El Paso county class requirements for military

I've read conflicting things--I'm unsure if the disparity is due to changes in recent years, or differences in whatever clerk is looking thriugh the paperwork or answering your questions.

If you are military, do your active duty orders and id suffice for the class requirement? I have heard it does from someone who applied many many years ago. The way everything is worded it is unclear if mil only needs pistol qualifications with a dd214 or if its needed for both veterans (w dd214) AND current active duty. I understand something may be needed to show training for the vet. But do I need to scrounge up pistol qual scoresheets too if Im on current active duty? thanks. I would appreciate first hand experience, rather than "I heard..." but in any case, thanks.

If you want to be sure call the sheriff and ask. I live in Teller county and all I did was bring in my ERB. But that was after I called and asked them what they will except.

I was on reserve status when I got mine in May 07. I took them my ID card and a copy of my range card from my last qualification with the M9, and they accepted that without a problem. I would call them and confirm, but if you have a valid ID card and assignment orders, you should be golden. I do recommend that you take a defensive handgun or concealed carry course though, unless you've already had such training. Definitely read up on Colorado law regarding use of force as well. And keep in mind of course that a CCW is not valid on post, that could be an issue for you, especially if you live on post. But yeah, you should be good with your ID card and your PCS orders to Carson. Basically, all they really want is proof that you've been taught how to handle a gun. Hope this helps.

I took my ID, 522 (wpns qual card) and PCS orders and got my permit a few weeks later.

As dtotheatothevtothee says, all I needed when I was active duty was my training report, PCS orders and ID card. I understand retired military can get by with the DD-214 in place of PCS orders, not sure if they need to retain a copy of their training report. The training report and verification of current or past military status legally satisfies the class requirement.

I would encourage you to take classes or join IPSC anyway because military training isn't exactly analogous to what you need to know in a civil situation -- laws and safety rules are very different. ROEs are different in a war zone with respect to target identification, type of ammo you can use, when to use, etc.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must demonstrate competence with a handgun by submitting the following:
1.
Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions or current military service.
2.
Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor.
3.
Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces within the three years preceding submittal of the application.
4.
Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application.
5.
A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado Law Enforcement Agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application.
6.
A training certificate from a “handgun training class” (see definitions) obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application. The applicant shall submit the original training certificate or a photocopy thereof that includes the original signature of the class instructor. In obtaining a training certificate from a handgun training class, the applicant shall have discretion in selecting which handgun training class to complete.
The applicant must submit with the application an accurate photocopy of the certificate, affidavit, or other document from the instructor, school, club, business, organization, or group that conducted or taught the course or class attesting to the successful completion of the training by the applicant. To fulfill your training requirement you may call the Colorado Division of Wildlife Regional Offices in Colorado Springs at 227-5200 for a list of approved Hunter’s Safety Courses or you can contact the National Rifle Association at (703) 267-1430 or 1-800-672-3888 for a list of certified instructors.

I forgot to update this.

El Paso co Sheriffs Office only requires your active duty orders if you are currently on active duty. I have a Colorado DL, I am unsure if there's a difference if one has an out of state license. I would assume such a person would have to show orders placing hmself on a local post ( i.e. PCS order to Ft Carson) and mil ID, like a local gun transfer. But I havent a clue if this person would need additional training documentation (i.e. pistol qual card).

From my personal experience, active duty orders suffice with colorado DL if you're active duty. Nothing else required for training. No proof of pistol qual req. This info is accurate as of July 2011.
