Hey all,

I've been calling around all morning, trying to get my hands on some Solo 1000 powder - supposedly wonderful for my iDPA 147 gr 9mm loads.

Haven't found any yet. I've called Sportsman's Warehouse, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, Dad's, and Reloader's Corner, to no avail. Has anyone else seen it locally?

I'm looking for a small quantity at first, to see if I like it, before I throw down on an 8 pounder.

Thanks!

What kind of bullet are you loading and what gun and I can tell you if it's worth the search.

147 gr Berry's RN and/or the 147 gr Montana Golds. Looking to shoot out of my Glock 34, a lil bit above 125 pf.

I actually think I read some of your posts at Brian Enos's forums.

Solo or Titegroup will be fine.

Yep, I have a lot of older posts about Solo 1000, especially in 9mm and with lead or moly coated bullets on BE. With lead and moly, Solo 1000 is the way to go. With the MGs, it will work, but Titegroup is going to be easier, just as accurate if not more so, and simply faster to reload with. WST is a good alternative with the lead bullets. It's mild on the smoke production, meters well in comparison to the Solo 1000, and is usually easier to find.

Solo 1000 is probably the closest I've found to a perfect powder with lead and moly bullets, but it has it's problems like they all do. It's a bitch to get the metering set in the powder throw. You have to take the extra time to get the meter to throw exactly where you want it to, and then monitor it regularly as the amount of powder in the thrower gets less. The less powder on to, the less it gets pushed into the measuring device.

Solo 1000 can vary from lot to lot and some of the more recent lots have less kick per grain than the older ones. So, you have to test your lot changes really close.

I am not a fan of Solo 1000 with bullets lighter than 147 gr. It gets really close to the pressure ceiling with the lighter bullets. WST is the better powder with these.

I have lots of data and experience in this area. Feel free to ask questions. I've been shooting moly coated lead for years now, and use Solo 1000 with them exclusively. I will be the first to tell you that TG is the way to go with jacketed bullets though. I've loaded the MG 147s with 3.4-3.5gr of TG at 1.125-1.130 OAL regularly. The load routinely makes 130 pf. Going lighter than 130 pf can be a problem with steel and getting any gun to run consistently.

Oh ya, I buy my Solo 1000 on line from powder valley or similar places, and I usually buy it 3-4 eight lb jugs at a time. If Green Mountain doesn't have it, I doubt you are going to find a pound around here to pick up to test. I can always pour off a pound for you to play with if you want.

Just thought I'd get back and update the thread - Green Mountain does, indeed, have Solo1000.

I'll be trying it out soon - TG, Universal, and Autocomp all smoke like nuts with the Moly coated Precision Bullets I bought. I think I'll order in a bunch of $70/k Black Bullets next and try the Solo.

Yep, like a coal train. Solo, WST, and N320 in that order for the top three powder that work withou excessive smoke, light recoil, make pf without running the edge and accurate enough for the shooting sports. WST is hella temp sensitive and N320 is expensive.
