Many copiers now are also printers- it allows them to scan & store an image for later retrieval by the evil... er, um... that is to say for multiple copies... it can scan in a whole set of pages once, then print multiple copies in various collated formats.

The machine that says they delete the files is still suspect, as you can 'undelete' files, as long as they haven't been written over.

Scrubbing old hard drives requires money to pay someone. It is simpler to donate the equipment to someone who says they will do it then sell the equipment whole or part it out for whoever is buying.

Unless you scrub the drive yourself, you can't know it has been done despite the assurances of others. This type of cyber salvaging has been going on for quite a while now and it has hit Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and people like us.

Be careful where you put your documents. They just may wind up someplace you never thought about.

All of my old electronics are recycled and reused, in the form of being Ka-Bar'd to a tree and used as a target (making sure the hard drives, if the device has one, are thoroughly destroyed)... gotta keep it green right?

The electronics I do use that can store any info are encrypted to above DoD standards, all my passwords are different and the important ones are random sets of letters/numbers, etc.

Nothing better to use perfectly good firearms on than old electronics. Always fun to pull 'em apart and see what exactly the bullet does.

Wow, that is scary! I doubt most businesses realize there is a hard drive in their copier and don't think about it when getting rid of old equipment. In my business we don't let hard drives out the door, we wipe them and then drill each drive before it goes to the recyclers.
