America's Best Burger Cities

By Katrina Brown Hunt

Sometimes, only a burger will do.

When traveling overseas and feeling under the weather or homesick, New Yorker Jeff Ward often craves a burger. "I start wanting comfort food—something American," says the managing partner of African Safari Consultants. And yet? "They're always terrible," he says. "There's no better place for a burger than the U.S.A."

Which American city does burgers best? That inspires a lot of debate—but now Travel +Leisure readers have picked a winner. In our annual America's Favorite Cities survey, readers weighed in on the best features of 35 cities. While some categories had obvious contenders (like Chicago for pizza or Seattle (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502031-seattle_vacations-i) for coffee), the race for the best burger seemed wide open.

There's even debate over where the hamburger originated—perhaps at a lunch counter in Athens, TX (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-479489-athens_vacations-i), in the 1880s, or at the famed Louis' Lunch in New Haven, CT (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501901-new_haven_vacations-i). While only major cities were in the running—sorry, New Haven—the Top 10 showed a certain small-town flair in its distinctive burger styles.

No. 1 Houston (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502016-houston_vacations-i)
It turns out that bigger does mean better for voters, and this oil town takes the prize for putting a Texas-size spin on the American classic. Double-patty, half-pound burgers are the norm here, topped with shredded lettuce and mustard more often than mayo. Some local favorites—such as Lankford Grocery (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-18987682R) and the Hubcap Grill (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-45803017R)—also offer triple-patty versions, with upwards of a full pound of beef.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/saltlake.jpg

Salt Lake City

No. 2 Salt Lake City (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502021-salt_lake_city_vacations-i)

Locals have lined up in droves ever since the streamlined burgers of In-N-Out have come to town, but otherwise the area's burger personality is quite a bit more decadent—as in, pastrami burgers. To try a quarter-pound patty piled high with more beef, check out Crown Burger (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-19903104R), where they also add Thousand Island dressing, lettuce, onions, and cheese.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/providence.jpg

Providence

No. 3 Providence (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502001-providence_vacations-i)

The Rhode Island capital is a crowd-pleaser for food lovers: it ranks No. 3 in the AFC survey for overall dining, as well as No. 3 for pizza, ethnic food, and mom-and-pop cafés. Locals even claim the diner was invented here. For a classic burger, go to Stanley's (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-43547510R), which has been serving Stanley burgers since 1932, topped with just grilled onions and pickles.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/denver.jpg

Denver

No. 4 Denver (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501897-denver_vacations-i)

Denver won top honors for its active locals and came in at No. 2 for its great outdoor spaces. That fresh mountain air works up an appetite. So where to go for your burger fix? Locals love the H Burger (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-64853578R), in lower downtown Denver, with fresh-ground Angus, Hatch chile pepper, and red pepper-tomato jam. Purists, meanwhile, rave about Bud's Bar (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-19598206R) in Sedalia (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-474745-sedalia_co_vacations-i), outside the city. Talk about basic: you get just patty, cheese, and bun—as well as a lot of flak if you ask for fries, which have never been on the menu.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/austin.jpg

Austin

No. 5 Austin (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502013-austin_vacations-i)

The Texas capital landed in the top five for both barbecue and burgers. For an old-school favorite, go to Hut's Hamburgers (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-19402205R), which started as a drive-in in 1939 and offers grass-fed longhorn as well as buffalo burgers. Or, to experience the No. 2 town for live music by way of a burger, go to Ranch 616 (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-19376154R), where there's weekly live country music, and the beloved Framed Burger is stuffed with something different daily—such as cremini mushrooms or jalapeños.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/chicago.jpg

Chicago

No. 6 Chicago (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501928-chicago_vacations-i)

The eight-ounce burger at Duchamp (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-17444137R) includes ground chuck as well as rich trimmings from the local meatpacker, piled on a homemade cottage-cheese-and-dill roll. Then there's Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-17371835R), which inspired the classic John Belushi skit on Saturday Night Live ("Chee-burger, chee-burger, Pepsi, Pepsi! Cheep! Cheep!"). You can get a chee-burger there today for just $2.85.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/nashville.jpg

Nashville

No. 7 Nashville (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191502011-nashville_vacations-i)

Nashville may be most famous for its live music scene, but the city takes pride in all kinds of homegrown products. The gourmet newcomer Burger-Up (http://travel.yahoo.com/64328295) uses ingredients sourced from 10 Tennessee farms. Its burgers are accompanied by beef toppings-including Tennessee-made Jack Daniels ketchup.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/msp.jpg

Minneapolis/St. Paul

No. 8 Minneapolis/St. Paul (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-477062-st_paul_vacations-i)

The Twin Cities' contribution to burger culture is the Juicy (or "Jucy") Lucy—a burger with cheese melted inside the patty. To truly form an opinion, you'll have to visit the two places that battle over the claim of the original: Matt's Bar (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-24305693R) and 5-8 (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-24308131R). Happily, this is about as rough as things get in Minnesota, according to AFC voters, who lauded the area for its safety and cleanliness.

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/tr/burgercities/savannah.jpg

Savannah

No. 10 Savannah (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501915-savannah_vacations-i)

Savannah put its stamp on the survey for local specialties, with pizza, barbecue, and farmers' markets also ranking in the Top 10. Hometown favorite B&D Burger (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-13852132R) uses fresh Angus and its own home-baked buns for its menu of 33 different burgers. Try the Tattnall—with cheddar, pineapple, teriyaki sauce, and onion rings piled on top.

What's the deal with Bud's Bar not serving fries? Are they commies? [Twist]

Makes sense, the burgers around here are all pretty damned good.

Which is good, because most of the other food sucks.

Ummm, Bud's Bar is in Sedalia, not Denver. [Dunno]

I'm sure there are better places in Denver. Hell, Mountain Sun, in Boulder, is closer. Tom's, on East Colfax, isn't bad.

Best ever was Rod's Herd Burger in Wilmington, OH.

There's a really good burger place/bar on Colfax, I think something like Capitol Bar and Grill. I really like it and not bad priced.

Cherry Cricket, also a bar and will card you after a certain time (if you are thinking of bringing family), is also really good. A little more expensive. That is in Cherry Creek, across from the mall.

I'm really surprised Cherry Cricket wasn't mentioned.

City Grill's burger on Colfax is also very good.

15th and Platte just north of the big REI store in Denver is a place called "My Brothers Bar".
Awesome burgers (bisonburgers too) in a cool old building that has a checkered past, supposedly it was a bordello at the turn of the century.

Best burger I ever had? Hard Rock Cafe on Cozumel, Mexico. Towards the end of our vacation we went on a tour of Cozumel and had an hour to kill before we caught the ferry back to Playa Del Carmen.
Hot, sunburned and tired we decided to stop in the HRC for a beer and AC. We decided to have a burger too and after a week of resort buffet food the simple pleasure of a bacon cheeseburger and a Budweiser was hands down the best burger I had ever had.
Good times!

Jeezuz Guy, the worst burger joint around and you even get the name wrong, its Jims Burger Haven!

What are we gonna do with you?[LOL]

But the Cruise nights at Jims are noteworthy.

Exactly! 72nd and Sheridan or thereabouts, I think. Have to disagree, BPT...I love their burgers...ummm...and the o'rings. But it's been years since I've been there.

For a drive through burger you can't beat Freddy's Burgers! Wow, just had one this weekend and it's one of the best patties around IMHO.

Ugggg- they gutbomb me. The one on Sheridan is better than the one at 88th and Pearl though.

My first job, when I was 14, was working in a Whataburger in Houston. I really love their burgers. Wish there was one here.

You seriously went to Mexico for a burger Bert? That's like goin' to Memphis for Thai food. BTW I'm with you on Jim's. I can't even figure out how the Billy goat tavern was mentioned, Kuma's corner had burgers that blew them the f%#& away.

No, we went Mexico for the honeymoon we never had (15 years late!)
The awesome burger was just a bonus!

Not gonna mention the pier at the resort in the moonlight!!!!!!!!!

Old School burgers are awesome- although not really sure they fit into the scheme of things on this list since they're kinda franchise or whatever. But awesome burgers and they refuse to freeze or microwave anything.

Salt in Boulder (off Pearl St) has a great burger on their menu. In fact, all of their food is amazing. But that burger really left an impression.

Smashburger is also good but pretty pricey.

15th and Platte just north of the big REI store in Denver is a place called "My Brothers Bar".

This man knows his burgers! Go to "My Brothers Bar" and order the "Johnny Burger" Best in town in my opinion and they server food till around 1am even on Sundays! PS: Its only been there 100 years and has the second oldest liquor license in Denver.

Also if you are in Englewood at lunch time try Steak House 10 they have a pretty awesome burger for under $10 (with/frys or stuff) They have good steak for dinner but can be pricey.

I haven't had a hamburger in years since I don't eat beef, but I remember loving Thunderbird in Boulder when I was in college. Dunno if they are still around though.

As much as I hate to say I like a chain place too, Red Robin for being a chain has decent burgers.

So, I guess ya don't have to go to Sedalia for a good Denver burger.

Thanks for the list of places to eat. [Dinner]
