View Full Version : wow, tried some new .38 spec. ammo (pics)
honestly i bought these for the sole reason that i thought they looked cool. i tried some out and wow, the diameter is equal to a quarter after.
eldorado starfire 38 spec +p 125gr

I bought a couple of boxes on clearance from Longs a while back for my 10mm. I guess I might need to try them out. Years ago they did get a good review as personal defense ammo.
What medium were you shooting into?
I also see that you have an expanded bullet and one that didn't expand. That doesn't appeal to me.
Did you weigh the expanded bullet to see how much mass it lost on expansion? Retained weight is extremely important for adequate penetration. If a bullet expands to the size of a quarter, but will stop at 2" of penetration, is it really impressive?
Have you tried the 135gr +P Gold Dots?

not the most realistic medium..... bunched up towel then a phone book.
the second round was just a winchester FMJ, not one of these, you can see no hollow point on it.
since it was going into a phonebook i would have seen fragments that broke off, i didnt, so i assume that it retained nearly 100%
it made it through 10 or so layers of thick towel and then maybe 3/4 way through a 2 1/2 - 3" phone book.
nope havent tried em yet. i will i want to do some type of comparision now, this is interesting. of course i will have to find a better test material.

I had to copy the posted picture and zoom in to tell that the dark area on the nose is actually a meplat and not a cavity.
