend take his kids camping at Pawnee this weekend. I can ask him for you.

Al-x please let me know what you find out.

Gunner you are welcome to join us if we find a place.

Probably the most important thing that I didnt mention before, because I just thought it went without saying, is I WILL be doing A LOT of shooting so somewhere away from everyone else is needed.

Thanks folks

I might have to pack up the bivvy and join you. Camping and lots of shooting sounds like a good weekend to me.

Camping and lots of shooting

This pretty much sums it up. More like SHOOTING, and sleeping then MORE shooting, then some sleeping!!

Your welcome to join pal! I just hope we can find something that fits this bill.

they do have a designated campground there, with picnic tables and firepits. It's in the SE corner of unit? 88 maybe. My maps are at home, sorry I should know this but obviously I don't remember. Whatever the closest unit is to Denver, the campground is in the SE corner of that unit.

I believe you should be able to camp anywhere on public land out there, but I'm sure there would be restrictions on open fires.

Thanks Robb, yeah I saw the stuff on the "camp sites" I am not looking to go camping at a designated camp site. I dont like being around a bunch of other(non shooters) people. I want to be able to roll out of the tent in the morning and start shooting!!

I would(and usually do) go camping up in the mountains but there is still a ton of snow up there right now.

Thanks

This.. Check with the Grasslands office in Greeley about the fires.

The only official campground that I know of, is Crow Valley CG. Just north of Briggsdale, on CR 77.

My friend said that if you go to the "open camping", then yes, you can shoot. Or people had been shooting there before. I asked him where the "open camping" area is, or some kind of location. Waiting to hear back again.

"This.. Check with the Grasslands office in Greeley about the fires."

Google them, and give them a call. Don't email, my experience is they are extremely slow in responding. Very nice, but very slow.

Public Land, pick up a map of the grasslands. It's a checkerboard of private/public up there with no way of knowing what's what by just looking. Don't think just because it isn't fenced means anything. Get a map at Gander/Sportsmans...

HAHAHA I made a comment to my friend asking location, so he sent me GPS coordinates.

I forgot to mention, if you have any interest in hunting coyotes, do some research and see if you can spotlight them in Pawnee. I don't know if that's legal or not. We hunted them in the day and found nothing but when we camped it sounded like hundreds were howling in the night. I'm serious, they were all around us in the middle of the night but damn if we could find anything moving in the daylight.

Awesome, GPS works great.

Also, I am not looking for a "popular" camping area, I want something that is off the beaten path.

Thanks

If you get a chance, I'd like to hear about your trip afterwards. I'm thinking of going up in the middle of June and maybe again in July. I don't mind the drive, but it would be nice to maximize the shooting time by camping the first night.

As long as one could shoot at night no spotlighting needed. [Coffee]http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/jerrymrc/toys/canning120Medium.jpg

It's something that I've considered as well. I think it would be pretty easy to find public land that is wayyyyy off the beaten path to shoot/camp on.

That used to be the BCGC. 45 acres in the middle of the Pike nat Forrest. $75 per year for your own private campground. Damn I miss that place.

192,000 acres in the Pawnee. There is tons of land that nobody goes to. Everyone hits the stuff closest to Hwy 14. But, you need a map.

Any recommendations since you are out there?

Unfortunately, I dont have any good idea. I have my 80 acres, so we camp here. But, I cant really shoot here. 80 acres isnt that big. We shoot shotgun, .22, etc. But, nothing else. I wish my place was big enough to host everyone for camping and shooting.

The problem with being so close to hwy 14, is that the trucks go by all night long. It doesn't bother me, but maybe some people want to feel like their away from it all. Can you camp at the Buttes?

Let's do it. I'd have already done it this year, but now I work Sat and Sun. There might be oil rigs up there soon though. I don't know how loud they'll be.
