My dad who introduced me to firearms passed away. When he gave me his service revolver in 1970 and told me his only story about his service in WW2, he never talked about it except for this one story.
When he went to sign up after the war began he was told he could only be a cook. dad being as sharp as ever told them "I don't want to feed the enemy, I want to kill them".
Unfortunately back during that time certain americans were relegated to certain inferior positions, as if their patriotism was a question.
Dad got in and ended up a member of the 761st Tank Battalion. You war history buffs should know the name, if you don't do a GOOGLE search
Dads only regret was that after the war that nazis could come to this country and buy a house in a neighborhood where he could not buy or that nazi could come to this country and send his kids to schools we could not attend.
Dad kept his .45 side arm ,which he passed on to me with its original holster, which I prize as my most important material possession and every time I take it out to clean, I remember the sacrifices he and that part of the GREATEST GENERATION made without so much as a whimper.

sorry for you,
they truly were better than our up and comings, i hope to have passed some of my family's patriotism and courage on to my kids.
I will say though your father must have lived a long a happy life, my grandfather was in WWII and he passed 18 years ago at 87 years old.
My grandfather was a Medic on naval ship in WWII, he did not have a side arm to pass down. I have a note pad that he kept while he was in, personal thoughts, like a journal, mostly about my grandmother, they were married 56 years, in the back he kept a log of his pay days and how much he would be able to send home to help my grandmother pay the family bills,
He was one that volunteered the day after pearl harbor, a new wife a new baby on the way, and he still knew he had to help, his medical training made him invaluable to the effort.
$6-8 dollars a week was all they were paying to keep this country and other safe and ensure our freedoms. these men put there lives on the line for their families and honor, and security and 8 bucks a week.
I wish we had more men like these in this country today. i wish we had leaders that had their mindset. I wish we had a new generation coming up that had their courage.

Sorry to hear you lost your Dad. You memories of his stories and thoughts serve him proudly. He would be honored by your post.
Sorry for your loss. It takes a great man to serve a country that looked down on him the way it did back then. Sounds like your dad was a part of or witnessed many great things in his life- from serving in WWII, to raising a family, to seeing our country evolve to a point where all men are looked at as equals. Another poster requested a picture of your dad's 1911.... well I would rather see you post a picture of your dad.
Sorry to hear about your loss. My prayers for you and your family.

My sincere condolences.
I lost my dad 5 years ago this month. Still hurts.
I'd love to see his .45 if you're willing to share a pic...
I never say I'm sorry for a death as there is really no reason to be. You don't celebrate the death, you celebrate the life they came to have.
It sounds like your dad meant a lot to you.
The hardships he faced, I can only imagine.
Looks like he did ok despite the adversity.
One of the things about this country I still wish I could erase.

You have our sincere sympathy for the loss of your Dad. That generation truly believed that a simple hand shake or a persons word was much more binding than some paper contract. Prayers sent for your support.
I am sorry for your loss. your dad is a true hero and I thank him for all he has done

I too am very sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like your dad was an amazing guy and I'm sure you'll always be proud of him. I appreciate his service.
I know that one day I too will be writing such a post. My dad was a violent disciplinarian and I was afraid of him and avoided him like the plague when I was young. Because of this I didn't really have a releationship with him until I became an adult and he mellowed out a LOT. Now I call him every few weeks and we talk for an hour or more. While I know I've learned a lot from him through the years I regret the many things I could have learned from him if we'd only had a relationship when I was younger.
Father's are very special and the memories you have of your father will always be with you; hold onto them and cherish them. It sounds like he was of the generation that still lived by and taught values, morals and ethics as well as the many other skills you need every day of your life. These will always be a a part of who you are so, in a way, your father will always be there with you.
It seems you have someone important to remember today, Memorial Day.

I am sorry for your loss. Prayers to you and your Family.
Keep your memories close and write them down so you can pass those memories onto your kids etc.
Writing down on paper can also help you get through this difficult time.
Your Father sounds like a true American Hero.
RIP
The more the greatest generation dwindles, the more we have to resolve to pick up the slack.
This country was founded as a place for men to be free, but for a very long time it really wasn't. In some ways it still isn't.
There is no one color of skin that has the market cornered on laziness, ignorance, greed and hate. From guys that fly the confederate flag and make up excuses to cover what it meant, to others that wear their pants too low and think the world owes them something.
If a thousand of them could be traded to get your father back, it would be one hell of a bargain.
sorry for your loss.
my grandfather served in Africa with the Signal Corps. never had any stories to tell other than arriving in Italy to see Vesuvius erupt.

Sorry for your loss. But it sounds like you had a father that was proud of his country despite how it may have treated him. It takes a great man to do that.
