I am going to replace (then sell) my Elcan C79 3.4x28 optic with one that will allow me to use either the optics or the BUIS (Back Up Iron Sights) without removing the optic.

My AR carbine has flip up front & rear BUIS (YHM front & GG&G rear).

I'm researching the different optics and am considering an Eotech, possibly a 512 or an Aimpoint M4.

What are your preferences / experiences / recommendations?

Thanks

I have an Eotech and like it a lot. The window is big enough to readily use the irons with it powered off. I'd like it more with a 3X magnifier, but I don't think it will fit with the buis.

Eotech 512 is a good choice JMHO [Beer]

I have a couple Aimpoints with Troy BUIS's and both are 1/3rd Co-witnessed. So far I haven't had any negative issues with this setup. Never tried an Eotech so this is JMO.

I bought an Eotech 512 and the flip up front & rear sights (YHM & GG&G) co-witness great.

I have an EOTech 552 with Magpul Flipup rear sight & standard post front. It is a true cowitness setup, and I like it. WB

Lower 3rd with a flip up rear is where it's at IMO, plenty clearance with a fixed fsp, and provides an adequate sight pic when the rear site's up.

Have to agree with the lower third co-witness. I have a eotech 517 and the old 511. If you go with the 512, you will need a riser to get the sites in the lower part of the site. A larue mount is the way to go. There model ecos-c will raise the eotech up and has a small rail to mount a magnifier. Just remember some eotechs have the riser built in and you don't need an extra mount.

For a while I was thinking that I wanted to have a lower 1/3 co-witness. After much contemplation, I decided to go absolute co-witness and bought an XPS2-0. IMHO, I have more of a sight picture while using the irons with an absolute co-witness. Lower 1/3 just seems too low in the lens and blocks a lot of my view beyond the rifle.

I've used a C-More red dot system with built in rear BUIS on my M4. I've always liked the fact it was one piece that takes up the whole flat top. Very solid! Doesn't get moved when banged a little.

I decided to try out the absolute co-witness since I can flip down my irons.

This is the CompM4s using the LaRue LT659-NV mount on a SCAR 16s w/ factory irons. I haven't yet been to the range to zero the aimpoint, these pics show the general idea.

Aimpoint, never had a problem on my personal or military issued rifle with aimpoint optics. I've shot quite a few Eotechs and they are nice, not my style, I like the aim point offerings more.

I've got two EoTechs mounted on two of my AR's: one 522 and one 512. If you are after a sight that will co-witness with your irons, look no further. I've never had a problem with either optic and would buy either one again. Each one perfectly co-witnesses with my irons on each rifle.
