What an evening.

Where I live I back up to a huge farm field that the farmer just cut his alphalpha crop to dry and then bail. Well, the stupid kids two houses down had been playing with fireworks since I got home (neighbors said it started early this morning). These were pretty loud ones. It scared my little daughter and she wanted to see what was making all the noise. So we were looking out our back upstairs window, and the kids were trying to throw the fireworks up as high as they could and over the fence.

All of a sudden I saw some smoke. Thought it could be a smoke bomb. Then flames started shooting up from the field. I sprung into action and ran to get the fire extinguisher. In the meantime, my wife called 911 cause she had little confidence in my fire fighting ability. I sprinted down the behind the fences and was getting the fire with my little extinguisher. 10 minutes later the FD pulled up. I had the fire out.

Well, to make a long story short, the kids were each charged with arson since they had illegal fireworks (m80s , etc) and there were multiple burnt spots. The cop told their parents they were lucky that the fire was contained quickly or they would have been taken to the county juevenile detention facility and charged on the county level. They were just charged on the municiple level.

Had the wind picked 5 minute earlier or another 15-20 seconds had I been later, we would have been on the news. I thought the flames were about 2 feet high when I was out there. The nieghbor told told me the flames were taller than me and over the fence. Scary part is this would have been a wild fire that butted up to a housing developement and the field would have destroyed the farmers livelyhood.

I guess the firebans (and fireowkrs bans) are in effect for a reason.

Yea, but some people still just don't get it.

Good Job on the Fire, Dana.

Dana, proactive vigilance like yours will help keep us from having another 2003 fire season.

I have several large industrial type fire extinguishers that are expired but nothing else is wrong with them. If any of you guys need any extras let me know and I will bring them to the next shoot.

What the worst thing is:

My wife made me buy fire extinguishers for the house. Now I havegooten the "I told you so" stuff all night.

The parents were tryingto get the police to let the kids off without a summons. The cop told them they were lucky they weren't going to county jail for the night. My real question is, where did the kids get the fireworks? These were the "good kind". They didn't just walk down to the store and buy these. An adult had to buy them somewhere. Stupid adults gave stupid kids dangerous items.

We did a couple of, ahem, "out of state" fireworks, but not many and nothing stupid, and we did them in a large parking lot. Most of my entertainment on Independence Day came from dry ice bombs anyway - no fire hazard.

Those kids should've gone to jail for what they did. Good job on the quickness to help, Dana.
